Choosing among the 8 "major"candidates in the New York mayoral race might be depressing, but here's some good news: Ranked Choice Voting means you can include some lesser known candidates on your ballot -- candidates that actually reflect your values. In advance of election day, which is on Tuesday June 22nd, Brie spoke to two progressive candidates. First, she spoke to Art Chang -- a Bernie-voting son of Korean immigrants who grew up in Jim Crow Atlanta. He's running on universal childcare, revitalizing the arts, and automating social safety-net benefits. Brie asks him about his private/public background, and why those lefties who have been burned by Andrew Yang's corporate pivot shouldn't be wary of his corporate roots. Next, she spoke to rapper and community organizer Paperboy Love Prince, who received more votes from New York City residents than almost anyone in the race when they ran for congress against a 26 year incumbent last year, winning 20% of the vote. (They also won more votes than AOC in her congressional primary). Come for rap lyrics about Eric Adams, stay for the substantive analysis of what working class New Yorkers are going through, and what Paper plans to do to help.

  • Episode 81 - Listen, Lab Leak (w/ Thomas Frank)

Last time Brie and Virgil spoke to Thomas Frank the 1/6 riots were ongoing in the background. Now, time has offered some perspective on whether that was truly a "populist" moment, the future of both left and right populism in this country, and what history tells us about how to "push Biden left" as so many liberals promised to do. We also dig into Frank's enormously popular Guardian article on the lab leak theory and what it it reveals about our media that it only now considered "acceptable" discourse. Also, Brie makes Frank listen to some Pod Save America and asks him to weigh in on Obama's seeming ignorance of his own populist charm.

Briahna confronts her former boss and DC bureau chief at The Intercept Ryan Grim over the bad blood which emerged over Force The Vote. In the most productive FTV conversation to date, they address accusations of journalism, bad faith arguments from House progressives that went unchallenged in interviews at The Internet, and the strategic merits of leveraging narrow congressional majorities to fight for concrete demands that advance working class interests. Hatchets were buried, but not before digging up bones.

  • Episode 79 - Rocket to Russia

This week, we brought two titans of Russiagate together for a tete-a-tete for the ages. On one side, Matt Taibbi, who has been wanting against the excesses of Russia hysteria long before Rachel Maddow made her first 10 million off the subject. On the other, Michael Isikoff, Chief Investigative Correspondent for Yahoo News, who very graciously has reconsidered some of his past views, and was open to discussing lessons learned and other fault lines defining the left/center-left perspectives on contemporary politics. This is a barn burner. (Is this cancel court?)

Finally, the main stream media seems to have caught up with what we've been saying all along: Biden isn't trying to do squat. We talk infrastructure bill, the latest parliamentarian mishigas, and where progressive priorities currently stand. We also bookend this episode with a conversation about Obama's latest interview with Ezra Klein, whether push back from mainstream media liberals like Jason Johnson over Biden's Tulsa remarks means Biden is at a tipping point with Black voters, and whether liberals actually stand for anything. It's a great panel with comedian and co-host of Reply Guys Julia Claire, Contributing Editor at The Nation Doug Henwood, and friend of the show and host of Champagne Sharks Trevor Beaulieu.

  • Episode 77 - The 42nd Street Why?

Wondering what's been going on with the NY mayoral race? We've got you covered. Three weeks out from election day, the presumptive left candidate, Dianne Morales, has been derailed by allegations that she was mistreating Black and Brown staffers, underpaying them, and denying them healthcare coverage. The left candidate with the best shot of winning, Scott Stringer, went down under the weight of a sexual assault allegation weeks ago. Now, the left is scrambling for a replacement -- someone who can defeat the cop, the Obama guy, the Black entrepreneur, and the Asian entrepreneur. Should the left go all in with the charter school loving Latina sanitation pro claiming tons of expertise but no progressive bona fides? Or should it opt for the Warrenesque civil rights attorney cum MSNBC pundit with the impressive resume whose favorite credential is "mom"? Is it too late to rehabilitate Stringer now that the #metoo allegation has been vetted with little there there? Is Yang really that bad? We review debate footage & the Morales allegations in detail and let you know where we land.

This week, we spoke to Palestinian American activist Linda Sarsour and Professor Marc Lamont Hill, author of Progressive Except for Palestine, about what’s currently happening in the region, Biden’s response to the conflict, and the political potential of Black/Palestinian solidarity. Why are so many neoliberal politicos eager to undermine longstanding affinities between stateside Black liberation movements and Palestinians here and abroad? And how can activists and movement participants ensure that the shifting Overton window doesn’t swing back to the “progressive except for Palestine” status quo?

Later in the episode, we speak to Sarsour one-on-one about why BLM leadership chose not to leverage last summer’s protests (and the votes of protestors) in exchange for concrete demands from the Biden administration. Will “vote blue no matter who” be the go-to strategy in 2024? Or will organizers finally draw a line in the sand?

  • Episode 75 - Wild Wild (w/ Dr. Cornel West)

We speak to the one-and-only Dr. Cornel West about the professional consequences of his advocacy Palestine, his tenure battle with Harvard, and what he makes of the gap between the media response to his case versus Nikole Hannah-Jones's tenure battle. How does the silence or complicity of the Black media elite obstruct progress by manufacturing consent for neoliberalism? And how does a flat, racially essentialist understanding who the "good guy" is make progressive advocacy more difficult, from BLM to Gaza? But first, Brie and Virgil discuss what Biden should have accomplished by George Floyd's anniversary using executive orders, the waning sympathy for Palestine, and what the two have in common.

  • Episode 73 - Texaco's Oil

We talk to environmental lawyer Steven Donziger, actress and humanitarian Susan Sarandon, and 2020 presidential candidate and author Marianne Williamson about the fraud case Chevron pursued against Donziger after he won an historic $9.5 billion judgment against the oil giant. Chevron was found liable for polluting an indigenous community in Ecuador, resulting in an epidemic of birth defects and cancer. Donziger has been under house arrest for over 600 days, and is currently waiting for the results of a bench trial (that means no jury) that's being prosecuted not by the state, but by a law firm with financial ties to Chevron. In a departure from the American norm, the courtroom has been closed to cameras, but Sarandon and Williamson, who both attended the trial, joined us to give us a first hand account of what happened in the court room. Afterward, they engaged us in a broader conversation about the trajectory of their left activism, their disappointment with elected progressives who fail to use their leverage to extract concessions, and the professional and personal toll they've paid for standing for principle. Learn more about Donziger's case at http://freedonziger.org/

But first, Virgil delivers some news:

After over four years as a co-host, co-producer, and collaborator, I am departing Chapo Trap House in order to pursue other creative projects.

Our partnership together has been nothing short of an immense political and artistic accomplishment. And though it is the right time for me to explore new directions, I will always be grateful for having had the opportunity to be a part of Chapo, and I will always treasure the memories of our collaboration, our friendship, our listeners, and the tremendous success we enjoyed together. This separation is mutual and amicable, and I wish Will, Felix, Matt, Amber, and Chris the absolute best in continuing to build Chapo into an even greater success and in all future projects.
