  • Avenue Red Podcast #196 - Verdant Recordings
Avenue Red regular and all-round top guy Andy Green, perhaps best known under his DJ/label name, Verdant Recordings, is back with his 7th contribution for us. We were surprised to notice that 1,162 days have passed since his previous one however, which was Podcast episode 122 on the eve of New Year’s Eve in 2019.
Here Andy has taken another fresh deep dive into his epic record collection especially for Avenue Red, digging out some old and new deep house & techno cuts that are then impulsively mixed, rubbed and spiced together on his flashy new audiophile rotary mixer. Here we have a prestigious 2-hour trip of astonishing quality and vibrancy, which intelligently pulls together many disparate documents from the deep end.
"Always a pleasure and increasingly a challenge to put together a set for Avenue Red as it esteemed reputation is acknowledged. I recorded this back in the dingier cold nights of January with the intention of serving up something uppish and a measure of joy. And yes, this wasn’t planned out too carefully, just sequencing some tracks as they came to mind. The Vince Watson DNA Resequenced LP and Steve O’Sullivan's collaborations projects are (still) getting my attention here so I had to include those alongside Priori and Eversines who are making amazing music just now.
Enjoy and thanks again to Alec and Avenue Red!" Andy Green, April 2022

  • Avenue Red Podcast #195 - Faestos
Avenue Red listener, obsessive music collector and DJ, the man known as Faestos, has stepped over the line and delivered a special set of musical notes and moody hues for our collective discerning aural considerations. Originating from "Tintin" town, Brussels - capital city of Belgium - Faestos (real name Stephan Hartog) has created an awe-inspiring universe of sound lasting just over 2 hours from big bang to the big crunch. Free your mind, let your imagination float on the waves of this magical soundtrack of deep, dubbed-out techno and ambient sounds. See you later in the foggy haze over on the dancefloor.
"I am glad you opened this gift from me to you! With this mix, I want to take you on a journey through ever-changing environments - from nature to space to urban and back. I mixed a selection of dub techno and deep house tunes which range from deeply meditative and atmospheric to dancefloor-friendly and quite energetic, each representing a different environment. I will leave it up to you to decide which reflects which." Stephan Den Hartog, March 2022

    to me
    Hey Alec,
How are you? Hope you are fine :) Yesterday, I played in a local venue here in Eskişehir, Turkey. I recorded the set. I played for 4 hours and I split it on Ableton into 2 parts (maybe we should re-combine it into one whole?). I decided to publish it because people at the club really liked it. The set contains dub techno, techno, tech house, progressive house from the 2000's and from current time. (You already know my sound :D) It also contains some of my own productions. I hope you'll enjoy it!
    Thanks! https://soundcloud.com/kaanelitok

  • Avenue Red Podcast #194 - Anddie
Avenue Red welcomes another DJ from Bucharest, Romania... enter Anddie (real name Pietrareanu Andrei), a DJ and artist who likes to push the deeper and dubbier shades of house & techno. This 1-hour mix is a dark, groovy selection of dreamy 4/4 gems, mixed sweetly and flowing like treacle.
"The mix is a pure dub techno mix, specially selected for Avenue Red. I chose to release one here because a lot of artists that I appreciate released previously there and because there is some sort of open format which is amazing. From dub to minimal, triphop, deephouse... I think it's a place where you feel nice without the pressure of a format or type of music imposed upon you... it's a place where you can really express yourself." Pietrareanu Andrei, February 2022

  • Avenue Red Podcast #193.2 - Microman
Ahab label owner and artist Microman from Sweden is back for us all to enjoy a third and final feast of his own material here on the Avenue Red Podcast. This is yet another 4+ hours made exclusively of his own production works thrown together in a high-octane, intensive affair, a melting pot of his wild, far-ranging and esoteric sounds. This 3-part compendium has unleashed over 10 hours of music from the man who usually lurks in the shadows and his new music is almost never heard.
The final sub-episode is a beast with 2 heads: first techno and tech house 4/4 slammers; then 2 hours of breakbeats and drum & bass.

  • Avenue Red Podcast #193.1 - Microman
Ahab label owner and artist Microman is back for us all to enjoy a second feast of his own material on the Avenue Red Podcast. Following on from his main episode, we have yet another a live DJ performance entirely composed of his own unreleased material that, combined with the last episode, makes over 6 hours of his wildly innovative and esoteric electronic music. Strictly for the ravers, this one is a maximalist sonic adventure through banging, searingly intense Swedish-style techno and acid. No room for prisoners.
"Tip toeing around the house. The hybrid of tech and acid, together with harmonies in club music and old school. This mix is titled "The Ninth Gate" (a nod to the 1999 Roman Polanski film) and is made mostly from elements I produced in 2016, with 130 BPM club sounds all the way. I had a policy of making one tune a day, keeping it raw with the EQ, mastering and mixing... saving that perfectionism for a later date.
I built a studio in the countryside with four cats and built in the classical Yamaha NS 10 together with big bass element speakers. I used Bitwig Studio after it was released in 2014. It is like a fast car, undoubtedly the king of DAW programs for creating music. This mix is the sum of two years worth of work, planning and execution. It's like when you're a kid and dream of the ultimate way to making music... and then you do it.
In 2003 I got a reference to a thought and a dream, it was like: When you come to the cutting room and they say, "This is good as it is, we don't need to master this, you can release it as it is mixed from the studio!" - Then I got a reference to how long it took to get there, and what I did in-between. Plus, what do I like to listen to when I'm stoned and on something... and then you make it." Mathtiiaas Rosén, January 2022

  • Avenue Red Podcast #193 - Microman
Avenue Red is proud to present a new episode from an old-timer of the 90's Stockholm/Swedish underground music scene, the excellent Ahab label boss and mainstay artist, Mathtiiaas Rosén AKA Microman! Mathtiiaas has blazed a curiously unusual trail since getting his hands on drum machines and synthesisers in his 80's youth, upon which he experimented with intensive programming and mastered his wizard-like machine fuckery to the point of breaking through the Matrix. Weird Science-style happenings, but generating some extraordinary sounds as the end product instead of an A-grade female plaything.
Mathtiiaas worked alone and in studio collaborations under lesser-known names to create several solid mid-90's Swedish releases, also releasing his works on Stockholm-based Loop Records as Aviation Kid, then on its parent label Plumphouse Records where, for the first time, he used the Microman alias (his nickname at school). But after various difficulties and legal wrangling with these labels, in 1997 he forged a new path of his own by setting up the Ahab label as a "toolbox" as he puts it... a place to release musical DJ tools and bridges to perfect his meticulously crafted DJ sets. Broadly in the realms of house, techno and electro, Ahab featured many odd combinations of ideas and hybrid styles aimed at and around the dancefloor.
Here we have a weird, wacky and wonderful almost 3-hour long assault of music entirely composed by Microman himself in recent years. Partly a DJ set and partly a live electronics performance, it starts with a bang and stays fast-paced and exciting for the first two thirds... then it becomes increasingly breakbeat and erratic until you, the listener, are to be swallowed into a kind of sonic abyss. Will you ever come back, or emerge from the other side?
"When playing last time... dropping my Ahab 14 release, this dude came up to me in the shop and asked about the record. He bought 2 out of 250 copies. Only now he will work the release so, that is two years into the future that the record will finally find the floor via that DJ with his records in his set. A DJ's dream is to find a perfect tool. But don't know what it sounds like yet. I never think of making a "Banger". It is always the underdog release that travels far and long that counts for me. That's my school.
I am always about the philosophical aspects in my work and everything is conceptual. Names, sounds, graphics and layout all have a story that goes from a point to meet up with the next release. My Ahab 13 is an art installation, I hand-painted 250 A3 paintings and repacked every record with a hand-stamped A3 painting into every sleeve. All 20 tunes on 5 vinyl are 167 BPM in the breakbeat / jungle / d&b / old school style I grew up with, but it's random eclectic and touches many styles of 1998 and that era. Cut on 45 RPM so you can play and mix with house and techno by putting it on 33 RPM in the bar early in the evening. It's really a toolbox for the retro future like in the TV series Loki, in the parallel world and the other Microman that stayed in the South of London, became a dad and married that copper coloured girl of his dream in 1999. Timelines and paradoxes and shit, that is in every move. How to navigate the mind and stay sane yet having fun and dance away high as a kite?
How far can you go in production and writing music? The first part of this mix for Avenue Red is 130 BPM and is a fraction of a longer theme of songs that were written under the premise of just that: 130 BPM and from start to finished master in one sitting. Keep it simple and dancefloor. Then we break down to the living room: Tempo and mood varies more, looking back at the UK old Black Dog / 808 State / Orbital vibe. And now it goes dark: Bass, drone, sub-tones bleeding into noise and industrial, then the classical / ambient melodic ending." Mathtiiaas Rosén, January 2022

  • Avenue Red Podcast #193 - Estafet
Russian artist & DJ Kammerton AKA Stepan Chernov is back on the Avenue Red Podcast for his third release... this time, as a part deux for his second main podcast episode (192), he presents an acid encounter from a live event under his Estafet alias. Recorded somewhere in a shadowy basement in Moscow, this is an educational 3-hour dancefloor trip and tour de force of the true power of 303-tinged house and techno music, selected and performed live by a master craftsman.
"This recording was made at a closed Sunday afternoon event from the promo group Compromat. The party was dedicated to the acid and rave sound. It was a basement in the centre of Moscow and there were many problems with the organisation. For example, due to the fact that there was poor ventilation and there was a lot of moisture among the people, in fact, water dripped from the ceiling and walls, at some point some of the equipment burned out, but the positive impressions eventually outweighed all the shortcomings. Anyway, this is the music that emerged from that occasion. I think the power of the music strongly overcomes everything incidental and this product shows that music is the answer." • Avenue Red Podcast #192 - Kammerton
We welcome the return of Moscow-based Russian DJ & artist Kammerton (real name Stepan Chernov), whose debut Avenue Red Podcast 030 was released 2,543 days ago on New Year's Eve of 2014. He is well-known in the underground circuit across the most populous regions of Russia and has played at many great clubs over there, especially those focussed on deeper house, techno and minimal stylings. He was resident of Moscow clubs Shanti and Propaganda, as well as radio stations Deepmix, MixCult and RTS.FM.
As an artist, he is also known as Estafet, Moogam and Hand Rolling. His latest works show an increasing embrace of the darkness, with his latest works - the A4 EP on Moscow label Compromat - being described by the man himself as "Meditative acid surrounded by dark industrial atmospheres. Monotonous bass line drowning in its own reflections. Music on the verge of sound design... It will appeal to fans of the post-apocalyptic Blade Runner mood". This new mix contains hints of these aesthetics and sentiments, but is a much more active, pulsating, truly heads-down affair delivered with a serious tone and narrow-eyed gaze.
"This mix is an attempt to recreate and convey subtle emotions and moods from the afterparty at the Mutabor club, Moscow. Soft spatial sound with warming bass, sonic travel and cinematic sound design." Stepan Chernov, December 2021
