On the full moon in October, the monks complete their annual 3-months Rains Retreat with the 'Pavāraṇā Ceremony':
They invite constructive criticism from each other regarding anything heard, seen or suspected that one may have done or said against the rules of discipline ('Vinaya') laid down by the Buddha.
It is difficult to see one's own weak points, because delusion tends to hide our own shortcomings from ourselves. Therefore, external input can be extremely helpful for improving oneself.
Naturally, it will only really work if the person providing the feedback is
Knowledgeable
Speaking out of kindness or compassion
And if the person receiving it is amiable to instruction.
If that's the case, we can all grow by mutual admonition as a support for our spiritual development.
