  • Podcast: Persistence (definition series)
    PERSISTENCE
    What is persistence?
    Dictionary.com defines it as:
    noun
    1. the act or fact of persisting.
    2. the quality of being persistent:
    3. continued existence or occurrence

My favorite one is the 3. continued existence or occurrence.

It’s pretty simplistic if you as me.  Do you continue the existence of what you want or desire? Do you continue the occurrence of them as well? Then you may have persistence.

Some synonyms (similar words) are endurance, grit, stamina, tenacity, perseverance and resolution.
And some antonyms are apathy, laziness, lethargy, weakness and indifference.

Does the meaning speak out to you yet, is it clear?

Some quotes are as following (not fully synonymous with the podcast) from goodreads.com (bad ass website):
“The best way out is always through.”

    ― Robert Frost
“Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.”

    ― Winston S. Churchill
“The three great essentials to achieve anything worthwhile are, first, hard work; second, stick-to-itiveness; third, common sense.”

    ― Thomas A. Edison

Now I don’t just quote successful, crusty old white dudes.

Here’s a long one from my former favorite rapper:

“Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete? Proving nature’s laws wrong, it learned to walk without having feet. Funny, it seems to by keeping it’s dreams; it learned to breathe fresh air. Long live the rose that grew from concrete when no one else even cared.”

― Tupac Shakur, The Rose That Grew from Concrete

So you should have a good idea what “persistence” means.
    (Listen to the podcast below):
    http://traffic.libsyn.com/bminusshow/persistence.mp3
I know, most of you know what persistence is, in a sense at least. But ever since I was a kid, I loved to simply just look up definitions of words and some of the words I loved over the years have changed meaning to me.
When I used to think of persistence, I had an image of an older lady praying to Jesus (like the parable from the bible).
Now, I mostly picture myself doing cross-fit and sweating. But I know it’s more than that.
In actuality, it is me doing this blog and podcast. This writing is actually a retro edit. I have improved in my blog/article writing and decided to re-write this post.
I have also set new standards for writing, SEO and using the podcast to supplement the articles instead of vice versa. THAT IS A RESULT OF PERSISTENCE. I originally wrote the first “persistence” version late 2017. It is now early spring 2018.
    AND IM REVISITING OLD POSTS.
How do you like them apples.
All joking aside, I really think my persistence in improving myself physically, mentally and spiritually is HELPING ME IN ALL AREAS OF MY LIFE.
That’s the reward from persistence and I still think continuing to persist will have MORE REWARDS as time goes by.
So I want to encourage you to read this post again, listen to the podcast on this post as much as you need,

We got the courage to call some GTP compadres and I got the bravery to man up the mixer with much switching of wires; due to a lack of an adapter.

    (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Somehow it all managed to work.
The sound quality isn’t the greatest; but considering a majority of this episode was improv and from a cell phone.
I think you will bypass the sound quality and appreciate the content of the show.

  • Podcast: GTP part 1 of 2 with Felipe and Phil
(the podcast is below a few paragraphs)
There must be a secret formula for people to “escape” their regular routines and enjoy a trip with their favorite guys or the girls.
We all see these people either posting snippets of their trips online or hearing cool stories of bonding from a weekend retreat.
Some people get jealous. But not the ones who live how they want to and still have a killer family / personal life.

    (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

I have known Felipe and Phil for quite a while now. I have not been around for the past few trips with the guys, but still feel I can hang with the GTP as one of them.
We discuss the challenges and importance of getting away, but not just with your significant other, but with your closest friends.
This is one of two episodes we made for the night. I won’t lie, we sound a little slurry on the second episode.
    http://traffic.libsyn.com/bminusshow/gtp_episode.mp3
But if you enjoy this podcast, you will DEFINITELY enjoy the second.
    Thanks for the support.

  • Self Confidence
    Self Confidence
    http://traffic.libsyn.com/bminusshow/self_confidence.mp3
This is a well used word or concept in my vocab and website. I emphasize it because it means the world in LIFE.
    Dictionary definition
    noun
    1. realistic confidence in one’s own judgment, ability, power, etc.
    2. excessive or inflated confidence in one’s own judgment, ability, etc
    Synonyms
    -self-assurance, inner strength, positive self-image
    Antonyms
    -unsure, weakness, wavering, fluctuation, inconsistency
*There can sometimes be a fine line between insecurity and actual real self confidence.
Just worry about yourself and you will decipher the fake from the real once you have it.
    Relevant quotes
“Believe you can and you’re halfway there.”

    ― Theodore Roosevelt
“If being an egomaniac means I believe in what I do and in my art or music, then in that respect you can call me that… I believe in what I do, and I’ll say it.” ― John Lennon
“Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string.”― Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t–you’re right.” ― Henry Ford
    My interpretation
Those who appear confident on the outside may or may not be really confident people.
Interpretation can be held in the eye of any beholder.
YOU are the ONLY ONE who can really judge your self-confidence.
If you let others influence you negatively, then you lack confidence in some areas of your life.
As John Lennon states above, in a nutshell, he is going to do his thing because he believes that it is right, he believes in HIMSELF.
Now a word of caution: use your self-confidence for good.
That is almost the difference between being a criminal or douche and a heroic bad ass.
    I strive for the latter.
Look within for self confidence. Develop it by practicing what you love, what you are good at and what you want to strive in.
Listen to positive things, set goals, create and recite your own affirmations.

Find a purpose in life for yourself. Try not to rely on others if you do not need to.
If you can do it on your own better, do it.
    Heed Henry Ford’s words above.
Now I think we can ebb and flow on self confidence. Some days we have more of it, some we have less of it.
    Cultivate it.
There is a shit load of advice for you there.
Take it or leave it, but believe in yourself.
I’m here to help you boost it, as I want to be boosted when I am down. I want to be boosted higher when I am up.
I basically do most of the stuff I mention in this article to boost myself. Yes, I use tools and other peoples’ quotes or lessons, but that’s totally okay.
Reach within and around and you will find it. Now find it!

  • DATING STUFF with guest and my good friend Phil
DATING STUFF with guest and my good friend Phil
Listen to the podcast for more details and stories here:

Hey everyone, I ACTUALLY GOT A GUEST ON MY SHOW this time around. It was a pretty spontaneous thing though. Phil texted me around 6pm asking if we could hang, podcast.
His wife was going downtown for a friends birthday and he had a babysitter so he asked to come by.
He showed up and my baby was asleep also, so I filled up our beer glasses and a growler with my new Juicy Hazy IPA home brew and we braved the heat in my man cave and pulled off a nearly 40 minute podcast.
We could have kept going, but decided to keep some sweat and hydration in our bodies from the bolstering 90+ degree man cave.
We also had to have the fan on, so you will likely hear some “white noise” on this one, but cut us some slack; it was 106 degrees earlier that day.
    ABOUT THE PODCAST:
So we briefly reviewed the www.bminusshow.com website and decided we would talk about our past dating successes. A lot of what we spoke about revolved around the concepts in this book:

(If you click the link/image and buy something I will get a commission).
The reason this book was discussed is because it was a turning point for both of us. In fact Phil let me use this book after he met his soulmate. I then used it and got the woman of my dreams.
Of course this was supplemented with persistence, work, mistakes, supplemental research, etc.
    So enjoy the show!

  • Dry hopping 101 for the B minus brewer
Dry Hopping – my first time and a follow up
Sup. So I think I made a pretty kick ass IPA, it is in the secondary fermenter as of thie orginal date of this post/podcast, and I have just dry hopped for the first time.
I took a smell from the fermenter. I smelt pineapple, fruit, tropical goodness.
In hindsight, it was the best smelling IPA I made.
I hope it tastes good.  I missed my OG and FG by a bit, so I know I either have a yeast, mash or milling issue.
*Update* The beer was pretty damn good, and long gone. Even my non IPA drinking fiance liked it. It was an original recipe that turned out clutch. There were not any off flavors and the hop aroma dominated the beer in a good way. I will always dry hop my IPA’s and PA’s from here on out.
Next time I will focus on milling my grains a little finer, holding my mash a bit longer and using hotter sparge water.
*Update*I fixed my grain mill and it crushes wonderfully now. I also hold a longer mash time (1-1.5 hours) and as for sparging hotter…I do this every time now. Bottom line is I almost always hit my original gravity now.
This post will help you understand what dry hopping is and I will discuss what I did my first time actually doing dry hopping.
    __________________________________
The original podcast is at the bottom.
    What is dry hopping?
Dry hopping, in a nutshell, is adding hops towards the end of beer fermentation, after fermentation, or both.
The dry hop addition helps with the aroma of the beer. So don’t pitch onion-cheese smelling hops  (old hops) here…unless you like that style (you can use those old hops for sour beers).
You want to add fresh hops. Whole cone or pellet hops are the most popular way to dry hop. I’m sure there are people who use lupulin powder or hop extract, but I haven’t yet.
    When to dry hop?
There are a lot of debates on when to dry hop. My opinion is whatever works the best for you then do that. Of course, commercial breweries need consistency and practice to truly know the best method to not waste tons of beer.
I did speak to one popular local brewery who said they use pellet hops, all day.
Keep in mind I speak from a homebrewer’s perspective.
I have read that the best time to dry hop is 3-5 days after fermentation starts, which would make it towards the end of your fermentation, yet with some fermentation left.
My understanding is you want to let the chemistry of fermentation, that is still producing Co2, to take care of the hops.
A second dry hop is common practice a few days after your first dry hop; after fermentation is just about done.
There are likely more scientific reasons and probably drunken philosophical reasons behind as to exactly why. I won’t go there.
    How long to dry hop?
This shit is debatable also; how long to dry hop. I just go with what works and makes sense. The general rule of thumb is 5-7 days for each dry hop addition. Some do more, some do less.
    I do 5-7 days.
You obviously want to keep the hops in long enough to extract the scent from them.
You don’t want to leave them in too long as they can start to extract nastier smells and tastes like grass and shit like that.
    How to dry hop
There are different methods to dry hopping. Some peeps just toss the hops in to the primary or secondary.
As for me, I like to use a sanitized muslin bag with the hops. It equates to less mess.
You have the option to tie the muslin bag with fishing line or a string and let it hang in there and you can pull the bag right out after your committed dry hop time.
Of course you will have to get the bag through the hole (if it’s a small hole).
I actually highly recommend using a string and pulling them out in order to avoid oxygenating your fermented beer (which oxygen is the enemy to fresh be...

  • Podcast: How the process of making beer correlates with processes in life
Here’s my impromptu comeback podcast of the year (to date).
Scroll to the bottom of this post for the podcast
I took a couple of weeks off from podcasting; not on purpose though. Two reasons I think I did this:
    1) I was holding out for a guest, which obviously didn’t happen
    2)  I was biding time to analyze my yeast with my unused microscope
Listening to this episode is probably easier to understand what I am saying.
For you audio challenged people, I started talking about the very average home brew I was drinking, and it turned into a philosophical chat about how this correlates with other processes in life.
Like how blockages can hinder your progress and such.
I also mention to only get in trouble that is reversible I.E. avoid jail time, getting condemned, being unforgiven, etc.
Thanks for tuning in. Until next time.
