Despite human scheming, God had in mind a plan for His Son. While some would lay the blame for Christ's death on the mob at hand and the seemingly relentless and fated chain of events, Jesus indicates that He is not the helpless victim of circumstances. He is willing to proceed to His sacrificial death outside of Jerusalem, and then as He said, "on the third day I will reach my goal." Jesus goes to His death and resurrection for our salvation, for the forgiveness of the sins of the whole world.

To leave a legacy of faith and faithfulness, we will leave something of the world in the world. To be sure, worldly things can tempt us, as Jesus was tempted. But they can also be used for God’s glory and the spreading of the Gospel. Giving our time seems like a sacrifice, and perhaps from one perspective it is. But our gift of time with grandchildren or with sinners impacts the world even after we’re gone. The same for our monetary gifts. And we don’t need more time or money in heaven, so we may as well use it all here.

Moses dies, and Joshua takes the mantle of leadership. “For no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel” (Deuteronomy 34:12). Good luck, Joshua! Seeing the great works of saints before us too often intimidates us, paralyzes us from doing the good work of the Gospel today. Remember, the same God that worked through them, the same Jesus who stood with them, stands with and works through you.

Honoring our parents is command (#4). There are ways we honor them when we are children, and there are ways we honor them when we are adults. There are ways we honor them after they go to heaven. In all times, we honor them by honoring our Heavenly Father.

Saint Valentine was arrested for continuing to evangelize and was sent to Emperor Claudius himself. Claudius took a liking to him until Valentine tried to convince him to embrace Christianity, whereupon Claudius refused and condemned Valentine to death. Valentine refused and Claudius' command was executed outside the Flaminian Gate February 14, 269. In every generation martyrs have testified that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and Savior of the world. Without their testimony, where would we be?! Without our testimony, where will the next generations be?

God’s mercy never ends. In fact, it is new every morning. We live out our faith by caring for the physical needs of others, sometimes called mercy ministries.  Everyone is encouraged to join in serving within and beyond the walls of our church.  Martin Luther once said, “I serve my neighbor because he is my neighbor.” With no agendas, a part of God’s mission is for us to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, adopt the orphan… and so we do.
