Co-Creating  Caregiver Success

Lori La Bey talks with Mary Farquhar who has named herself the CEO of her husband Roger’s care since October 2018. She is a member of Lori La Bey’s Caregiver Connect Support group, where she openly shares critical insights and resources with our members. In addition, Paula Forte also joins us. She is a Registered Nurse with over 45 years of experience in nursing. With bedside experience ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics, her clinical practice has included primary care, acute care, long-term care, and tertiary care settings.  Her roles have spanned hospital administration, staff education and leadership development. She has a BSN & MSN in Nursing and a PhD in Adult Education & Organizational Development. Her training as a Health & Wellness Coach was done at the University of Minnesota and she is nationally certified with the credentials, NBC-HWC.

People living with dementia are targets of social media abuse in nursing homes 

Lori La Bey talks with Eilon Caspi a Gerontologist and dementia behavior specialist. He has worked in the aging field for 30 years starting as a nurse aide in a nursing home where his grandfather lived. Since then, he worked as a social worker, educator, consultant, author, applied researcher, and care advocate in long-term care homes. Over the past 18 years, he has led several studies to improve understanding and the prevention of various forms of elder mistreatment in nursing homes and assisted living residences. 

Learn:

1. Define social media Abuse
2. Examples of social media abuse
3. Preventative techniques to avoid social media abuse from occurring
   1. Zero tolerance
   2. Consequences for those engaging in social media abuse
   3. Raise awareness of social media abuse to all staff, families, volunteers, residents…
   4. Implement sensitivity training on this topic
   5. Develop a code of conduct
   6. Awareness of consequences for the perpetrators and victims
   7. Policies regarding smartphones and other types of camera equipment
   8. Policy on when a picture or video can be taken of a resident, along with where it can go… file, family, marketing materials
   9. Immediately and thoroughly conduct an investigation into any situation brought to the community's attention and ensure that their reporting process is known and followed by staff.
   10. All investigations are to be reported.
