'बूढासागरः’, ‘सरमनसागरः', 'कैरायीसागरः', ‘कुण्डमसागरः' इत्येते चत्वारः विशालसरोवराः अद्यापि पाटनक्षेत्रे सुस्थितौ सन्ति । तेषां निर्माणं के कृतवन्तः ? कथं कृतवन्तः ? तेषाम् इतिहासः एव अस्याः कथायाः वस्तु वर्तते ।

In Patan, four large lakes—Buddhasagar, Sarmanasagar, Kairayisagar, and Kundamasagar—still exist today. The story tells of who built them, how they were constructed, and their historical background.
कस्मिंश्चित् उदारचरिते राजनि प्रजाजनाः विशेषादरवन्तः आसन् । तस्मिन् राज्ये कश्चन निन्दाशीलः जनः अपि आसीत् । राजा एतत् ज्ञात्वा कदाचित् गोधूमपूर्णम् एकं स्यूतम्, एकं फेनकम्, एकं खण्डशर्करायुक्तं स्यूतं च निन्दकाय प्रेषितवान् । सः सन्तुष्टः निन्दकः अचिन्तयत् 'मम योग्यताम् अभिज्ञाय आदरार्थम् एतानि वस्तूनि महाराजेन प्रेषितानि' इति । किन्तु यदा तस्य सुहृत् 'एतानि उपायनानि राज्ञा विशेषाभिप्रायेण प्रेषितानि सन्ति' इति उक्त्वा तेषाम् अभिप्रायान् अकथयत् तदा सः निन्दकः स्वस्य व्यवहारं स्मरन् महतीं लज्जाम् अनुभूतवान् ।

In a certain kingdom, the people greatly respected their noble king. Yet among them lived a man fond of criticism. Learning of this, the king once sent him three gifts: a sack of wheat, a piece of cloth, and a bag of sugar. The critic, pleased, thought the king had recognized his worth. But when a friend explained the deeper meaning behind these gifts, the critic realized they symbolized the flaws in his behavior. Remembering his own conduct, he felt deep shame.
कस्यचन कार्यस्य निमित्तं राज्यात् बहिः गतवतः शिवराजस्य प्रत्यागमने विलम्बः जातः । यतः सूर्यास्ततः सूर्योदयं यावत् दुर्गात् बहिः गमनम्, अन्तःप्रवेशः च निषिद्धः इति नियमः आसीत् अतः मुख्यप्रवेशद्वारं पिहितम् आसीत् । संन्यासिनः वेषं धृत्वा प्रवेशद्वारस्य समीपं आगतः शिवराजः । अन्तःप्रवेशं निराकृतवान् द्वारपालकः । किञ्चित्कालानन्तरं शिवराजः संन्यासिवेषम् अपनीय स्वस्य निजरूपं दर्शितवान् । तथापि द्वारपालकेन द्वारोद्घाटनं नैव कृतम् । तस्य कर्तव्यनिष्ठां धैर्यञ्च दृष्ट्वा अग्रे तस्मै उपायनं दत्तवान् शिवराजः ।

Once, King Shivaji returned late from a journey outside the fort. By rule, entry and exit were forbidden between sunset and sunrise, so the main gate was closed. Disguised as a monk, Shivaji approached the gate, but the guard refused him entry. Later, Shivaji revealed his true identity, yet the guard still did not open the gate, firmly adhering to his duty. Impressed by the guard’s discipline and courage, Shivaji rewarded him with a gift.
बलूचदले कश्चन सैनिकः आसीत् महम्मद् उस्मान् इति । अनेकेषु युद्धेषु भागं वहन् महत् शौर्यं प्रदर्शयन् उस्मान्-वर्यः 'ब्रिगेडियर्' पदं प्राप्नोत् । तदीयं देशप्रेम असदृशम् आसीत् । १९४७ तमे वर्षे यदा भारतस्य विभागः जातः तदवसरे निर्णीतं यत् बलूचदलं पाकिस्थानाधीनं स्यात् इति । किन्तु ब्रि.उस्मान्-वर्यः पाकिस्थानस्य अधीनतां न अङ्गीकृतवान् । १९४८ तमे वर्षे यदा पाकिस्थानेन भारतस्य कश्चन भूभागः वशीकृतः आसीत् तदा अपायस्थितौ अपि युद्धं कृत्वा 'नौशेरा' नामकस्य प्रदेशस्य प्रतिप्राप्तौ सः एव प्रमुखपात्रम् ऊढवान् ।

In the Baluch regiment served a soldier named Mohammad Usman. He fought in many battles with great bravery and rose to the rank of Brigadier. His patriotism was unmatched. In 1947, when India was partitioned, it was decided that the Baluch regiment would go to Pakistan. Brigadier Usman refused to accept Pakistani command. In 1948, when Pakistan occupied part of Indian territory, he fought valiantly and played the leading role in regaining the region of Naushera, even in grave danger.
कश्चन आचार्यः शिष्यं सुबोधं कथं जीवनीयम् इति बोधयति - 'अध्ययनं, जीवनम् इत्यादीनि विघ्नरहितानि न भवन्ति कदापि । विघ्नानां मध्ये एव चिन्तारहितं जीवनं यापयितुं कौशलं सम्पादनीयम् । तदा एव जीवनं सुखकरं भवति । विघ्नेषु सत्सु अपि कथं जीवनीयम् इत्येतत् अवगतं चेत् जीवनं कदापि कष्टाय न भवेत्' इति ।

A teacher once explained to his student how life should be lived: “Study and life are never free from obstacles. The skill to live peacefully amidst difficulties must be cultivated. Only then does life become truly joyful. If one understands how to live even when obstacles arise, life will never feel burdensome.”
यदा ठाकुरदासः हठात् दिवङ्गतः तदा कुटुम्बपोषणभारः तस्य पत्न्याः उपरि अपतत् । सा कष्टेन धनम् अर्जयित्वा प्रीत्या पुत्रं पोषितवती । सः अध्ययनसमाप्तेः अनन्तरम् उद्योगं प्राप्य धनं सम्पादयन्, पूर्वं मात्रे दत्तं वचनं स्मरन् विद्यालयानां, चिकित्सालयानां, सहायताकेन्द्राणां च आरम्भं कृतवान् । तस्य महात्मनः नाम ईश्वरचन्द्रविद्यासागरः ।

When Thakur Das suddenly passed away, the burden of supporting the family fell on his wife. With great effort she earned money and lovingly raised her son. After completing his studies, the son found employment and, remembering the promise he had once made to his mother, used his earnings to establish schools, hospitals, and aid centers. This noble soul became known as Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar.
अस्यां कथायां कश्चन संन्यासी कस्यचन शुनकस्य व्यवहारं दृष्ट्वा चिन्तयति - जीवनयात्रायां यावच्छक्यं वस्तुमोहः न्यूनीकरणीयः । वस्तूनि अल्पानि चेत् आनन्दः अधिकः । 'अहं सर्वं जानामि' इत्यादयः भ्रमाः, अहङ्कारः, क्रोधः इत्यादयः अपि वस्तूनि इव भारायन्ते एव जीवने । तानि अपि याच्छक्यं न्यूनीकरणीयानि ।

A monk once observed the behavior of a dog and reflected: In life’s journey, attachment to possessions should be minimized. Fewer possessions bring greater joy. Illusions such as “I know everything,” along with pride and anger, are also burdens like objects. These too should be reduced as much as possible.
चतुर्दशवर्षात्मकं वनवासं समाप्य आगतवतः श्रीरामस्य राज्याभिषेकमहोत्सवः सम्पन्नः । लक्ष्मणः, भरतः, शत्रुघ्नः, वानरवीराः च सर्वे सीतारामौ परितः स्थितवन्तः आसन् । तदा झटिति लक्ष्मणः किमपि भाषितवान् । सर्वेषां दृष्टिः तस्य उपरि अपतत् । सः किञ्चित् विहस्य जृम्भणं कृत्वा निद्रामग्नः अभवत् । हासः किमर्थम् इति सर्वेषाम् अपि कौतुकम् आश्चर्यं च । एकैकस्यापि एकैकरीत्या चिन्तनम् ।

After completing fourteen years of exile, Rama’s coronation was celebrated. Lakshmana, Bharata, Shatrughna, and the valiant monkeys all stood around Sita and Rama. Suddenly Lakshmana spoke something, drawing everyone’s attention. Then, smiling slightly, he yawned and fell asleep. All were curious and astonished, each pondering in their own way the reason for his smile.
महतः राज्यस्य अधिपतिः राजा सुकृतशर्मा कदाचित् भव्यं कञ्चन प्रासादं निर्मीतवान् । तस्य प्रासादस्य दर्शनाय आगताः जनाः बहुधा प्रशंसन्ति स्म । एतेन राज्ञः महान् सन्तोषः भवति स्म । अथ एकदा कश्चन संन्यासी आगतवान् । राजा आत्मना निर्मितं प्रासादं तस्मै दर्शितवान् । आदौ संन्यासी प्रासादस्य श्लाघनं कृतवान् । अनन्तरं तत्रत्यं दोषद्वयम् उक्तवान् । संन्यासिनः कथनस्य आशयः अवगतः राज्ञा । राजा तस्मादेव दिनात् प्रजाहितकार्येषु आत्मानं पूर्णतया नियुक्तवान् ।

King Sukritasharma once built a magnificent palace, which visitors praised greatly, bringing him joy. One day, a wandering monk arrived. The king proudly showed him the palace. The monk first admired it, but then pointed out two flaws. Understanding the deeper meaning of the monk’s words, the king from that very day devoted himself fully to the welfare of his people.
राजा वसुधेन्द्रः प्रतापवान् धार्मिकः प्रजावत्सलः च । राज्ञः महान् खेदः नाम अपत्यं नास्ति इति । पुत्रकामेष्टियागं कृतवान् । यागस्य अन्ते अशरीरवाणी श्रुता 'औरसपुत्रप्राप्तिभाग्यं नास्ति तव । अतः योग्यः बालकः दत्तकरूपेण स्वीक्रियताम्' इति । देशस्य उत्तराधिकारी सुयोग्यः भवेत् इत्यतः दत्तकत्वयोग्यस्य अन्वेषणाय राजा स्वयं निर्गतः । कश्चन तरुणः दृष्टः यः त्यागात् एव मोक्षः इति चिन्तयति स्म । तं तरुणं दत्तकरूपेण स्वीकृत्य राज्यपालनादिकं तस्मै समर्प्य राजा पत्न्या सह वनं गतवान् ।

King Vasudhendra was brave, pious, and caring, but childless. After performing the Putrakāmeṣṭi sacrifice, a divine voice told him he would not have a natural son and should adopt a worthy boy. Seeking a capable heir, he found a youth devoted to renunciation. The king adopted him, entrusted the kingdom to him, and retired to the forest with his queen.
