  • Strange Days (1995)
The line between horror film and thriller is something that comes up a lot in film nerd circles. Is Silence of the Lambs a horror film or a thriller? Does a film have to include a big, scary guy with a knife chasing a naked woman through the woods to be considered Horror? Who’s to say? But one thing is certain, there is nothing as horrifying as Tom Sizemore’s wig in Kathryn Bigelow’s Strange Days.

I’m your host, Dave, and joining me as we put on our squid’s and start reliving weekend roller skating trips are fellow ghouls and VIP’s at The Retinal Fetish, Mike, Jackie, and Ryan.

Topics of discussion in this episode include the most unsettling VR experience you could ever have; we brainstorm other scenarios for Squid clips, which include mundane paperwork and boring relationship moments; and finally, we break down why the movie failed at the box office and why it may be the fault of everyone’s favorite cyber smuggler, Johnny Mnemonic.

The Apocalypse Video Shocktober Spooktacular will conclude with the 1975 sci-fi horror classic, The Stepford Wives. So pack your bags and join us in the quaint little town of Stepford where the tuna casseroles are delicious and the tennis courts are nonexistent.

  • Friday the 13th: Part VIII - Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)
This year’s Shocktober may focus on cyber horror, but nothing - not even Jobe “Lawnmower Man” himself - can stop a hockey masked slasher on his favorite day!

I’m your host, Dave, and joining me as we snort some top dollar toot are fellow horror fans and people who never learned to swim, despite being thrown into the deep end of Crystal Lake, Mike and Jackie.

Topics of discussion in this episode include the slowest boat trip from New Jersey to New York ever; we add some New York flavor to a film that is woefully lacking in Big Apple imagery; and finally, we break down the film’s true villain, Charles McCulloch, and his disturbing power over his students, including sexy biology shenanigans.

  • Lily C.A.T. (1987)
With Jobe busy back on Earth making sure everyone’s phone is ringing, the Apocalypse Video Shocktober Spooktacular: Cyber Edition blasts off to space with the 1987 anime Lily C.A.T., a film that asks, what if Alien and The Thing were combined into one movie? And, the more important question, could it be done without Ridley Scott and John Carpenter sicking their lawyers?

I’m your host, Dave, and joining me as we try to find the line between homage and rip off are fellow cinephiles and Time Escapees, Ryan and Nick (aka: Immortan Hoof).

Topics of discussion in this episode include the joy of sticking it to your enemies via a forty year space mission; Detective Dick Berry does anything to catch his man; and finally, we try to answer which came first, the Lily cat or the Lily C.A.T.?

  • The Lawnmower Man (1992)
Prepare yourselves, kiddies. The spooooky season has officially returned. And this time…we’re going digital. All month long Apocalypse Video celebrates the scariest pixelated horrors that the cyber realm has to offer - everything from Lawnmower men to vengeful cyber cats.

I’m your host, Dave, and joining me as we follow the white rabbit into cyber hell are fellow cinephiles and former America Online members Mike, Cody, and Immortan Hoof (aka: Nick).

Topics of discussion in this episode include the epic struggle of Stephen King to remove his name from The Lawnmower Man; we try to understand exactly what dialect Dean Norris was trying to achieve with whatever the hell he is doing in the movie; and finally, Mike and I go head to head in a debate for the ages as we pit Cyber Christ (aka: The Lawnmower Man) against Cyber Jesus (aka: RoboCop).

  • Alucarda (1977)
With Shocktober mere days away, we decided what better way to get ready for the spooooky season than by watching the 1977 nunsploitation film Alucarda, a movie filled with fire, crazy goth girls, and demon orgies officiated by a guy in a giant goat mask.

I’m your host, Dave, and joining me as we walk the dark path are fellow cinephiles and card carrying members of the Beelzebub Club, Mike and Immortan Hoof (aka: Nick).

Topics of discussion in this episode include the many differences between the original uncut version of Alucarda and whatever neutered version YouTube has; we wonder why more people aren’t joining the church when it has daily whippings and gay shaming; and finally, we question who was in charge of the foley effects as we hear a familiar salty snack bag in the film’s end credits.

  • Knightriders (1981)
Behold! His excellence, Immortan Hoof, has graced our pitiful video store with his presence. And he comes bearing gifts; specifically, George A. Romero’s criminally underseen 1981 motorcycle jousting film, Knightriders.

I am your humble video store manager, Dave, and joining me as we embark on a journey through anachronistic Ren-Faires and crazed motorcycle gangs are my fellow knights Ryan, Cody, and special guest: His Excellency, Immortan Hoof (aka: Nick).

Topics of discussion in ye episode include the Mad Max level stunt work on display; we all bask in the awesomeness that is Tom Savini’s chiseled abs; and finally, we all pick which member of King William’s merry band of knights we would want to be (Spoiler: We all want to be Tuck).

  • The Core (2003)
This is David Snider, Mission Log:

With our extensive four hour training course complete we are now ready to set sail into the unknown. It’s as if we’re diving…through the memories of the planet. But we are about to pass from memory…into madness. A madness caused by our insatiable need for 33% Grade-A Beef, aka: Taco Bell.

Joined by my stalwart companions and movie buffs, Ryan, Mike, and explosives expert, Cody, our mission is to fix the problem at the core of our store’s septic tank and bring an end to the crisis that we ourselves caused. To do this, we have scoured our shelves for any films dealing with drilling to previously unthought of depths - and believe me when I tell you, we’ve found the perfect one.

Topics of discussion in this episode include the shockingly bad Playstation 1 style visual effects of The Core; we dissect the Shuttle Landing scene that would be ripped off by George Lucas and Bryan Singer a mere two and three years later; and finally, we try to understand why the director of this film tried everything in his power to make it less entertaining by depriving us of dinosaurs and mole men.

    5. Star Trek: First Contact
      Captain’s Log: Stardate 50893.5

The Apocalypse Video Trek Cast is now nearing the end of this leg of its journey into the Final Frontier and what better way to close this loop than by watching the 1996 box office hit First Contact, a film which perfectly captured the poise and restraint of Capt. Jean Luc Picar—whoa, is that a borg?! Die you cyborg son of a bitch! Aggggrrhhhh!

Ahem. Excuse me. As I was saying, Star Trek First Contact perfectly captures the elegance and diplomatic spirit of Jean Luc Picard. I anticipate no issues on this assignment and am confident that the screenwriters will continue the adventures of the Enterprise in the same diplomatic spirit of the show–wwwwhhhhaaa! The Borg are back! Quick, grab a tommy gun and follow me!! We dine in hell tonight! Arrrgghhhhhh!!!!

I’m your Host and Captain, Dave, and joining me again are fellow Trekkies Mike and Jackie.

Topics of discussion in this assignment include the death of level headed, reasonable Picard and the birth of Action Picard; Data gets it on with a horny Borg Queen; and finally, Star Trek: First Contact answers the question of what The Next Generation was missing all along: Captain Picard shooting a Borg with a tommy gun - Rambo-style.

    6. Super Mario Bros. (1993)
In a world where you constantly hear “we made it for the fans”, one film dared to buck the trend…

I’m your host, Dave, and joining me as I descend into a mad, macabre world of overgrown fungus and bizarre sexual undertones are fellow cinephiles and drug hallucinations Mike, Ryan, and Nick (aka Immortan Hoof).

Listen as we discuss the film that brought Mario and Luigi to the big screen (for better or worse); we debate whether it’s pronounced Mar-io or Mah-rio; and finally, we break down the origin of this weird movie and how it forced Nintendo to avoid the world of cinema for decades to come.
