Our story today begins with President Joe Biden’s remarks at the 2021 Virtual Munich Security Conference. Here is where President Biden laid out the security issues and concerns of the United States and the world. On February 19th, after the G7 meeting, President Joe Biden was the first to speak at this meeting and he spoke much on the future of the United States. He talked about how “America is back.” This is his distinct policy of international relations, very different from his predecessor President Donald Trump. So what does “America is back mean”? Well, it is the reverse of policies from the previous Trump administration, meaning that the United States will reclaim its leadership role in world affairs, shaping its once universally recognized leadership.

What does this mean for the United States' future foreign policies? How does the United States, under Joe Biden, see the state of the world and our allies?

Our story today begins with President Joe Biden’s first call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Typically Israel, as one of our closest allies, receives a call right after the inauguration, however, it took President Biden up until last Wednesday, February 17th, four weeks later. Nonetheless, this talk means a lot for both leaders. For President Biden, it means how will the United States move forward with its relationship with Israel and the situation in the Middle East. For Prime Minister Netanyahu it means preparing a strong campaign ahead of the March 23rd election. But, by the end of the day, they spoke and what they spoke about was regarding national security concerns and the balance of our relationship

President Joe Biden is ending the United States’ support for Saudi Arabia in the Yemen civil war. Yemen has been in a civil war since 2014, it is a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Earlier this month, President Biden called off U.S. support for the war, and instead focused on ending the war.

The United Nations describes Yemen as the world’s biggest humanitarian crisis, with 80% of its people in need and millions on the verge of a large-scale famine. According to UNICEF, with the pandemic spreading, Yemen is facing an “emergency within an emergency.”

On February 3rd, 2021 President Joe Biden extended the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Vladamir Putin. This treaty is better known as New START, and it is one of the few treaties left that deals with the arms reduction of nuclear weapons between the United States and the Russian Federation. It was first put into effect in 2011 and now is extended until February 2026. This, for now, gives both the United States and Russia more time to stabilize nuclear tensions and shift focus elsewhere in international relations and other regions where nuclear stability is at risk.

President Joe Biden comes through with one of his bigger campaigns promises to have the United States rejoin the WHO. By executive order, Biden reverses his predecessor’s action of withdrawal from the WHO. Joe Biden believes that rejoining the organization is the best move for the country, despite the controversies brought up by President Trump last year.

Biden’s recommitment to the WHO is a step further for his plans of reestablishing American global leadership, the belief that we must lead the world because it best suits our interests and the international community’s interests.

On January 12th, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the United States will take action to counter Iranian support for al-Qaeda. Pompeo said, “Today, I revealed new information about how the Islamic Republic of Iran has given a new operational headquarters to al-Qa’ida, the terrorist network with more American blood on its hands than any other. For al-Qa’ida, Iran is the new home base. Tehran gives sanctuary to the terror group’s senior leaders as they plan attacks against America and our allies."
