Drama. The last few weeks in the anime and manga world have seen nothing but drama. More unfolding in the David Wald departure from Crunchyroll and the lack of updates from either sides. More schools are banning manga for ridiculous and, somewhat, racial reasons. Sony is planning to expand their ever-growing empire more with the potential acquisition of Kadokawa. Like I said, DRAMA! And in case you missed it all you have Frankfurtter and MagicallyAverage here to bring you up to speed!

This last weekend the Baka&Company group had the absolute pleasure of presenting multiple panels at Michigan's largest anime convention, Youmacon! Alongside our podcasting friends at Girls, Gays, Animes, we were lucky enough to present on four different panels throughout the weekend. We'll recap our experiences as panelists, the lessons we learned along the way, and our overall feelings on Youmacon as a whole!

If you're a fan of anime you always try to find ways to show off your favorite series however you can. Buying merch at cons, getting exclusive apparel, or maybe just a figure of your favorite character. Many fans also love showing their appreciate for anime by connecting with the voices behind their favorite characters. Sending simple messages or giant care packages is a way of expressing gratitude towards those who create the characters we know and love through their unique voices. But then you get a company like, oh, I don't know, Cruchyroll, who just goes ahead and opens this mail for no reason... Like, why??? This is exactly what voice actor David Wald has accused Crunchyroll of doing for years and years now. Frankfurtter and MagicallyAverage break down the accusations that broke over the weekend and talk about the harm this has done to fans and voice actors over the years.

Each season of anime comes with its highs and its lows. Whether its new anime or a returning series, anime fans are blessed with a wide array of shows to start watching. But is there a season of anime that can surpass them all? Is it possible for a single season to contain some of the best series, new and old? It seems improbable since so many anime are released every few months, but this Fall season aims to reign atop the rest as the Greatest Season of All Time! Spectacular new anime, long-awaited returning series, and some enjoyable reboots and remakes make the Fall 2024 season of anime easily the best of this year and, one could argue, of all time. Do you agree?

Nothing hurts the heart of an anime fan more than a sudden and drastic change to their beloved show. Whether its the voice actors, the soundtrack, or just the quality of the show, supporters will quickly take note of the errors they uncover in their show. However, the one thing that stings the most for any avid anime watcher is a drop in animation quality. Whether its season to season or episode to episode, a drop in animation quality is an immediate red flag for any passionate fan of an anime. And with how competitive the anime market is in keeping the attention of viewers, its always such a shock when these mistakes take place! So, why does it keep happening? Insufficient funding? Lack of workers? Or just laziness on the part of the studio?? Frankfurtter and MagicallyAverage break down some recent anime that have experienced this fatal flaw and theorize what could be happening behind closed doors to allow for this to take place.

What defines a villain in anime? Is it their cruel nature? Their seething hatred towards all good things? Well, however you define it, I'd say the biggest villain is Yami Yugi. End of story. Throw the book at him. Lock him away. Done. How can a show about a trading card game, which has set rules and restrictions, be FULL of blatant, unapologetic cheating?!? Like, I understand the game is complex and people make mistakes, but...like, this dude just makes up stuff on the fly! WHY HASN'T HE BEEN STOPPED!?! Well, the Frankfurtter, MagicallyAverage, and our special guest, BitKingDT, explore the Yu-Gi-Oh archives to find the most iconic moments in the shows history where Yugi cheats. Spoiler alert: there are a lot of moments...

Trading cards games.. What was once controlled by nerds and sweaty men, the universe of TCGs has expanded immensely over the last 5 years and evolved into something no one could have possibly predicted. Where once Magic the Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokémon dominated alone, the TCG market has exploded with a plethora of new options, many of them using anime for the base of their game! Some of these new TCGs were created from existing anime IP, like One Piece and Dragon Ball Z. Others simply use anime to develop new cards for their game, like Weiss Schwarz and Universus. And some simply try to add flair to their cards and attract a new audience to their game, like Magic the Gathering. No matter how you look at it, anime has become a major influence on TCGs today to the point where anime fans and trading card collectors are coming together to form one beautiful, smelly community of nerds. Truly a sight to be seen.
