  • SVS Women’s Section with Dr. Duncan and Dr. Shaw

Soni and Wen discuss the new SVS Women's Section with the steering committee co-chairs, Drs. Audra Duncan and Palma Shaw.

In 2021, the society of vascular surgery approved a new membership section for women in vascular surgery. The SVS Women’s Section serves as a centralized home for women in vascular surgery to discuss gender-based issues, support each other in practice, academic research, and leadership roles, and engage the participation of women in the SVS. The section had its inaugural events at VAM 2022 in Boston with fantastic feedback.

Dr. Audra Duncan and Dr. Palma Shaw are co-chairs of the SVS Women’s Section steering committee. Dr. Duncan is a professor of surgery and chair of the division of vascular surgery at Western University in London, Ontario. Dr. Shaw is a professor of surgery and program director of the vascular fellowship at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY.

You will get an insider’s look at how the Women’s section was created, what inspired its creation, what kind of activities and support it provides, and lastly, how you can be involved.  For more information, please visit the SVS Women’s Section website below:

  • SVS HITC Series - New Technologies in Vascular Surgery

REGISTER HERE for the NEXT webinar Hacking the EMR: Making the EMR work for you, at 6 PM CT on September 7, 2022.   This webinar is a collaboration between the Society for Vascular Surgery Community Practice Section, Health Information Technology Committee, and the Wellness Committee.

Today, we are republishing the HITC Webinar from May 4, 2022, on New Technologies in Vascular Surgery.  New technologies designed to improve surgical techniques are rapidly emerging in the vascular specialty. These technologies include Blue Dop, which assists in determining limb preservation; Voythos, an EMR assistant;  FORS technology, which provides real-time 3D visualization of the full shape of devices inside the body without the need for fluoroscopy; and Cydar AI, which advances surgical visualization and decision-making to build a future where all surgery works exactly as planned.

Click here for the full webinar video.

    Faculty:

    • Blue Dop - Patrick Kelly, MD, Vascular Surgeon at Sanford Health
    • Voythos - Sophia Khan-Makoid, MD, CEO and Founder of Voythos
    • Fiber Optic RealShape (FORS) Technology - Andre Schanzer, MD, Professor and Chief of Vascular Surgery at the University of Massachusetts
    • Cydar AI - Murray Shames, MD, Professor and Chief of Vascular Surgery at the University of South Florida

    Moderators:

    • Judith C. Lin, MD, MBA; Chair, HIT Committee; Professor and Chief of Vascular Surgery, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine

  • R&R Spotlight: Dr. Keith Jones

As part of the Race & Representation (R&R) Series, we are doing spotlights on vascular trainees and faculty that identify as racial/ethnic minorities underrepresented in medicine (URiM), who have been historically excluded from the field. We hope to amplify these voices as examples of the unique challenges faced by URiMs within vascular surgery and as a source of inspiration and mentorship.

In this episode, Imani talks with Dr. Keith Jones and discusses his experiences transitioning from an academic practice to running and building his private practice and his experiences within both practice environments. He discusses how he manages to deal with racism in and out of the hospital and his hopes for how medicine will change moving forward.

Dr. Keith Jones currently works in private practice in Sacramento, CA.

  • VOS: MASH - Part 1

Vascular Origin Stories is a podcast series that explores the fun and engaging stories that shaped vascular surgery.

Today’s episode will be the first part of a multi-episode series exploring how the young battalion surgeons serving in MASH units in the Korean war pioneered wartime vascular repair. This episode introduces the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH), as well as some of the real-life stories from the surgeons unknowingly changing the field of medicine, which inspired the hit movie and TV series M*A*S*H.  We’ll look at what caused arterial repair to be removed from the army surgical handbook after WWI and how changing medical education helped create the environment for ingenuity in the MASH units. In part 2, we’ll explore in detail the individual stories of adversity, courage, and perseverance that led to the re-introduction of arterial repair in the military.
