The Bay Area is facing an extended clean up operation after yesterday's powerful atmospheric river. San Francisco supervisors have expressed support for an ambitious reparations plan that would include - among other things - a five Million dollar lump-sum payment for each eligible Black person who lives in the city.  

Two students were arrested for having knives on two different high school campuses in Santa Rosa. KCBS Radio's Mike DeWald reports, Sonoma County schools remain on high alert weeks after a deadly stabbing on a campus.

This afternoon's high winds blew out windows in one of San Francisco's high-rise buildings this afternoon, and there have also been widespread power outages. Since the flooding and subsequent evacuations began in Monterey County, the local SPCA has been taking in an array of animals either surrendered by their owners or found astray in several communities. Several dogs are coming to a Bay Area animal shelter, where they will be placed for adoption. The windstorm that has followed last night's rainstorm is causing delays at airports.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed is working on making it easier to get permits to build more housing in the city. The Environmental Protection Agency is proposing the first federal limits on harmful “forever chemicals” in drinking water. California has been a leader on this issue, but the proposed limits are stricter than California's regulations. How safe are backseat passengers in a midsize suv? New data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has the details. It's a win for Uber and Lyft and a set-back for labor unions in California. The courts have ruled that ride hailing companies can continue to classify their drivers as independent contractors without benefits.

Today is Equal Pay Day, the day set aside to illustrate the pay gap between men and women and California's First Partner is commemorating the day. Don't be surprised if your 401K plan took a hit following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank.  Portfolios that feature bank stocks were punished on Wall Street after the failure.  Brace yourselves, it may not be over yet. 

A high wind warning in effect for the entire Bay Area as heavy rains pummel the region. KCBS Radio's Jeffrey Schaub reports from Central Marin where he says there are plenty of downed branches and localized flooding.

Meanwhile, officials in Monterey county are working around the clock trying to temporarily fix the levee breach at the Pajaro river.

KCBS Radio's Kris Ankarlo has more on what to expect out of this storm. Crews are continuing to work to stabilize a levee on the Pajaro River which failed late Friday. Monterey County officials and a number of non-profits are scrambling to organize donations for the thousands of people evacuated due to the Pajaro river levee breaching. Several dozen Silicon Valley Bank customers have been standing in line outside the main branch in Santa Clara this morning, waiting to cash out their accounts.

Today, the Biden administration granted approval for a major oil project on federal land, providing a victory for the Alaskan industry and its supporters in Congress. This decision was made despite objections that the development could impede global efforts to transition away from fossil fuels. Following the largest banking collapse since the Great Recession, there’s growing fear that the fallout could be widespread.

KCBS Radio's Bob Butler reports water officials say they have to make room for rain from these current storms. 

Public safety is one of the biggest concerns right now among San Franciscans and the city's Mayor is putting that at the top of her priorities with a 27 million dollar budget proposal to fund police overtime and bring in more community ambassadors. The public safety budget supplemental is set to be weighed by the Board of Supervisors next week. It comes as the police union tentatively agrees to a new contract that would give officers a raise of nearly 11 percent during the next three years.
