Lori La Bey talks with LindaThompson, founder of Theo's Flowers, who grew up on the North Shore of Massachusetts, one of five siblings, in a family where caring for one another was simply a way of life. That early foundation of service would go on to shape both her career and her calling.

For nearly 40 years, she worked as a Human Resources leader in the healthcare field, dedicating her professional life to supporting people, organizations, and communities. Throughout those decades, her passion for helping others only deepened.

Theo's Flowers was born out of a deeply personal experience: watching both of her parents live with Alzheimer's disease. That journey gave her a firsthand understanding of the isolation and loss of connection that so often accompanies dementia and memory disorders — and also revealed how something as simple as a flower and a visit could bring a moment of joy, calm, or recognition to someone who needed it.

Determined to turn that experience into something meaningful, she founded Theo's Flowers as a way to repurpose beautiful floral arrangements and hand-deliver them to elders living with memory disorders, along with something equally important — the gift of a visit.

True to the spirit that inspired it, Theo's Flowers remains entirely volunteer-run and is powered by family: the founder's three sisters ( Nancy, Tracey, and Kristen), her two adult daughters, and Nancy's adult daughter all work side by side to keep the mission blooming. Together, they've built an organization rooted in kindness, environmental responsibility, and a shared belief that every person deserves to feel seen, valued, and remembered.

Theo's Flowers solves two problems at once — floral waste from weddings and events, and the isolation so many elders with dementia experience. About 90% of the flowers used are rescued rather than purchased, sourced from 50+ weddings and events.

The visit matters as much as the flowers

The bouquet is really a vehicle for something bigger — a hand-delivered visit. For someone with memory loss, a caring visit paired with something calming and beautiful can spark connection when words might not.

Explosive, volunteer-powered growth

Launched in September 2021 and entirely volunteer-run, Theo's Flowers has grown in under five years to a team of more than 50 volunteers who've hand-delivered over 700 bouquets — a compelling started-small, look-how-far-it's-come arc.

Generations in Bloom — the intergenerational piece

Separate from the core volunteer program, student volunteers have delivered 500+ additional bouquets — a natural spot to talk about bridging young people and elders, and inspiring listeners to get students or schools involved.

How the community can get involved

Florists, event planners, families, and care communities all play a role in the flower-rescue pipeline — a strong closing point that invites listeners to donate flowers, volunteer, refer a family member, or partner as a care community.

Lori La Bey talks with a panel of experts today about improving care for those living with dementia when in the hospital.

Teepa Snow, MS, OTR/L, FAOTA, is an Occupational Therapist with over forty-five years of clinical and academic experience. Her organizations, Positive Approach to Care® (PAC) and the Snow Approach Foundation, provide online and in-person education and products to support those living with brain change.

Polly Logan, DDS, was employed as a general dentist for several years before being inspired to join Teepa and the Positive Approach to Care® team. She currently serves as the Chief Communication Officer for Positive Approach to Care®.

P.K. Beville, Dr. P.K. Beville is a world-renowned expert in dementia care and is the founder of the non-profit Second Wind Dreams.  She is the author and creator of the Virtual Dementia Tour, currently in 28 countries and 14 languages.

Michael Ellenbogen was diagnosed with Young-Onset Alzheimer's Disease at the age of 49. As a world-renowned International Dementia Advocate & Connector, he has been featured in nationally syndicated TV, radio, and other media outlets. He has written for blogs, newspapers, journals, and websites and shared his personal perspective as a guest speaker.

Michael served on the PA Alzheimer's Disease Planning Committee and other advisory councils. He testified before the government and has three letters published in the U.S. Congressional Record. He was a regular speaker at NAPA and was featured in the ADI’s 2012 World Alzheimer's Report. He represented the U.S./World for people living with dementia at the World Health Organization in Geneva.

He is interested in motivating those with Alzheimer’s to raise their voices and reduce the stigma surrounding the disease. Michael wrote about his journey with the disease in his book entitled “From the Corner Office to Alzheimer's.”

Phil continues to serve children and families through a new role as Children’s Pastor at First Baptist Church in West Plains, MO. Phil has been serving as a children’s pastor for 7 years.

Book Summary

Big-rig truck driver John Kosareff began misplacing his keys in 1997. He soon graduated to making dangerous turns with the family car into oncoming traffic and getting lost in a mental fog, driving miles from home. Before long, he no longer recognized Susan, the wife he loved for fifty years, who was abruptly woken one morning by John choking her. Despite the threat to her life, Susan continued to care for John at their home. She also refused to acknowledge her husband’s Alzheimer’s and failed to address her own well-being. Instead, twelve years after John’s disease began and due to the stress of being her husband’s caregiver, Susan’s life came to an abrupt end when she suffered a massive heart attack. The responsibility of taking care of John, Susan’s death and funeral, and all the attendant financial affairs that followed would now be up to their children. Were they up to the challenge?

Author Steve Kosareff (Satin Pumps: The Moonlit Murder That Mesmerized The Nation) recalls the tragic, and even at times, humorous, story of his father’s twenty years with the rare long-term disease as he navigates the Alzheimer’s care maze. Kosareff moves back and forth in time over six decades as his family lived in their home, as he revisits the chain of events his father’s Alzheimer’s set in motion and how he and his sisters responded.

Something Like That is both a cautionary tale from an Alzheimer’s caregiver and a personal account of the emotional, financial, and physical toll the disease took on the author’s family.
