Around The 412

Smitty and Tyler discuss the crazy week that was for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Mitch Keller broke the franchise record for most strikeouts in a season by a right-handed pitcher and the team overcame the largest deficit in franchise history. After trailing 9-0 to the Cincinnati Reds, the team stormed back to win 13-12. Jared Triolo has become a more intriguing piece of the puzzle as he's shown the ability to hit for some power and the versatility to move around the diamond, seeing reps at first base. Could this make him part of the team's plans moving forward?

Smitty and Tyler are back to discuss Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan saying that Kris Letang AND Erik Karlsson will both be part of the team's top power play unit. In the absence of Jake Guentzel, this makes sense to start the season. Once he returns though, how will things shake out? Will it be Rickard Rakell to lose his spot on the top unit? One of the defensemen or Guentzel himself? They also touch on what they want to see in the preseason and why it's now or never for Sam Poulin.

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday Night Football by a score of 23-18. While there were still plenty of flaws that reared that head, the Steelers offense led by Matt Canada seemed to take a step forward in this one with Kenny Pickett throwing touchdown passes to Calvin Austin III and Pat Freiermuth. The offensive line continued to disappoint particularly in the run game where Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren couldn't find much room to get going. Patrick Peterson and Levi Wallace intercepted Jimmy Garoppolo three times in this one and TJ Watt added two sacks to his already established franchise record. How are we feeling as Mike Tomlin and his team get ready to head to Houston to take on the Texans looking to get to 3-1?

Smitty and Tyler are back to discuss who they think from the 2023 Pittsburgh Pirates will also be part of the 2024 club. How much turnover will take place? Will David Bednar still be part of the picture? Could one of Jack Suwinski or Conner Joe be on the move?

Tyler and Smitty talk about if Pittsburgh Penguins' goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic's job as the backup goaltender should be in sharpie or if Magnus Helberg can push him for that spot. They then predict how they think the roster will shake out for Opening Night.

Smitty and Tyler discuss the way the Pittsburgh Pirates are wrapping up their 2023 season and where the team could finish in terms of their win total at this point. Is 75 wins a successful season at this stage in the rebuild? They also discuss the team's decision to shut down Oneil Cruz for the remainder of the season. After partially tearing his Achilles, should Andrew McCutchen be part of the team's plans in 2024?

Smitty and Tyler are back to discuss the Pittsburgh Penguins adding Colin White to the club via a professional try out and his prospects of actually making the team. The front office added former San Jose Sharks GM Doug Wilson to the front office in an advisory role. They then give their picks for who will surprise people in both a good and bad way for the 2023-24 version of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Smitty and Tyler discuss the Pittsburgh Steelers disastrous start to the season losing their opener to the San Francisco 49ers. Kenny Pickett was the worst player on the field, but Mike Tomlin has hope that his quarterback will turn it around due to his work ethic. Not only did they lose the game. They also lost multiple key pieces in wide receiver Diontae Johnson and defensive tackle Cam Heyward for multiple weeks due to injuries. How will the team account for these? Will Keannu Benton and Calvin Austin iii step up? Can the team get back on track vs the Cleveland Browns on Monday Night Football? Let us know!
