Automatic Writing is not a new phenomenon that just sprung up with the "New Age" movement dating back to the 1970's or around that time. It has been around for quite a long time and is arguably one of the foundations of all things paranormal and even religious. Whether you are talking about the Bible or Crowley's channeled writings, automatic writing is the key to accessing this "other" knowledge from a higher source outside of ourselves. It is fascinating to think about the impact these writings have had on human history and us as people - not to mention art and literature. Fernando Pessoa was a Portuguese poet and during my research I came to realize he was a beautiful character in the history of this human animal and he was deep into this practice.
