Part one of our interview with former intelligence analyst and whistleblower Chelsea Manning about her decision to disclose classified documents to Wikileaks, how her time in jail prepared her for COVID isolation, why she thinks Obama commuted her sentence, the root cause of 1/6 and America's political legitimacy crisis, her social media coping strategy, and much much more. Tune in next week for Part 2, including Chelsea's thoughts on the recent Israeli attacks on Gaza and more.

Tired of defeatist, nihilistic conversations about climate change? Same. That's why this week, we invited climate writer Kate Aronoff to talk brass tacks about where the Biden administration falls short, the new bipartisan face of climate denial, and how social movements may have the power to do what captured legislators won't. Kate walks us through the structural impediments to enacting climate regulation that really works, and she explains how our legal and regulatory system has been rigged to make sure we keep paying for the harms from which corporate polluters profit. We can't capitalism our way out of this one. Kate explains why.
Also in this episode: Brie tries to make Virgil sad with maudlin southeast Asian commercials, Andrew Yang comments on Israel, and the gang talks about going to Japan..

This week, we do a deep dive into NYC politics with some real New Yoykas: State Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani, tenant organizer Cea Weaver, & journalist Ross Barkan. We discuss socialist solutions to NY's dysfunctional housing policy, whether Dianne Morales is the real deal for leftists, the #metoo allegations against Scott Stringer, the fair and the specious critiques of frontrunner Andrew Yang, how Cuomo's bevy of scandals is affecting the legislation coming out of Albany, and why the rent is still too damn high. Big 212 energy energy here folks. [Brie obviously wrote this copy. Don't judge Virgil for the New Yoykas thing. He's better than that.]

As president of Demos, Heather McGhee oversaw some of the best research we have on what message *actually* works to flip voters to the left. She joins us this week to talk about how the race/class "divide" is misunderstood, the new Yale study claiming that talking about race makes progressive policies less appealing, and what messaging is most effective on persuadable voters. Stay until the end of the episode, where Virgil and I reflect on whether Elizabeth Warren lost because of her gender, why Obama was able to win while Black, and the political weaponization of the word "racist" -- a prescient conversation recorded before Tim Scott's response to Biden's Congressional Address sparked an ongoing debate about whether America is, in fact, racist.

We talk to organizer, author, and one of the most important labor voices on the left Jane McAlevey. She explains why there's no substitute for the power to withhold labor, why more organizing must precede calls for general strikes, and why celebrating Manchin's PRO Act cosponsorship may be a strategic mistake if not tied to calls for filibuster reform.

We chat with Natalie Wynn, better known as ContraPoints, whose videos explore gender, ethics, race, politics, and social criticism. Tempered in the fires of YouTube, she's famous for flipping alt-right youths to the left with her opulent sets and smart, well-researched, witty videos. But we were happy to grab her for an intimate conversation about what it's like to be the subject of an internet pile-on, how penance should replace cancellation, the oppression Olympics, and how to perk up Virgil's Zoom set up.

This week the gang checks in on whatever the hell is going on in Congress with returning guest David Dayen, executive editor of American Prospect, and new guest Jennifer Briney, host of the Congressional Dish podcast, who breaks the pundit mold by actually trying to read all the bills. (Really. All of them.) We cover topics ranging from the infrastructure bill to Save Our Stages, the bloated military budget to the PRO Act, WTO to FTV. We assess recent media claims that Biden has exceeded the expectations of progressives, and Virgil finds his comb. It's a good one.

We're joined by Dr. Eddie Glaude Jr., Princeton professor & author of Begin Again: James Baldwin's America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own, and Democracy in Black: How Race Still Enslaves the American Soul, for one of the most productive, good faith conversations ever on the subject of race vs. economic anxiety, how to talk about racism to racists, and how race reductionists derail universalist policies with bad faith arguments.

In a week marked by multiple instances of police misconduct, and under the shadow of the ongoing Derick Chauvin trial, Virgil and Brie sit down with two former public defenders to discuss why "reform" isn't good enough. Lara Bazelon is a law professor and the former director of the Loyola Law School Project for the Innocent in Los Angeles. She's also the author of the viral 2019 NYT article "Kamala Harris Was Not a Progressive Prosecutor." Scott Hechinger, formerly of the Brooklyn public defenders office, is the founder of Zealous, an advocacy organization aimed at leveraging the power of public defenders to end mass incarceration.
Before the interview, Brie and Virgil set themselves up for canceling as bourgeois elites by debating their favorite brunch-spot vibes, and post interview, the pair ruminates on how "copaganda" has created undue public sympathy for prosecutors.
