On Sunday, November 22, 2020, the United States withdrew from the Open Skies Treaty after accusations of violations by the Russian Federation. Signed in 1992, "the treaty, which entered into force in 2002, allows its 34 members to conduct short-notice, unarmed observation and surveillance flights over one another’s territories, to collect data on military forces and activities.”

Our story today begins with another U.S. arms sale, this time in the Middle East.  The U.S. military's Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) officially announced that the U.S. State Department had approved a potential sale on Nov. 9, 2020. On Tuesday, November 10th, the Trump administration told Congress that it had approved the U.S. sale of more than $23 billion in advanced weapons systems, including F-35 fighter jets and armed drones, to the United Arab Emirates.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement announcing the approval, “this is in recognition of our deepening relationship and the UAE’s need for advanced defense capabilities to deter and defend itself against heightened threats from Iran."

Welcome to the Moderate Voice of America. My name is Derek Gutierrez.  Our story today begins with transparency in American democracy. 

On Saturday, November 7th, after four days of waiting, America now has its President-elect. Or at least, we think we have a president-elect. Joe Biden was declared victorious after winning Pennsylvania, a state worth 20 electoral votes. It was a state that President Trump won back in 2016 with 48.18% of the popular vote and by 44,000 voter margin. On the contrary, he lost this year after claiming 49.1% of the popular vote but losing by 34,000 according to the Associated Press. However, the election is not over yet. 

President Trump has filed lawsuits against five states, claiming there was vote fraud, as well as illegally counting mail-in-ballots arriving after the election.

Foreign election interference is dangerous, it is a threat to our republic, to our democratic institutions, and our American values. We need an Intelligence community strong enough, knowledgeable enough, prepared enough to combat foreign state actors. We have Russia, Iran, China, and possibly other countries who want to cause a regime change, in order that the next President is in line with their national interests. It is a threat to our foreign policy, a threat to our leadership in the international community.

The American 2020 election cannot be undermined as it was back in 2016.

We have state actors with stakes, hoping to affect change in America's next president in order to achieve their national interests.
