Around The 412

Smitty and Tyler are back for another Pittsburgh Pirates based show! It's been a minute, we know, but we felt inspired. The Arizona Diamondbacks clinched a spot in the World Series after knocking off the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLCS. A team that won just 84 regular season games will now play for the game's top prize. How far off are the Pirates, really then? Can they accomplish what we are witnessing the Diamondbacks do in real time with a $60 million payroll? What kind of contributions from Oneil Cruz, Ke'Bryan Hayes, Bryan Reynolds, Endy Rodriguez, Henry Davis, Mitch Keller, etc... would they need to get in order to contend? Let's discuss!

Smitty and Tyler are back to discuss the latest surrounding the Pittsburgh Penguins. The team has dropped 3 consecutive games after starting the season 2-1. The team continues to get nothing from their bottom six forward group, having just one Radim Zohorna goal to show for the entire unit. Even captain Sidney Crosby has not looked like himself as of late. Where does the team go from here? Is this roster still capable of playing the system that head coach Mike Sullivan wants to play or do they need to adapt to their personnel? Let's discuss.

Smitty and Tyler are back to discuss all things Pittsburgh Steelers. Mike Tomlin was able to lead his team to victory over Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday at SoFi Stadium. Kenny Pickett and the offense once again came alive in the 4th quarter to give the team just enough for victory. The return of Diontae Johnson to form a duo with George Pickens was a welcomed addition. Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren were able to find their groove as the game went on running behind Dan Moore Jr., Isaac Seumalo, Mason Cole, James Daniels and Chuks Okorafor. On the defensive side of things, TJ Watt once again made a game-changing play, this time intercepting Matthew Stafford to flip the game. Minkah Fitzpatrick did his job keeping Cooper Kupp and check and Joey Porter Jr. took yet another step towards being CB1 for the team. Let's talk about all of it!

Smitty and Tyler are back to discuss the week that was for the Pittsburgh Penguins. After an opening night loss to the Chicago Blackhawks, the Pens bounced back winning both games of the back-to-back against the Washington Capitals and Calgary Flames. Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel have all gotten out to fast starts in terms of production, but how about newcomer Reilly Smith? The way he has slotted in with Geno on that second line has been awesome to watch. Chemistry is something that takes time to build, but they appear to have quite a bit already. While the team continues to get nothing from their bottom 6, they also haven't gotten any goals from their defensemen through 3 games. Speaking of defensemen, has the addition of Erik Karlsson put an emphasis on defending in his own end for Kris Letang? Let's talk about ALL OF this!

Tyler and Smitty are back to discuss all things Pittsburgh Steelers. Coming out of the bye, how can the team make internal improvements to their roster after a week of self scouting. With Dan Moore Jr. set to return from injury, is it possible he takes his starting spot back over from Broderick Jones? How can the team continue to ramp up the usage of Joey Porter Jr. and Keeanu Benton? What types of challenges do the Los Angeles Rams present? With Matthew Stafford back and playing good ball and an offense with weapons including Cooper Kupp, Puka Nacua and Tutu Atwell, how will TJ Watt, Alex Highsmith, Minkah Fitzpatrick and company hold up against them? What will Kenny Pickett and the offense do to try to neutralize Aaron Donald. How much will getting Diontae Johnson back help? Let's discuss all of it!

Smitty and Tyler are back to discuss all things Pittsburgh Penguins. Mike Sullivan's team returned to the ice to kick off their 2023-24 campaign on Tuesday evening playing host to rookie Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks. After going up 2-0 on the back of goals from Bryan Rust and Sidney Crosby, the team did what it did several times last season. They blew a lead late and ended up losing in regulation. In what looked like a continuation of the previous season, the main thing that plagued them and prevented them from extending their playoff streak last season, reared it's ugly head again. It's just one game, but the fans don't want to hear that. How did Erik Karlsson look in his team debut? Jake Guentzel wound up missing no time as he was in the opening night lineup following off-season surgery. Where does the team go from here?

Smitty and Tyler are back to discuss all things Pittsburgh Steelers. Mike Tomlin's squad got a much needed win over John Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens thanks to more heroics from TJ Watt and Alex Highsmith and a late touchdown from Kenny Pickett to George Pickens. Joey Porter Jr. came away with a late interception and Miles Killebrew got a game-changing punt block. The Steelers have just found different ways to win each time they match up against Baltimore. What kind of changes could we see during the bye week? Will we see adjustments from Matt Canada or Teryl Austin's units when the team returns to play against the Los Angeles Rams? Will Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren continue to see their same snaps or could they draw more even? Will Joey Porter Jr. and Keeanu Benton continue to see their time increase? Will Broderick Jones hold onto his spot as the team's left tackle when Dan Moore Jr. returns?

Smitty and Tyler go over their biggest surprises both positively and negatively from the Pittsburgh Pirates 2023 season and discuss if their bar was raised, lowered or has stayed the same for 2024 because of that? With the likes of Endy Rodriguez, Henry Davis, Ke'Bryan Hayes, Mitch Keller and Bryan Reynolds being joined by a returning Oneil Cruz, we could be in store for a 2024 that is at the very least much more exciting than the product we've seen lately. Smitty and Tyler discuss the Pittsburgh Steelers loss to the Houston Texans in a 30-6 blowout loss. Pretty much everything went wrong for Mike Tomlin's team at NRG Stadium on Sunday. Kenny Pickett not only played poorly but got hurt taking a sack. Pat Freiermuth, Dan Moore Jr. and DeMarvin Leal also left the game with injuries. From start to finish, Mike Tomlin, Matt Canada and Teryl Austin were just outclassed by DeMeco Ryans, Bobby Slowik and company. CJ Stroud was awesome as he diced up TJ Watt, Alex Highsmith, Minkah Fitzpatrick and company. Tomlin's changes include padded practice on Wednesday along with more playing time for Joey Porter Jr., Keeanu Benton and Desmond King. With John Harbaugh, Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens coming to town on Sunday, where are we with this team? Can they right the ship?
