October 19 AJSM October 2026 Podcast: Minimum 5-Year Follow-up After Arthroscopic Latarjet: Outcomes and Complications
The Latarjet procedure is widely used for recurrent anterior shoulder instability with glenoid bone loss. Arthroscopic techniques are increasing; however, there is limited evidence for mid- to long-term outcomes. In conclusion, at a minimum 5-year follow-up, the arthroscopic Latarjet procedure resulted in significant improvement in WOSI score, low rates of recurrent dislocation, and high patient satisfaction. The WOSI score remained stable over 1 to 5 years. HRQoL, assessed using the EQ-5D-5L index, was comparable to age- and sex-matched general population norms at 5 years, supporting a satisfactory long-term impact on HRQoL. Sex-based disparities in the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk may be partly explained by cyclic variations in sex hormones that drive systemic shifts in tissue osmoregulation. Ultrashort echo time (UTE) T2* magnetic resonance imaging provides a noninvasive, quantitative means of evaluating the water content and collagen orientation in tissue. In conclusion, Eumenorrheic female participants exhibited significant preovulatory to postovulatory changes in ACL T2* metrics, while anovulatory controls demonstrated no significant changes over time. These findings suggest that ACL T2* metrics are sensitive to cyclic fluctuations in female sex hormones across the menstrual cycle. Click here to read the article.

Long-term studies are emerging reporting encouraging outcomes after matrix-induced autologous chondrocyte implantation (MACI). While MACI has historically been undertaken via open arthrotomy, arthroscopic techniques have been reported. However, longer term clinical outcomes and/or graft survivorship after arthroscopically performed MACI are yet to be reported. In conclusion, MACI performed via an arthroscopic approach provided sound clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and graft survivorship at a mean 13.6 years after surgery. While coronal malalignment influences outcomes after medial meniscus posterior root tear (MMPRT) repair, alignment parameters such as the hip-knee-ankle angle (HKAA) may not fully capture the biomechanical setting of the medial compartment. The joint line convergence angle (JLCA) reflects the intra-articular environment but has not been well studied as a prognostic factor after MMPRT repair. In conclusion, the preoperative JLCA was an independent predictor of clinical outcomes after isolated MMPRT repair. Incorporation of the JLCA into a preoperative assessment may improve patient counseling and risk stratification and help identify patients who could benefit from adjunctive strategies aimed at optimizing the medial compartment's biomechanical environment.
