  • Make Your Day Work for You

Ready to stop being a slave to your day? Let's reframe everything you know about time whether it's working or playing and start leveraging the way our brains and bodies work to get more from our daily 24. Click here to deep dive into more with my Thrive class at a special price

    1. Make time for what matters instead of excuses. Question everything about how you spend your day and root out activities that are habits not purpose.
  • Once you know what really needs to be done, see if you can delegate all or part of a task to someone else. This gives them the benefit of experience while you get the benefit of fresh perspective with fewer hours of your own time spent.
  • Take time to recharge and replenish. Make it your mantra to do less better.
  • Our subconscious mind has a gatekeeper that only lets in the sensory inputs we have prioritized. Give that gatekeeper some new instructions to find insight and inspiration quicker.
  • Get out of survival mode by reducing stress. The stress response turns off the very brain functions you need to have a high performance day.

  • Stand in Your Sovereignty

Sovereignty- that state of complete ownership of ourselves and our natural right to integrity is becoming an elusive phenomenon. This episode explores how to let go of people pleasing and feel comfortable with disagreement.

    1. Recognize when someone you are dealing with is a bad actor.  Look for attempts to use grains of truth to sow self doubt, or making you wrong if you don't agree with them
  • Take the time for introspection. Act in truth and integrity and you can always feel comfortable standing by your decisions.
  • Jesus never extended an olive branch to the Pharisees.  You can't placate abusive people because their actions are about them not about you.  Recognize the hypocrisy in their actions for what it is.
  • Disengage from situations that would compromise your sovereignty. By engaging- even to defend yourself- you add energy that fuels the abuse.
  • Seek the counsel of others.  The best way to dispel dark behavior is to shine light on it. When you check in with others, you get reassurance that you are not the problem and feel more empowered to walk away.

    1. Approach your career like a design problem.  Where are the pain points? What innovation can you bring to meet your goals within the present constraints?
  • Getting ahead in your career is about having greater and greater influence.  With influence comes impact.
  • Recognize what is holding you back are your own beliefs about what's possible- otherwise you would have done it already. • Competition holds you in limitation, look for ways to stay on your unique path instead
  • Failure is learning. When you go big, you get wiser with every attempt.
  • Making money isn't selling out. It's being recognized and rewarded for bringing value. Money expands your influence and lets you help other make a difference.
  • Validation is doing something to please others in the hopes of getting ahead. Throw out the checklists and focus on heart led work and evolving to accomplish your mission. The recognition you get from that will equal impact not an "atta boy."

  • Managing Client Expectations

Shifting priorities, but not deadlines, pressure to provide more service for less fee. We've all been there trying to win work and maintain client relationships. But at what cost?

    1. Don't get caught up in a race to the bottom on fees. Understand that there is a buyer for every market- some want cheap sunglasses while others want high quality designer items. Position yourself for the market you want to be and you will find a client match.
  • Understand the dynamic relationship between time, cost and work. Work with your client on strategies to prioritize one and understand how it impacts the others
  • Give your clients more of a behind the scenes glimpse into your process so they don't just see the polished items in meetings.  This helps them appreciate the complexity of issues that must be considered and expertise involved in asking the right questions and knowing how to evaluate the data.
  • We make ideas come to life.  Build in time for a client to see an idea play out and perhaps discover that it isn't in fact the right move. Build the deign process as a journey of discovery and structure your fees and schedule accordingly.
  • If you are feeling stressed out and overwhelmed, you need my new book Time Builder.  I wrote it just for busy, ambitious people like us who know they were put here to make a difference but have been caught up in the busyness for too long. • Mythbusting: Egos and Sellouts

There is a lot of posturing in creative professions. We've learned to disdain what we consider to be the ego and the sellout- but what if we're getting it all wrong?

    1. Far from being the big voice, the ego is actually what traps us in people pleasing, chasing career milestones and endlessly seeking validation. How can you detach from this and become more attuned to your mission than in meeting expectations?
  • You have one job- to live your mission of building a better world by using your unique gifts and talents. Focus on that- no matter what.
  • Impostor syndrome is actually your ego trying to keep you safe by playing small. Move past that by embracing what you do know. Even if you can teach one thing to one person, you are succeeding.
  • Integrity is not about making a stand for your issues.  It's about bringing wholeness to a situation. That means factoring in other points of view to have a more complete picture.
  • You can't bring integrity is you don't have integrity. Maintain positive energy and focus on the mission be making sure your own physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs are met, you feel grounded and have clarity.
  • If you are feeling stressed out and overwhelmed, you need my new book Time Builder.  I wrote it just for busy, ambitious people like us who know they were put here to make a difference but have been caught up in the busyness for too long. • Building for a Better World: Interview with Blaine Brownell

In my interview with Blaine Brownell, we discuss the role of materiality in sustainability, well being, equity and planetary health.

    1. Cultivate relationships with people who can mentor you- then act on their advice to create your own opportunities. Think about what you create as a "demo album" and put it out there to be discovered.
  • Do the work you are passionate about and it will lead you to discovering what you are meant to contribute.
  • Sharing your interests creates a reciprocal relationship. You learn from those you teach.
  • World changing design is vitally responsible. It combines boldness and the willingness to take safe risks with sustainable innovation. Put together diverse teams and allow those who will use your work to inform it.
  • Pick and issue and go deep to see if you an move the needle beyond what a system or checklist might require.
  • It's not enough to only consider sustainability at a small scale. Think about how you project can be viewed within large scale assessments to maintain overall impact to one planet.
  • Be willing to do research not just for the issues of your project, but to solve some of the wicked problems.

  • Space Shamanism: Using Salutogenesis in Your Work

I am a space shaman- you can be too (maybe you already are). In this Episode, I discuss the healing power of design and why we all need to offer more wellness resources to the users of our buildings.

In today's pandemic-ridden world, stress levels are higher than ever. How can we offer restorative environments:

    1. Be committed to learning about salutogenic measures we can take and how stress affects people. Take the opportunity to talk about it when ever you can, even if your delivery sn't perfect, you are advancing this important cause.
  • Think of yourself as a shaman, diagnosing the needs of users and offering spatial elements as medicine. Whether it's enhanced sense of coherence, the safety of prospect and refuge, the resonance of biophilia, the empowerment of self efficacy or the restoration of the relaxation response.
  • Pick a current project and think about how you could introduce three salutogenic elements into it today to help people move towards wellness. These can be small moves, everything counts.
  • If you are feeling stressed out and overwhelmed, you need my new book Time Builder.  I wrote it just for busy, ambitious people like us who know they were put here to make a difference but have been caught up in the busyness for too long. • The Health Safety and Welfare of Experience

We all know we have a duty to protect the public's health safety and welfare in our work. But let's take it beyond codes and look at the ethics behind HSW through the lens of user experience.

There are no current code requirements that consider user experience. However, the more we learn, the more it becomes imperative that we design buildings that empower people to be their best selves.

    1. Always tie project goals and ROI back to experience
  • Do your research to understand specific design strategies that will impact users in a positive way and show the metrics behind your approach
  • Once you do the homework, you've found your truth. Integrate that authenticity with a bigger purpose
  • Share the truth from a place of love with your clients, not from the intellectual high ground or as an activist trying to force beliefs on others.
  • If you are feeling stressed out and overwhelmed, you need my new book Time Builder.  I wrote it just for busy, ambitious people like us who know they were put here to make a difference but have been caught up in the busyness for too long. Good questions!  In this episode I answer questions from our audience on time management. We cover:

  • Grounding techniques to tame the chaos and help you be more creative
  • The importance of gratitude for finding ways to advance your career goals even when everything seems hopeless
  • How to communicate and enforce your boundaries.

  • Shine Your Light

Ever felt simultaneously like you were too much AND not enough?

Believe it or not, it's less about what other people are saying or doing and more about the story you drag around with you everywhere. In this episode, we crack that open so you can unapologetically be the you you were always meant to be.

    1. Learn why authenticity is one of the most important ways to connect with others, and why saying no is part of being authentic
  • Understand that the guilt or shame you have at saying no or being too good is coming from an internal space.
  • How others perceive you is based on how you perceive yourself- start seeing the positive and reacting accordingly and watch others mirror you.
  • If you are feeling stressed out and overwhelmed, you need my new book Time Builder.  I wrote it just for busy, ambitious people like us who know they were put here to make a difference but have been caught up in the busyness for too long.
