Around The 412

Smitty and Tyler are back to talk all things Pittsburgh Penguins. The team's inconsistent season continued over the last week with a comeback victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning followed by back-to-back OT/Shootout losses to their cross-state rival Philadelphia Flyers. Tristan Jarry, who has been fantastic in net also potted his first NHL goal and first by a goalie in Pittsburgh Penguins history. He along with their top line of Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel and Bryan Rust have been fantastic. It's really everything and everyone else that hasn't been producing. Evgeni Malkin and Reilly Smith got off to a hot start but have since gone cold. The Powerplay is in the midst of an 0-29 stretch and is directly responsible for watching crucial points slip through their hands. Where do we go from here? Let's discuss!

Smitty and Tyler are back to discuss the latest surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers. Following a disappointing loss to the Arizona Cardinals, how will the Steelers rebound on a short week against the New England Patriots? Kenny Pickett suffered an ankle injury that required surgery and will sideline him for a few weeks, so in comes veteran Mitch Trubisky to try to steady the ship. Will he, Jaylen Warren, Najee Harris, Diontae Johnson, Pat Freiermuth and George Pickens be able to do enough to get a win on Thursday Night? To add injury to insult, Elandon Roberts left Sunday's game with a groin injury, putting his status very much in doubt for Thursday. Having already lost Cole Holcomb and Kwon Alexander, how will the Steelers inside linebacker room shape up? Keeanu Benton continues to impress, has he been their best rookie? Let's discuss all of this and more!

Smitty and Tyler are back to discuss the latest surrounding the Pittsburgh Penguins. Mike Sullivan's team has had a roller coaster start to the 2023-24 season. At 10-10-1, you can't get much more average than what the Penguins have been. The biggest reason they sit in this position? The Powerplay in our opinions. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Erik Karlsson, Jake Guentzel, Bryan Rust...the talent is too good to be 0-20 and near the bottom of the league overall on the man advantage. So what can the team do? Not continue to do the same thing, we know that. Let's discuss this further as well as the play they've gotten in net from Tristan Jarry and Alex Nedeljkovic.

Smitty and Tyler are back to discuss all things Pittsburgh Steelers. In their first game following the firing of Matt Canada, Kenny Pickett and the Steelers offense surpassed 400 yards for the first time since Week 2 of the 2020 season. Najee Harris and Pat Freiermuth led the way for the Steelers' offense, that scored just 16 points despite the large spike in yardage and time of possession. What do we make of the Diontae Johnson incident? Flipping sides, the Steelers defense look to get Minkah Fitzpatrick back against the Arizona Cardinals, but what role with the Steelers give Trenton Thompson to keep him as part of the defense?

Smitty and Tyler are back to discuss the latest surrounding the Pittsburgh Penguins. Mike Sullivan's team has won 4 straight and the key to unlocking the best version of this team appears to be a change in the system they're playing. They've switched up their forechecking approach and that has seemingly propelled them into being a much more sound club that can play to their strengths. Erik Karlsson has really started to come into his own playing alongside Marcus Pettersson. Kris Letang has taken on a more defensive responsibility and Evgeni Malkin has been fantastic alongside Reilly Smith. Tristan Jarry returned after just a one game absence and pitched his 3rd shutout of the season. Is this up and down play just something we need to expect from the goalie? Let's discuss!

Smitty and Tyler are back to discuss the latest surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mike Tomlin's team took care of business against a visiting Green Bay Packers squad on Sunday. Jaylen Warren and Najee Harris led the way for a Steelers rushing attack that had 205 yards. Broderick Jones, Darnell Washington and company were clearing lanes all game. Kenny Pickett and the passing attack still left a lot to be desired, which is the next step in the progression of this offense. On the defensive side of things, the team lost an off-ball linebacker for a second straight week after Kwon Alexander suffered a season-ending Achilles injury. How will Elandon Roberts, Mark Robinson and company make up for that loss? Could Keanu Neal be a factor there when Minkah Fitzpatrick returns to the lineup?

Smitty and Tyler are back to discuss all things Pittsburgh Penguins. The Pens bounced back in a big way, outscoring their opponents 12-2 over the last 2 games. A 10 goal performance vs the San Jose Sharks went a long way in propping up their goal differential. Only 5 players didn't register a point in that contest. Jeff Carter was made a healthy scratch for the first time in his career, as Vinny Hinostraza made his way into the lineup and even netted a goal. That one change seemed to provide a boost for both Noel Accari and Matt Nieto as well. Will this continue? Only time will tell. Rickard Rakell is yet to register a goal this season, but his linemates (Reilly Smith and Evgeni Malkin) continue to look like they've been playing together for a decade. Let's discuss this and their upcoming schedule.

Smitty and Tyler discuss the latest surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mike Tomlin's team took care of business on Thursday Night Football over the visiting Tennessee Titans and Mike Vrabel. Kenny Pickett did what we've grown accustomed to seeing, playing poorly for the majority of the game, only to come up big when it mattered by engineering a game-winning touchdown drive, ending with Diontae Johnson scoring for the first time since 2021. Broderick Jones made his first start at right tackle, replacing Chuks Okorafor (for something he said during the loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars). George Pickens has 3 receptions for 21 yards over the last two weeks, how can Matt Canada and company get him more involved on the stat sheet? The defense stepped up big down the stretch with Kwon Alexander and Joey Porter Jr. seeing a lot of DeAndre Hopkins. Can they carry over this success against the Green Bay Packers even after losing Cole Holcomb for the season? Let's discuss!

Smitty and Tyler discuss the latest surrounding the Pittsburgh Penguins. The sudden and tragic loss of Adam Johnson rocked the entire hockey and sports world last week and the guys spend some time talking about that situation and the changes the game could make due to it. Their underlying numbers suggest the Penguins shouldn't be as bad as they've been this season, which to outsiders may suggest there is hope the team can turn it around. It's become hard not to be pessimistic about this team's ability to win hockey games though, given how we've seen things play out over the last couple of seasons. Tristan Jarry has struggled to regain his form and Rickard Rakell is yet to score a goal this season. How can this team make up for that? Let's talk about it!

Smitty and Tyler are back to discuss all things Pittsburgh Steelers. They discuss the team's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Kenny Pickett left the game with a rib injury, but even prior to being replaced by Mitch Trubisky, he looked like he had taken 3 steps back after seemingly taking a step forward in the week prior. He couldn't get on the same page as Diontae Johnson and George Pickens. The offensive line wasn't creating anything for Najee Harris and Jaylen Speaking of, could this lead to a change with Broderick Jones replacing Dan Moore Jr.? Minkah Fitzpatrick also left the game and will miss time with a hamstring injury. How will the team do their best to replace him? Joey Porter Jr. made his first start and held his own. With Mike Vrabel leading the Tennessee Titans into town with Derrick Henry, DeAndre Hopkins and rookie QB Will Levis, will Mike Tomlin have his team ready to bounce back in primetime?
