    जयसलमेरस्य राज्ञः रतनसिंहस्य पुत्री रत्नावली शौर्येण अप्रतिमा । कदाचित् अल्लावुद्दीनस्य सेनापतिः मल्लिकाफुरः रतनसिंहं पराजेतुं ससैन्यम् आगतः । राजकुमारी रत्नावली सैन्यस्य नेतृत्वम् ऊढवती । मल्लिकाफुरः शत्रुहस्तगतः अभविष्यत् । किन्तु कथञ्चित् आत्मानं रक्षन् रणरङ्गात् पलायत । सः कुतन्त्रम् आश्रित्य दुर्गस्य अन्तः गमनाय मार्गं दर्शयितुं कस्मैचित् निर्धनाय वृद्धाय प्रभूतं धनं दत्तवान् । किं सः वृद्धः मार्गं दर्शयति ? सः जयसलमेरस्य राज्ञः द्रोहं करोति ? इति कौतुकेन कथाम् इमां शृण्वन्तु ।

    In Jaisalmer, King Ratansingh’s daughter Ratnavali was unmatched in courage. Once, Alauddin’s general Malik Kafur came with his army to defeat Ratansingh. Princess Ratnavali herself led the forces, and Malik Kafur was nearly captured. Somehow he escaped from the battlefield. Later, he resorted to trickery, giving a poor old man a large sum of money to show him a secret way into the fort. Whether that old man betrays Jaisalmer’s king or not is the suspense of this tale.

  • उदारम् आचरणम्

    लक्ष्मणमेघनादयोः युद्धे लक्ष्मणेन प्रयुक्तः बाणः मेघनादस्य हस्तम् अकर्तयत् । सः हस्तः रावणस्य अन्तःपुरे मेघनादस्य पत्न्याः सुलोचनायाः पुरतः अपतत् । दुःखितः सुलोचना सहगमनं कर्तुं निश्चयं अकरोत् । किन्तु दाहसंस्कारार्थं मेघनादस्य शिरः आवश्यकम् । सा धैर्येण श्रीरामस्य दर्शनाय प्रस्थिता । श्रीरामः तस्यां महान्तम् आदरं प्रदर्शयन् मेघनादस्य शिरः दत्तवान् । मेघनादस्य अन्त्यसंस्कारं निमित्तीकृत्य एकं दिनं युद्धस्य विरामम् अपि घोषितवान् ।

    In the battle between Lakshmana and Meghanada, Lakshmana’s arrow cut off Meghanada’s arm. The severed arm fell in front of Meghanada’s wife, Sulochana, in Ravana’s inner palace. Grief-stricken, she resolved to perform sahagamana (self-mmolation). But for the funeral rites, Meghanada’s head was required. With courage, she went to meet Lord Rama. Rama honored her greatly and gave her Meghanada’s head. Out of respect, he even declared a one-day pause in the war so that Meghanada’s funeral rites could be performed.

  • जितेन्द्रियता

    पञ्चदशवर्षीयः कश्चन तरुणः कञ्चन महात्मानम् उपसर्प्य संन्यासदीक्षां याचते । पुनः पुनः याचनेन महात्मा तस्य परीक्षां करोति । परीक्षया तरुणस्य जितेन्द्रियता साधिता अस्ति इति महात्मना ज्ञातम् । अतः संन्यासादीक्षां दास्यामि इत्युक्त्वा तं तरुणम् आशिषा अनुगृह्णाति । सः एव भाविनि काले 'महात्मा ज्ञानेश्वरः' इति ख्यातः जातः ।

    A fifteen-year-old youth approached a saint, requesting initiation into renunciation. The saint tested him repeatedly, and through the trials realized that the boy had mastered self-control. Then the saint blessed him, saying he would grant initiation. In time, that youth became famous as Mahatma Jnaneshvara.

  • कः आरोग्यसम्पन्नः ?

    वाग्भटः विख्यातः प्राचीनः वैद्यराजः । एकदा धन्वन्तरिः पृथ्वीतले वैद्यानां परीक्षा करणीया इति विचिन्त्य शुकस्य रूपं धृत्वा एकं प्रश्नं त्रिवारम् उच्चार्य वैद्यान् अपृच्छत् - 'कोऽरुक्? कोऽरुक्? कोऽरुक्?’ (कः आरोग्यसम्पन्नः भवति इत्यर्थः)। वैद्याः विविधानि उत्तराणि दत्तवन्तः किन्तु धन्वन्तरिः न सन्तुष्टः । यदा वाग्भटं प्रति आगत्य प्रश्नं अपृच्छत् तदा सः उत्तरयति 'हितभुक्, मितभुक्, उष्णभुक्' इति । तस्य आशयः आहारः हितकारः मितरूपः उष्णः च भवेत् । वाग्भटस्य उत्तरेण धन्वन्तरिः सन्तुष्टः जातः ।

    Vagbhata was a renowned ancient physician. Once, Dhanvantari decided to test the physicians of the earth. Disguised as a parrot, he asked three times, “Ko’ruk? Ko’ruk? Ko’ruk?” (meaning, “Who is truly healthy?”). The physicians gave various answers, but none satisfied him. When he asked Vagbhata, the reply was: “One who eats wholesome food, moderate food, and warm food.” By this he meant that diet should be beneficial, taken in moderation, and warm. Dhanvantari was pleased with this answer.

  • तारतम्यभावम् आचरन्ति अज्ञानिनः

    कदाचित् कश्चन महात्मा प्रयाणावसरे पिपासाम् अनुभूतवान् । कस्यचित् चर्मकारस्य कुटीरं प्राप्य जलं पृष्टवान् । किन्तु निम्नकुलीयः सः चर्मकारः जलं कथं ददानि इति चिन्तयति । तदा महात्मा वदति यत् भगवतः दृष्ट्या सर्वे समानाः । ये तारतम्यम् आचरेयुः ते तु अज्ञानिनः । स्पृश्यास्पृश्यभेदः मानवेन कल्पितः.....’। तदनन्तरं सः चर्मकारः सन्तोषेण तस्मै महात्मने जलं दत्तवान् ।

    Once, a saint felt thirsty while traveling and asked for water at the hut of a cobbler. The cobbler hesitated, thinking of his low caste. The saint then said, “In the eyes of God, all are equal. Those who make distinctions are ignorant. The division of touchable and untouchable is man-made.” Hearing this, the cobbler joyfully gave him water.

  • स्वातन्त्र्यप्रिया अभयादेवी

    उल्लाळराज्यं किञ्चन सम्पद्भरितं लघुसंस्थानम् । गच्छता कालेन तस्य संस्थानस्य राज्ञः मद्यपानप्रवृत्तिः जाता । पोर्तुगीसाः तस्य मैत्रीं सम्पादितवन्तः । मद्यपानाय यत् मद्यं क्रेतव्यं, तन्निमित्तं स्वसंस्थानमेव पोर्तुगीसाधीनं कृतवान् सः । राज्ञी अभयादेवी संस्थानरक्षणाय स्वयं शासनसूत्रं गृहीतवती । पोर्तुगीस्-अभयादेव्योः मध्ये जाते युद्धे पोर्तुगीसानां पराजयः जातः ।

    Ullal was a small but prosperous principality. Over time, its king fell into the habit of drinking. The Portuguese befriended him, and in order to buy liquor, he placed his state under Portuguese control. To protect the principality, Queen Abhaya Devi herself took charge of governance. A war broke out between Abhaya Devi and the Portuguese, and ultimately the Portuguese were defeated.

  • वास्तविकः धनिकः

    कस्मिंश्चित् ग्रामे देवालयनिर्माणार्थं धनं प्राप्तुं पञ्च जनाः प्रतिगृहं गतवन्तः । यः अधिकं धन दास्यति तस्य नाम्नः उट्टङ्कनं देवालये भवितुम् अर्हति इति निश्चितवन्तः । कश्चन कोट्यधीशः लक्षरूप्यकपरिमितं धनं दत्तवान् । कदाचित् धनिकेन धनदातॄणाम् आवली दृष्टा । तत्र कश्चन कृषिकः सहस्रं रूप्यकाणि दत्तानि आसन् । कृषिकस्य आर्थिकी स्थितिः शोचनीया चेदपि तेन सहस्रं रूप्यकाणि दत्तानि । मत्तः तस्य हृदयौदार्यम् अधिकम् । अतः तस्य नाम्नः एव टङ्कनं भवेत् देवालये इति अवदत् धनिकः । अन्ततः उभयोः नाम्नोः टङ्कनं भवेत् इति आयोजकाः निर्णीतवन्तः ।

    In a village, five men went house to house collecting money for the construction of a temple. It was decided that the name of the person who gave the largest donation would be inscribed on the temple. A millionaire donated one lakh rupees. Later, when he saw the list of donors, he noticed that a poor farmer had given one thousand rupees. Though the farmer’s financial condition was miserable, he had still contributed generously. The millionaire declared, “His heart is greater than mine; his name alone deserves to be inscribed.” Finally, the organizers decided to engrave both names on the temple.

  • असंमोहः

    अनया कथया वार्धक्ये कथं व्यवहरणीयम् इति ज्ञातुं शक्नुमः । पुत्राः प्रमादं कुर्युः इति भीतिः, मम अनुभवस्य उपयोगं कुर्युः इति अपेक्षा इत्यादयः वार्धक्ये सहजाः । तादृशीं मानसिकताम् अवहतः कस्यचन ज्येष्ठस्य जीवनं निश्चयेन अस्ति अनुकरणार्हम् । प्रायः असंमोहः नाम अयमेव ।

    This story teaches how one should conduct oneself in old age. Fear that sons may neglect them, or expectation that their experience will be valued—such feelings are natural in old age. Yet the life of one elder who overcame such attitudes is truly worthy of imitation. This clarity of mind is called asammohah (freedom from delusion).

  • सत्यनिष्ठा सुहृत्प्रीतिः च

    कदाचित् अन्यस्मिन् देशे कश्चन वणिक् लघुनः अपराधस्य निमित्तं कारागारे स्थापितः आसीत् । तस्य शूलारोपम् आदिष्टवान् राजा । सः वणिक् राज्ञे निवेदितवान् यत् गृहं गत्वा यद्यत् करणीयं स्यात् तत्सर्वं निर्वर्त्य वर्षाभ्यन्तरे प्रत्यागमिष्यामि इति । तस्य स्थाने तस्य मित्रं कारागारे स्थापितः आसीत् । वर्षम् अतीतम् । तस्य मित्रस्य शूलारोपस्य समयः आगतः । तावता धावन् तत्र आगतः सः वणिक् । बहुविधान् विघ्नान् अपाकृत्य मित्रस्य मरणदण्डनात् पूर्वम् आगतस्य वणिजः असाधारणीं सत्यनिष्ठां सुहृत्प्रीतिं च दृष्ट्वा राजा वणिजः दण्डनम् अपाकृतवान् ।

    In another land, a merchant was imprisoned for a minor offense. The king ordered him to be executed by impalement. The merchant pleaded to return home, settle his affairs, and come back within a year. In his place, his friend was kept in prison. A year passed, and the time for the friend’s execution arrived. Just then, the merchant rushed back, having overcome many obstacles, and reached before his friend’s punishment was carried out. Witnessing such extraordinary loyalty and truthfulness, the king canceled the merchant’s sentence.

  • विलक्षणः आसीर्वादः

    कश्चन महात्मा विलक्षणानि आशीर्वादवचनानि ददाति स्म । यथा राजानं 'सुभटो भव', आस्थानपण्डितम् 'अज्ञानी भव', महाधनिकं वणिक्प्रमुखं 'सेवकः भव' इति । किमर्थम् एवम् आशीर्वादं ददाति इति ज्ञातुं अनन्तरदिने राज्ञः वृद्धमन्त्री गत्वा महात्मानं राजास्थानम् आनयति । तदा महात्मा विलक्षणाशीर्वदवचनानाम् विशेषार्थं वदति । महात्मना कृतः आशीर्वादः विलक्षणः स्याद् चेदपि विशेषाभिप्रायगर्भः आसीत् इति जानन्तः सभास्थाः सर्वे तदीयां बुद्धिमत्तां विशेषतः‌ श्लाघितवन्तः ।

    A saint used to give unusual blessings: to a king he said, “Be a brave warrior,” to a court scholar, “Be ignorant,” and to a wealthy merchant, “Be a servant.” Curious about the meaning, the king’s aged minister brought the saint to the royal court the next day. There the saint explained the special intent behind each blessing. Though the words seemed strange, they carried deep significance. Realizing this, everyone in the court praised the saint’s wisdom.
