Summary:
In this final episode, we want to suggest veterans lessen the burden for their loved ones who will make arrangements after their death, by considering some advance planning. Matthew Marini, Advance Funeral Planning Director for Dignity Memorial, informs us of some of the benefits that may be available -- as well as the key document to show eligibility, the DD-214.
Episode Notes:
Veterans are usually reluctant to discuss their experiences in military service, especially combat related. Many have avoided interaction with government organizations, like the Veterans Administration, due to mistrust. So, it is incredibly difficult for many families to engage their veteran in discussion about funeral arrangements and knowing which choices to make can be overwhelming. Military funeral? Where to be buried? And if you don't have some up front tips, you may lose out on some reimbursement or assistance from the government. We strongly urge you to talk to your veteran and, if they do not want to discuss arrangements with you, at the very least, obtain a copy of their DD-214 and protect it so it is available for you later. The DD-214 is proof of service and is the key to obtaining veterans benefits after a death.
Food for Thought: Even if you or the veteran feel a military themed memorial service is too much, or the Presidential Certificate that can be requested is unnecessary, please consider children and grandchildren. This will remain in their memories as a special moment and a letter signed by the President can be passed on for generations as a legacy - something to be proud of.

Summary:
"Daily," is the response to our question, "How often do you think of them?" We are, of course, referring to the countless men and women who served in our military and never returned home. Memorial Day isn't just a long weekend, picnics and parades. For our veterans it is an official reminder of their comrades killed while serving, or those who returned but succumbed later to an injury or illness acquired while serving. Today we hear from three veterans the impact survivor's guilt has and has had on them personally.
Episode Notes:
Mike Herzog, Steve McAlpin and Genero Prieto each respond to our questions. Listen between the words, close your eyes and feel the emotions. They may have left military service, but the evidence of their service remains as they each continue to volunteer and advocate for their brothers and sisters.

Summary
Do you dream of your loved one in your grief? Are you troubled by those dreams, or do they comfort you? Join us today as Dr. Joshua Black, Ph. D., describes his own investigation of bereavement dreams. There is very little academic research on this topic, so we are certain you will find this discussion enlightening.
Episode Notes:
Dr. Joshua Black is a grief researcher, speaker, author, consultant, online course instructor, and host of the Grief Dreams Podcast. He has focused all of his MA and PhD research (in psychology) on investigating dreams in bereavement (also known as grief dreams) and continuing bonds from many types of loss (including prenatal loss and pet loss). Most of his academic research and publications have specifically been on dreams of the deceased. Dr. Black is considered one of the world’s leading academic experts in grief dreams. Due to the lack of academic research in this field, Dr. Black has focused his efforts on raising awareness on grief dreams through doing talks, interviews, and developing an online Grief Dreams course. Additionally, he developed a grief dreams website (www.griefdreams.ca) and runs several social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Clubhouse @griefdreams).
