  • प्रीत्यादरपूर्णः व्यवहारः

    कश्चन युवकः पत्न्या सह विपणिं गत्वा सर्वदा एकस्याः वृद्धातः एव फलानि क्रीणाति स्म । तस्याः निर्धनतां ज्ञात्वा साहाय्यार्थं धनं‌ दातुं तेन यदा उद्यतं तदा तया विनयेन तत् निराकृतम् । तस्मात् तेन युवकेन कश्चन उपायः कृतः । तेन यः उपायः कृतः तम् उपायं ज्ञात्वा वृद्धा अन्यम् उपायं करोति । युवकेन कः उपायः कृतः ? वृद्धया कृतः उपायः कः ? इति कुतूहलेन इमां कथां शृण्वन्तु ।

    A young man, along with his wife, always bought fruits from an old woman in the market. Knowing her poverty, he once tried to give her money to help, but she politely refused. Therefore, the young man devised a certain method. Learning of his method, the old woman in turn adopted another method. What was the method devised by the young man?   • महामूर्खः कः‌?

    ध्यानचन्दः वणिक् चेदपि सः जिज्ञासुः भगवद्भक्तः च आसीत् । कदाचित् नगरस्य महाश्रेष्ठी लक्ष्मीपतिः तं गृहम् आहूय तस्य शिरसि एकं शिरस्त्रं निधाय अवदत् 'एतत् महामूर्खाय दातुं कारितम्' इति । ध्यानचन्दः प्रतिवचनं किमपि न अवदत् । अथ कदाचित् लक्ष्मीपतिः अस्वस्थः जातः । तदा ध्यानचन्दः आगत्य तत् शिरस्त्रं लक्ष्मीपतेः शिरसि स्थापयित्वा अवदत् 'परलोकं प्रति किमपि नेतुं न शक्यते इति जानता अपि भवता आजीवनं प्रभूतं धनं सम्पादितम् । किन्तु इदानीं न धनम् उपकरोति, न वा उपकुर्वन्ति बान्धवपुत्रपत्न्यादयः । अतः मत्तः अपि श्रेष्ठः मूर्खः भवान् एव' इति ।

    Dhyānachanda, though a merchant, was also a seeker and devotee of God. Once, the wealthy chief Lakshmipati called him home, placed a head-ornament on his head, and mocked: “This was made to be given to the greatest fool.” Dhyānachanda remained silent. Later, when Lakshmipati fell ill, Dhyānachanda came and placed the same ornament on his head, saying: “Though you know nothing can be carried to the next world, you spent your life amassing wealth. Now neither riches help you, nor do relatives or family. Therefore, you are a greater fool than I.”

  • ज्ञानम् अपारम्

    स्वगुरोः अपारस्य ज्ञानस्य प्रशंसां कुर्वते शिष्याय गुरुः एवं बोधयति 'अलं प्रशंसया । मया प्राप्तम् अल्पमेव । यथा सागरः अपारः तथैव ज्ञानराशिः अपि अपारः । वयं महता श्रमेण यत् अध्ययनं कुर्याम तत् तु तावदेव भवेत्, सागरे दण्डस्य मज्जनात् यावत् सङ्गृह्येत । यत् ज्ञानं प्राप्तं तत् अधिकम् इति तु भ्रमः एव । प्राप्तव्यमस्ति अपारम् । ज्ञानसागरस्य अपारतां मनसि निधाय प्राप्तस्य मापनं करणीयम् अस्माभिः, न तु स्वयोग्यतां सामर्थ्यं वा मनसि निधाय' इति ।

    When a disciple praised his Guru’s vast knowledge, the Guru explained: “Enough of praise. What I have gained is little. Just as the ocean is boundless, so too is the treasure of knowledge. Whatever we study with great effort is only as much as a stick dipped into the sea can gather. To think that what we know is great is mere illusion. Much more remains to be attained. We must measure our learning against the infinity of knowledge, not against our own ability or worth.”

  • पुत्रात् ख्याता इतरा

    मण्डूकमुनि-इतरयोः पुत्रः महीदासः सर्वदा द्वादशाक्षरमन्त्रं जपन् लौकिककर्मसु अनासक्तिं वहति स्म । अतः महीदासे इतरायां च मुनेः अनादरः प्रवृद्धः । खिन्ना इतरा पुत्रेण सह अन्यत्र वासम् आरब्धवती । कदाचित् जपेन सन्तुष्टः विष्णुः महीदासस्य स्वप्नम् आगत्य 'गुरूपदेशं विना एव सकलवेदवेदाङ्गज्ञानं तव भविष्यति' इति अवत् । तथैव ज्ञानं सम्पाद्य ऋग्वेदभाष्यं कर्मकाण्डबोधकं ब्राह्मणग्रन्थं च सः अरचयत् । 'मम माता पत्युः उपेक्षाम् अनुभवन्ती, प्रतिकूलस्थितौ अपि मह्यं सत्संस्कारदाने बद्धादरा आसीत् । अतः इतः परं मया रचितः ब्राह्मणग्रन्थः ऐतरेयब्राह्मणत्वेन निर्दिष्टः भवतु' इति अवदत् महीदासः ।

    Mahidasa, son of Mandukamuni and Itara, constantly recited the twelve syllable mantra and remained detached from worldly duties. Because of this, his father neglected him, and his mother, distressed, went to live elsewhere with her son. One day, Lord Vishnu, pleased with Mahidasa’s devotion, appeared in his dream and blessed him: “Without a teacher’s instruction, you shall gain complete knowledge of the Vedas and Vedangas.” Indeed, Mahidasa attained such wisdom and composed a commentary on the Rigveda and a Brahmana text explaining ritual practices. He named it as ‘Aitareya Brahmana’ after his mother Itara, honoring her steadfast values despite hardship.

  • सदाचारस्य अनुष्ठानम्

    पूर्वं वारणास्यां स्थितस्य बनारसहिन्दुविश्वविद्यालयस्य कुलपतिः आसीत् आचार्य: नरेन्द्रदेवः । अस्वस्थं बन्धुं द्रष्टुं कदाचित् सः सैकल्-रिक्षायानेन गच्छन् आसीत् । तं दृष्ट्वा कश्चन सुहृद् पृच्छति यत् सर्वकारस्य कार्-यानेन गन्तुम् अर्हति खलु इति । तदा आचार्यः वदति 'उन्नतस्थाने तिष्ठता मया आचारशुद्धिः परिरक्षणीया । यदि मादृशानाम् आचारे एव शुद्धिः न भवेत् तर्हि समाजे सदाचारः कथं तिष्ठेत्? अतः मया वैयक्तिककार्याय सर्वकारीयव्यवस्थायाः उपयोगः न क्रियते' इति ।

    Acharya Narendra Dev, once the Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University, went by cycle-rickshaw to visit an ailing relative. A friend asked why he did not use the government car available to him. Narendra Dev replied: “In a high position, I must preserve purity of conduct. If people like me do not maintain integrity in personal behavior, how can society uphold morality? Therefore, I do not use government facilities for private purposes.”

  • यत् यदा, तत् तदैव

    इयं कथा राजचोरयोः विषये अस्ति। चौर्यार्थम् आगतः चोरः राज्ञः प्राणरक्षणं करोति । तदर्थं राजा तस्मै दश सुवर्णनाणकानि उपायनत्वेन दत्त्वा प्रेषयति । अपि च चौर्यार्थं दश रजतनाणकानि दण्डत्वेन दातव्यम् इति दण्डयति च । कोषाधिकारी कुतूहलत्वेन चोरम् अपृच्छत् 'चौर्यार्थम् आगतेन त्वया चौर्यप्रवृत्तिं परित्यज्य राज्ञः प्राणरक्षणाय किमर्थम् उद्यतम्?’ इति । तदा चोरः 'परेषां प्राणरक्षणाय प्रयासः मानवमात्रस्य आद्यं कर्तव्यम् । तदेव मया कृतम् इति'  अवदत् । यत् यदा करणीयं तत् तदैव करणीयम् इति अचिन्तयत् कोषाधिकारी ।

    This story concerns a king and a thief. A thief came intending to steal, but instead saved the king’s life. In gratitude, the king sent him ten gold coins as a gift, yet also fined him ten silver coins for coming with the intent to steal. Curious, the treasurer asked the thief: “Why did you abandon theft and choose to save the king’s life?” The thief replied: “To protect another’s life is the foremost duty of every human being. That is what I did.” The treasurer reflected: “What must be done should be done at the right time.”

  • विग्रहः तु मदीयः

    पूर्वं कश्चन कृष्णभक्तः आसीत् । सः सदा भगवतः ध्याने पूजायां च निरतः‌ भवति स्म । तस्य भक्त्या सुप्रीतः श्रीकृष्णः कदाचित् तस्य पुरतः प्रत्यक्षः अभवत् । तं दृष्ट्वा भक्तः नितरां सन्तुष्टः जातः । आनन्दाश्रूणि स्रावयन् साष्टाङ्गं नमस्कृतवान् । ततः श्रीकृष्णः तं परीक्षते । भक्तः परीक्षायां सफलः भवति । अन्ते भक्तम् आशिषा अनुगृह्य ततः अन्तर्हितः भवति भगवान् ।

    Once there was a devotee of Krishna who spent his time in constant meditation and worship. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Krishna appeared before him. Overjoyed, the devotee shed tears of bliss and bowed in full reverence. Krishna then tested him, and the devotee proved successful. In the end, the Lord blessed him and disappeared.

  • दिग्भ्यः नमस्कारार्पणम्

    आश्रमे गुरुः प्रतिदिनं प्रातः अष्टसु दिक्षु नमस्कारं करोति स्म । तत् दृष्ट्वा कश्चन शिष्यः अष्टानां दिशानां नमस्कारस्य उद्देशम् अपृच्छत् । तदा सः सर्वाः दिशः किं किं तत्त्वं सङ्केतयन्ति इति वदति । दिग्भ्यः नमस्कारार्पणम् एवं विशिष्टेन उद्देशेन भवति इति ज्ञात्वा इतः परम् अहमपि दिशः नमस्करिष्यामि इति अवदत् शिष्यः ।

    In the ashram, the Guru offered salutations every morning to the eight directions. Seeing this, a disciple asked the purpose of bowing to all directions. The Guru explained that each direction symbolizes certain principles, and salutation to them is done with a special intent. Understanding this, the disciple said: “From now on, I too will bow to the directions.”

  • ज्ञानप्रकाशस्य उद्दीपनम्

    कश्चन शिष्यः आचार्यम् अपृच्छत् यत् ज्ञानात् केवलं वृत्तिप्राप्तिः, मानसम्मानप्राप्तिः च एव प्रयोजनं वा? इति । तदा आचार्यः केनचित् निर्दर्शनेन शिष्यं बोधयति 'अज्ञानस्य कारणतः अस्मासु अनेकविधाः भ्रान्तयः जायन्ते । तासां निवारणाय अन्तरङ्गदीपः उद्दीपनीयः । सर्वे अन्तरङ्गोद्दीपनं कर्तुं न अर्हन्ति । भ्रमजालस्य अपसारणाय आत्मप्रकाशस्य प्राप्त्यै च निरन्तरगभीराध्ययनम् एव शरणम्' इति ।

    A disciple once asked his teacher whether knowledge is meant only for livelihood and honor. The teacher explained with an example: “Because of ignorance, many delusions arise within us. To remove them, the inner lamp must be kindled. Not everyone can awaken this inner light. For clearing the web of illusions and attaining self-illumination, continuous deep study alone is the true path.”

  • सत्कार्याणि कानि ?

    'फलप्राप्तीच्छां विना यानि उत्तमानि कार्याणि क्रियेरन् तानि एव सत्कार्याणि भवेयुः । यत् क्रियेत तत् निःस्वार्थभावनया कर्तव्यम् । जनानाम् उपकारः यतः स्यात् तादृशानि कार्याणि करणीयानि । येभ्यः कार्येभ्यः मनसः आत्मनः च संस्कारः‌ भवेत् तानि एव उत्तमकार्याणि । प्रशंसाप्राप्तीच्छा विकृतिरूपा एव । अतः तादृशीम् इच्छां परित्यज्य शुद्धेन हृदयेन प्रजाहितकार्याणि कुरु' इति कश्चन संन्यासी कञ्चन राजानं बोधयति अस्यां कथायाम् । ततः ज्ञानोदयं प्राप्तः राजा सत्कार्यसङ्कल्पं कृत्वा तं संन्यासिनं भक्त्या नमस्कृतवान् ।

    A saint advised a king: “Good deeds are those done without desire for reward. Act with selflessness, aiming at the welfare of people. The best actions are those that refine both mind and character. Seeking praise is a distortion—abandon it and work with a pure heart for the good of all.” Hearing this, the king gained insight, resolved to perform noble deeds, and bowed to the saint with devotion.
