In this episode, Dr. Jim Siegler interviews Dr. Marc Simard on the management of patients with large hemispheric strokes and cerebral edema. This is a particularly devastating condition: the mortality rate is as high as 50-80 percent at 1 year with medical management alone. Decompressive craniectomy can improve survival for some patients, but most survivors are left with major disability. To date, not a single intervention has been shown to improve functional outcomes for these patients. The search for such a treatment is ongoing -- and that's the topic of our conversation today.
