वसन्तः कश्चन विख्यातः मल्लः । कदाचित् सः गुरुणा बलभीमेन सह मल्लयुद्धं कृत्वा विजयं प्राप्तुम् इच्छति । यद्यपि तस्य वचनम् अकल्पितम् अनुचितं च आसीत् तथापि गुरुः तेन सह मल्लयुद्धं करोति । मल्लयुद्धे केनचित् कालेन एकां विलक्षणां चातुरीम् उपयुज्य बलभीमः वसन्तं पराजयति । क्रुद्धः वसन्तः 'या नूतना चातुरी विद्या प्रयुक्ता सा भवता न पाठिता एव' इति यदा वदति तदा गुरुः वदति 'सा चातुरी मया एतस्य दिनस्य कृते रक्षिता आसीत् तव गर्वभङ्गाय । गुरुः भवति वन्दनीयः । तं पराजेतुम् इच्छा कदापि न करणीया' इति ।

Vasant was a famous wrestler. Once, he wished to defeat his teacher Balabhima in a wrestling match. Though his words were improper, the teacher agreed to wrestle with him. During the contest, Balabhima used a special skill and defeated Vasant. Angered, Vasant said, “This new technique was never taught to me.” The teacher replied, “I kept this skill for today, to humble your pride. A teacher is to be revered; the desire to defeat him should never arise.”
इयं कथा आत्मविश्वासस्य उत्तमम् उदाहरणं भवितुम् अर्हति । यः परेषां साहाय्येन विना स्वकार्ये उद्यतः भवेत् सः एव सफलतां प्राप्नोति । यः आत्मस्थैर्येण स्वप्रयत्नेन कार्यतत्परः सन् अग्रे सरेत् सः विफलतां न प्राप्नोति कदाचिदपि । अस्यां कथायां कश्चन राजा सैनिकेषु अन्यतमस्य कस्यचन सैनिकस्य परीक्षां करोति । प्रथमं भीतिम् अनुभवति सः सैनिकः । अनन्तरं सः धैर्यं प्राप्य परीक्षायां सफलः भवति ।

This story is an excellent example of self-confidence. One who undertakes his work without relying on others alone attains success. He who, with inner steadiness and his own effort, remains devoted to his task, never meets with failure. In this story, a king tested one of his soldiers. At first the soldier felt fear, but later, gaining courage, he succeeded in the test.
कदाचित् स्वातन्त्र्यान्दोलने कस्यचन उच्चाधिकारिणः मृत्युः सञ्जातः । अनेन रुष्टे सर्वकारेण आन्दोलननेता निगृह्य न्यायालये उपस्थापितः । अयम् आसीत् क्रान्तिकारी ऊधमसिंहः । अस्मिन् सेनाधिकारिणः डायरस्य हननस्य आरोपः अवर्तत । काचित् युवत्याः प्रयासेन एव सः निगृहीतः आसीत् । ऊधमसिंहः जानाति स्म सा का इति । तथापि नार्याम् अस्त्रोत्थापनम् अस्माकं भारतीयसंस्कृतौ नास्ति इति ज्ञातवान् सः तस्यै युवत्यै कोपम् अकृत्वा तां न प्रहृतवान् ।

During the freedom movement, the death of a certain high officer occurred. Angered by this, the government arrested the movement’s leader and brought him to court. This was the revolutionary Udham Singh, accused of killing General Dyer. He was captured through the effort of a young woman. Udham Singh knew who she was, yet, understanding that in Indian culture weapons are never raised against women, he did not show anger toward her nor harm her.
कदाचित् ब्रह्मविदम् आचार्यम् उपसर्प्य कौचित् ब्रह्मचारिणौ ब्रह्मविद्याम् उपदेष्टुं प्रार्थितवन्तौ । तदा आचार्यः तयोः परीक्षां कृतवान् । तयोः एकः एव परीक्षाम् उत्तीर्णः सन् ब्रह्मविद्यालाभार्थम् अधिकारी जातः । ततः आचार्यः 'सर्वत्रापि सर्वस्मिन्नपि वस्तुनि भगवन्तं पश्येत् । कस्मिंश्चिपि असत्कर्मणि प्रवृत्तिं न दर्शयेत् । तदा एव भगवान् तव सम्मुखे तिष्ठेत् .....’ इत्यादिभिः वचनैः तं ब्रह्मचारिणं ब्रह्मविद्यालाभस्य उपायं बोधयति ।

Once, two students approached a spiritual teacher, requesting instruction in sacred knowledge. The teacher tested them, and only one passed the examination, becoming eligible to learn Brahmavidyā. The teacher then instructed him: “See the Divine in everything, in every object. Never engage in unrighteous deeds. Only then will the Lord truly stand before you…” With such words, the teacher revealed the path to attaining Brahmavidyā.
राजा विक्रमसिंहः कलापोषकः आसीत् । प्रजापालने राज्ञः अधिकावधानं नास्ति इति कारणतः दुःखितः मन्त्री महाराजः विवेकमार्गं प्रति अनेतव्यः इति दिवानिशम् अचिन्तयत् । सः कञ्चन उपायं कृत्वा महाराजं कृषिकक्षेत्रं प्रति अनयत् । 'एते कृषिकाः परोक्षरीत्या कलाकाराः एव । एतषां साहाय्यं करणीयम्' इति अवद्त् मन्त्री । ततः ग्रामेषु सर्वत्र जलाशयाः, कूपाः, तडागाः च निर्मिताः राज्ञा । सर्वे अपि जनाः सन्तुष्टाः सन्तः मन्त्रिणः चातुर्यं बुद्धिमत्तां च अश्लाघयन्त ।

King Vikramasinha was a patron of the arts. Because he paid little attention to the welfare of his people, the minister was troubled and constantly thought of guiding the king toward wisdom. By a clever plan, he took the king to the fields and said, “These farmers are, in a hidden way, artists too. They deserve support.” The king then had reservoirs, wells, and ponds built throughout the villages. All the people were pleased, and they praised the minister’s cleverness and wisdom.
कस्यचन परोपकारस्य साधकस्य अनुष्ठानक्रमं व्यवहारं च जनाः बहुधाः प्रशंसन्ति स्म । तस्य साधकस्य पार्श्वे सर्वदा जलपूर्णः कलशः, अग्निपूर्णा अङ्गारधानी च भवति स्म । तस्य कारणं यदा कश्चन भक्तः अपृच्छत् तदा साधकः अवदत् 'अहं मम कामनाः जले मज्जयितुम् इच्छामि । अहङ्कारश्च दग्धुम् इच्छामि । जलकलशस्य अग्नेः च दर्शनात् आत्मना करणीयस्य कार्यस्य स्मरणं भवति । दुर्गुणाः निवारणीयाः इत्येतत् कदापि विस्मृतं न भवेत्' इति ।

People greatly praised the conduct and practice of a certain devotee devoted to service. Beside him there was always a water-filled pot and a vessel of burning coals. When a follower asked the reason, the devotee replied: “I wish to drown my desires in water and burn my ego in fire. The sight of the water pot and the fire reminds me of the duties I must perform. One should never forget that vices must be removed.”
कदाचित् वेषान्तरं धृत्वा अटितवतः राज्ञः अश्वशकटस्य नेमिः चक्रात् पृथक् अभवत् । यदा लोहकारम् अन्विष्यन् गच्छति राजा तदा अद्य विरामदिनं, सहायकः नास्ति इति अवद्त् लोहकारः । अतः साहाय्यार्थं राजा एव भस्रिकादण्डचालनम् अङ्गीकृतवान् । जीवने ऐदम्प्राथम्येन श्रमः कृतः, श्रमस्य आनन्दः च ज्ञातः राज्ञा । श्रमस्य महत्त्वं बोधितवते लोहकाराय राजा गुरुदक्षिणारूपेण षट् सुवर्णनाणकानि दत्त्वा ततः निर्गतः ।

Once, while wandering in disguise, a king’s chariot wheel broke. Seeking a blacksmith, the king was told it was a holiday and no assistants were available. To help, the king himself worked the bellows. Through this, he personally experienced the value and joy of labor. Realizing its importance, the king rewarded the blacksmith with six gold coins as a teacher’s fee and departed.
काचित् मूषिका पत्या सह ग्रामे न्यवसत् । कश्चन धूर्तः बिडालः काननात् आगत्य तस्याः शिशून् भक्षयति स्म । अनेन दुःखिता मूषिका इदं गृहं परित्यज्य अन्यत्र गच्छामः इति पतिम् अवदत् । किन्तु सः मूषकः पत्नीं कष्टेन समाधाय एतस्याः समस्यायाः निवारणाय कमपि उपायं चिन्तयाम इति अवदत् । सः एकम् उपायं कृत्वा तस्य दुष्टबिडालस्य निग्रहम् अकरोत् । सर्वे मूषकाः प्रसन्नाः अभवन् ।

A certain mouse lived in a village with her husband. A cunning cat came from the forest and ate her children. Distressed, the mouse told her husband, “Let us leave this house and go elsewhere.” But the husband consoled her and said, “I will think of some way to solve this problem.” He devised a plan and subdued the wicked cat. All the mice became happy.
दम्भोद्भवः इति कश्चन राजा 'मत्सदृशः वीरः त्रिषु लोकेषु अपि नास्ति' इति भावयन् गर्वेण व्यवहरति स्म । कदाचित् कश्चन सज्जनः अवदत् 'गन्धमादनपर्वते उभौ तपोनिरतौ नरनारायणौ स्तः । तौ जेतुं कोऽपि न शक्नुयात्' इति । अथ कदाचित् गन्धमादनपर्वतम् अगच्छत् दम्भोद्भवः ताभ्यां सह युद्धं कर्तुम् । नरः कांश्चन दर्भान् अभिमन्त्र्य भूमौ अक्षिपत् । तदनन्तरक्षणे एव दम्भोद्भवस्य मुखं नासिका कर्णौ नेत्रे च दर्भाङ्कुरैः पूर्णानि । एतस्मात् भीतः दम्भोद्भावः नरं क्षमाम् अयाचत् । नरनारायणोः आशीर्वादं प्राप्य ततः प्रतिगतः दम्भोद्भवः अनन्तरकाले प्रजावत्सलः इति सत्कीर्तिं प्राप्तवान् ।

King Dambhodbhava, proud and boastful, believed that no warrior in the three worlds equaled him. A noble man told him: “On Mount Gandhamadana dwell the sages Nara and Narayana, whom none can defeat.” Dambhodbhava went there to challenge them. Nara, chanting mantras, cast blades of sacred grass upon the ground. Instantly, shoots sprouted and filled the king’s mouth, nose, ears, and eyes. Terrified, Dambhodbhava begged Nara for forgiveness. Receiving the blessings of Nara and Narayana, he returned, and in time became renowned as a compassionate ruler beloved by his people.
कदाचित् कश्चन वणिक् स्वस्य तरुणं पुत्रम् अहूय एकं मलिनं वस्त्रं दत्त्वा एकं रजतनाणकम् आनेतव्यम् इति अवदत् । पुत्रः तत् वस्त्रं स्वच्छतया प्रक्षाल्य महता श्रमेण विक्रीय रजतनाणकद्वयं प्राप्तवान् । एवं रीत्या पिता अनेकवारं पुत्राय मलिनवस्त्राणि दत्त्वा तानि विक्रेतुं रजतनाणकानि सुवर्णनाणकानि वा अनेतुम् अवदत् । पुत्रः अनेकान् उपायान् आश्रित्य तानि सर्वाणि विक्रीतवान् । एतस्मात् प्रयत्नेन सर्वमपि साधयितुं शक्यम् इति नीतिः पुत्रेण ज्ञाता ।

Once a merchant gave his young son a dirty cloth and asked him to sell it for one silver coin. The son cleaned it carefully, worked hard, and sold it for two coins. In the same way, the father repeatedly gave him dirty clothes, asking him to bring back silver or even gold coins. The son, using different methods, managed to sell them all successfully. From this, the son learned the lesson: with effort, anything can be accomplished.
