  • Avenue Red Podcast #191 - STL
Avenue Red is proud to present a long-time favourite artist of ours, a man who for over 20 years has been lurking in the darkest, most shadowy lairs of the deep subterranean underground... enter German musical mastermind Stephan Laubner, better known to most down here as STL, also as Lunatik Sound System. Located somewhere amid the Harz mountains in northern Germany, he is well known as a talented and vastly innovative producer, especially in experimental electronic, ambient and deep, dub techno circles. But almost nobody, even in these tightest and narrowest of niches has ever heard a DJ mix from this rather mysterious figure (aside from a totally out of the blue RA Podcast in 2014). Today, that changes, as he has decided to unleash some real fury right here on Avenue Red.
His debut release was called "Portside Waves" and was the 13th release on Perlon in 1999, with this spooky, insanely hypnotic track coming with some bizarre infinite locked-groove loops on one side - the flipside featuring Ricardo Villalobos & Martin Schopf under their Ric Y Martin guise. This paved the way for a discography that, at time of writing, totals approximately 100 releases. As well as being the mainstay of his Something label (link below), his releases are scattered across the likes of Smallville Records, echospace [detroit], Echocord, Silent Season, Assemble Music, Phonica White, The Untold Stories and many more. We highly respect and recommend a visit to his hand-rolled Something Records website too, which is packed with soul and contains some amazing secrets waiting to be found.
This mix is a live DJ performance riddled with trippy effects and unusual mixing techniques. A mix like no other. It is alien, beautiful, strange, venomous, intoxicating and downright awe-inspiring, as with everything this rare Midas has touched.
"Since a while ago I have been in contact with Pierre AKA Caillou. His new label is Chateau Chépère on which I have an upcoming EP. We chatted about music and mixing and shared a few links to each other's publications (he made 2 Avenue Red Podcast episodes: 136 and 172). He was sending me a link to an Avenue Red mix he was doing and so I - or we - had the idea to send a mix from me to AR as well.
Since most of the music I make is usually within the studio I am not really a DJ - more a production head. Nevertheless, sometimes I dig out those old vinyls and record a tape. The mix provided was done pretty much out of the feel and almost desire to play some records again. I don't do this every day. I keep that for special times or at meetings with some friends or family. Actually this session turned out to be very much full of life and energy. I wanted to keep with a certain flow. Tightness was not the best. However I think it is still enjoyable. Not just a dead mix, but something coming from taking the action to create something enjoyable, at least for my side. For me the music and the mixing often is something that belongs together. I mean a dub techno mix probably would not have been done this way. Glad Alec is liking it and I hope you enjoy this one at your end too :)" Stephan Laubner, November 2021

  • Avenue Red Podcast #190.1 - Danijel Kevic
Avenue Red presents part 2 of this 2-part podcast episode by Bosnian artist & DJ, Danijel Kevic. Keeping true to his neatly chiselled out sound, this mix gives us another taste of his fresh blend of deep, soulful house music stylings. It is a sweet, spicy, piquant brew that juxtaposes all manner of electronic-edged and jazz-tinged components, served on a nutritious bedrock of Detroit/Chicago goodness.
"Here's my second testament of house music delights for the Avenue Red crew. Big respect to all the listeners who take the time to absorb the real house music flavour!" Danijel Kevic, October 2021

  • Avenue Red Podcast #190 - Danijel Kevic
Avenue Red welcomes a newcomer to the main podcast series... enter the very dedicated and focused DJ/artist Danijel Kevic from Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country we didn't receive a single transmission from until now. Originally from the country's second city of Banja Luka, now based in the nearby city of Prijedor, Danijel is a key member of the Bosnian underground scene and has been collecting, producing and playing music for more than 10 years.
He has released his strongly Motor City & Windy City-influenced music on a host of fine labels such as Minuendo Recordings, Kolour Recordings, Tit Zero Recordings, Open Bar Music, Waxx Trax and Manuscript Recordings among others. Here Danijel has showcased his vibrant, deep, soulful brand of club & bar-friendly house music with a slickness, a professional touch in the name of tight flow and intricate mixing. This, we can confirm, is true house music.
"Here I present to the real underground heads of Avenue Red a 1-hour set of the kind of music I am focussed on and love to play and produce. This is the 1st part of a 2-part Avenue Red Podcast from me, with both representing my signature mixture of organic and vintage blends of Chicago and Detroit house, spliced with funk and deeper elements. Hope this brightens up your day!" Danijel Kevic, October 2021

  • Avenue Red Podcast #189 - Josh Lentink
It has been 1,139 days since the release of his "Avenue Red Is 5..." mix in August 2018 and we are so pleased to welcome the return of young London-based master selector, Josh Lentink! Josh has been very busy running his monthly shows on Timeline Music in the meantime, amongst setting up other new ventures (we'll let Josh introduce that below). Here we have the 6th contribution from Josh for Avenue Red... another foray into the dreamy wonderland of eclectic electronic music selections, stitched together in that unique way as only Josh knows how.
"This is the first mix I've recorded in a while. It came together pretty quickly from a pile of recent purchases. Although it's not necessarily a fair representation of the styles I've been listening to recently, it flowed nicely at the time.
Erebus Sounds is my latest project, currently a mix series but waiting on a few tracks to be completed for release in the not so distant future. Keep a look out and enjoy this long-overdue mix for Avenue Red x" Josh Lentink, September 2021

  • Avenue Red 1210 Mk13 - Moutier
After a 1-year hiatus, the Avenue Red 1210 podcast series has a fresh installment of 12 records, each one being 10+ years old. Stepping up to the platters we have Moutier, a veteran DJ duo from Leeds who have in recent years also turned their hands to being producers and label owners. In 2017 they launched their Enclave Records imprint, which alongside their own works has featured an illustrious roster of talent, including Harrison BDP, Javonntte, Kresy, BioRoot and Niklas Andersson among others.
No strangers to the origins of true deep house, these guys have dug through an enormity of special black gold releases over the last couple of decades. Also with them having played a lot of gigs around the UK (especially in the north of England) throughout this time, they are well qualified to compile and mix something timeless and special from their collective treasure trove of records. They show their fine skills as DJ's in the way they hold that elusive dancefloor groove as they flutter through the tracks. To dance or not to dance? It is simply not an option.
"Here's 12 of our favourite cuts from that truly golden period of 1995 until just after the millennium. We purposely avoided going for something super banging, but rather just some good old fashioned deepness and gentle undulation, building towards the unreal Journeyman (an under-the-radar alias of the legendary Jean F. Cochois, better known as The Timewriter) track at the end.
A lot of these producers get somewhat overlooked when looking back at this period and perhaps, apart from true Discogs saddos like us, don't get the love from the current generation of house heads that they deserve. Hopefully we've been able to do our little bit to turn some new ears onto this stuff. Enjoy!" Matt Mason & Jamie Adams AKA Moutier, August 2021

  • Avenue Red Podcast #188 - Chris Curtis
Glasgow/Aberdeen lad Chris Curtis, a long-time DJ and aficionado of awesome music, a prominent figure in the real Scottish underground scene has stepped forth, breaking an Avenue Red silence of no less than 51 days.
After a healthy hiatus while the world was otherwise distracted, it is finally time to bring those who "see red" a fresh mix from a truly passionate and knowledgable musical soul who is one of the founder members of the excellent Glasgow-based institution, Club Sounds Live. Also known as CSL, it is an underground music movement and a hive of music knowledge with a strong membership of proper Sub Club, Arches, Pressure etc. veterans. We are so happy to finally restart the engine and bring yet another special mix of underground gems.
"I've been a listener of Avenue Red mixes for several years, so I'm delighted to now be a part of the quality electronic expedition that is - Avenue Red!
I've been DJ'ing for 20 years now in bars and clubs, mostly in Aberdeen (Scotland). From around 2005 to 2010, I was a resident at a locally famed techno night called Metropolis at the Pelican Club. Over the years, I had the pleasure of warming up for some brilliant international guests, also playing resident nights alongside night curator Chris Knox.
I love the warm up maybe even more than the headline slot. There's something special about seeing an empty dancefloor bubble into a coiled spring ready for the headline act to come on. I'm a fan of long transitions and unexpected drops and I think long a warm up set gives you the perfect opportunity to craft an atmosphere and experience what the crowd is feeling at a more intimate level.
As far as influences and genre go, they are varied and I'm quite open minded. I'm a huge fan of zen like melancholic sounds, deep grooves and pounding hypnotic rhythms. Although I'm also a fan of downtempo, funk and disco, I've kept things mostly electronic for this mix.
Currently, I present the monthly subSine | Sessions show on Groove City Radio (Glasgow) which aside from great guest mixes, promotes the music of up and coming talent from the subSine Academy of Electronic Music in Glasgow.
This winter I'm planning to hibernate, and maybe even finish one of several tracks I have on the go at the moment. Greetings from Scotland - Hope you enjoy the mix." Chris Curtis, August 2021

  • Avenue Red Podcast #187 - Tom Larson
Avenue Red is proud to present a mix by an underground mixtape machine known as Tom Larson (real name Tommy Köhler), who hails from the famous East German "toy town", Sonneberg. If you scroll down on his Soundcloud page (link below), you will see that he has already paid a visit to literally all of the other contemporary underground house/techno/dub techno podcasts with one of his tightly mixed, thoughtfully compiled selections of all things deep, groovy and spaced-out.
This new one for Avenue Red grabs your attention right from the start. Crisp, fresh bongo beats laced with moody, smokey film noir piano atmospheres set the stage, then proceeding directly onwards into devilish, dubbed-out minimal techno and deep house, then drifting into something lighter and more uplifting... and back again. Tommy shows his sophistication and experience as a DJ with the continuous shifts in mood between clusters of tracks, which gives a feeling that you are always heading into some new territory, but never knowing how this journey will proceed or end.
"It's difficult to find some words about me. I'm just a home-based DJ who made many mixes for various podcasts. It's just a hobby. I love music, I love finding interesting artists & labels. My influences are coming from Detroit and Chicago, but I think my sound is always "Deep". Deep is a feeling, a state of mind, so the range of music that I would play is wide, but it's got to have that deep feeling!
I've been mixing since 2001 (20 Years), where I started simply with 2 turntables and a mixer and later I progressed to digital DJ'ing. I'm interested in producing my own music but for now that is merely a dream. It seems too difficult and hard to reach because I just don't have the necessary knowledge and maybe the input from an artist. That's why I keep focusing on mixing.
Of course, as a DJ you want bookings, but if you don't have the right connections you're lost in the large DJ pool. I don't want to get lost in that race, I am here just for the enjoyment of the music and to push out the amazing things that I constantly discover for others to enjoy too." Tommy Köhler, June 2021

  • Avenue Red Podcast #186 - Volar & S.Aers
Avenue Red is back to present more ace underground Russian DJ's, this time a young duo named Volar & S.Aers from the city of Perm, which lies on the banks of the Kama River, close to the Ural Mountains in central Russia. Their hometown of Perm is actually the Easternmost city of Europe.
These guys have been following Avenue Red for some years and have crafted an exclusive 106-minute-long mix of deep, driving, drugged-out house and techno that cruises along steadily at around 124 bpm for the whole duration. Expect to hear all kinds of Terry Lee Brown Jr.-esque deepness blended with turbulent dub techno sounds, forgotten early 00's west coast US house records and other oddball inclusions that gel together in a mix that is truly, fully Avenue Red - embossed with the full suite of hallmarks.
"We are both from Perm city, Russia. The mix was recorded live during a late night session in our studio. We are participants of the DJ collective LACONISM: https://soundcloud.com/laconism_music - check it out and enjoy exploring this unique selection! Big thanks to Avenue Red for all the incredible and inspirational mixes that it has delivered over the years!"

  • Avenue Red Podcast #184 - Ayumi
Avenue Red is proud to present a multi-genre underground DJ/selector who we have known about and admired since around the time Avenue Red launched in 2013. Enter Ayumi from Brooklyn, New York - a very busy and productive mixmaster who can string together a perfect set of seemingly any style of electronic music with equal aplomb. With perfect mixing and interesting tunes that keep you curious, guessing what's next, grooving, dreaming, stepping... he has done over 100 such high quality mixes, which are all available on his Soundcloud page.
The majority of his mixes are of a style that overlaps in large amounts with the stylistic output of Avenue Red, so we figured it was high time to send an invitation his way. In response, Ayumi has dropped us 73 minutes of deep, dubbed-out house and techno tracks, mixed to the maximum standard and intelligently arranged into something wholesome and beautiful that is greater than the sum of its parts.
"Here's a mix of Dub Techno / House that represents my journey living in my neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn, NYC. I wanted to capture how it is raw, groovy with so much soul. Dub Techno / House can often sound similar and sometimes even monotonous, which can be great for smooth listening. For this mix though, I focused on a track selection that shows variety and character, similar to Bushwick." Ayumi, May 2021
