Matt Andersen is a soul powerhouse whose folk-pop ballads focus on the trials of humanity through an experiential lens. He’s an open, empathetic man who nonetheless observes the difficulties people have connecting and remaining in harmony. His backing band, the Bona Fide, provides an array of roots instrumentation from trombone to banjo all in an effort to fill out Andersen’s massive careening hollers and thick, chewy vocalizations. Here in the studio, the band manifests itself as a simple rock quartet; using the streamlined set-up they produce straight-forward, heroic tunes that invite you to sway and sing along.

Over It., Weiss is considered one of the frontrunners for the emo revival movement of the 2010’s, though his style and influences dip into punk, hardcore, folk and airy indie rock.

Gatherers is a dreary hardcore band who pen atmospheric tunes with heart-wrenching lyrical content. Lead vocalist Rich Weinberger sways back and forth like a withered plant at the stage’s front. He delivers harsh, guttural screams through clenched teeth to heighten the emotion of his somber stage presence. The rhythm section conducts the band’s runaway train-like energy; forceful hits and thumping bass grooves add a dense underbelly to the patient, ethereal guitar work.

David Cohn (Serengeti) and Yoni Wolf (of WHY?) first worked together on Serengeti’s album, Family and Friends. In 2014 they again linked up alongside producer Son Lux to form the collaborative hip hop group “Sisyphus.” This year they perform under the moniker “Yoni & Geti”, a duo formed around the concept of stolen love between ex-bandmates. The result is an experimental, lyrical sound that pits Serengeti’s mellow, chewy rap flow against Wolf’s wobbly vocal flourishes over thumping bass and futuristic keyboard lines.

The Dirty Nil are a heavy, spasmodic Rock band. They bring influences of garage, punk and hardcore into their loose, unhinged style. Luke Bentham’s grizzled vocal delivery is backed by ear-shattering guitar noise, concussive drum propulsion and thundering bass lines. Their official bio sums up the band’s ethos with a simple thought, “The Dirty Nil play rock and roll — cause they couldn’t do a damn thing else if they tried.”

Ron Gallo is the former frontman and songwriter of Philly rock band, Toy Soldiers. Gallo’s solo incarnation is Pure Rock n’ Roll with fresh insight on internal development, the terrors and joys of a touring lifestyle, and the backwards approach of the industry as a whole. Gallo’s lyrical dialogue is replete with playful, bitingly cynical humor set to raging guitar licks and ever-chaotic song structures.

Fear of Men are an airy indie rock band who write swelling tunes with super saturated production. Their riveting, experimental style is the perfect compliment to lead singer Jessica Weiss’ ethereal vocal timbre. They employ dark textures and patient, down-tempo grooves to build sonic pressure, relying on post-punk influenced percussion to drive each song to its decisive end.
