  • 665. Pretty Piano: a children’s story and guided relaxation
Ruby June takes a piano lesson with Miss Bonnie but learns she can't learn how to play perfectly in just one day.

    Narrator: Male

    Story Begins: 4:53
    Pretty Piano Excerpt:

It was a breezy day on Ahway Island. The trees swayed in the wind, the rustling of their leaves a comforting sound to the friendly birds, bugs, squirrels, and other residents of Ruby June Guerdy’s neighborhood. Ruby June watched the movement of the trees in the wind as she road down the street on the school bus.

Today was an important, special day. Her mom’s good friend Miss Bonnie was going to teach Ruby June how to play the piano. Ruby June always liked to listen to Miss Bonnie and her mom play piano together and now she wanted to learn, too. The little girl was almost bouncing in her seat on the bus, she was so excited for her first lesson in learning to play such a beautiful instrument.

Waiting for Ruby June at the bus stop, Miss Bonnie was wearing a pretty blue blouse that, in Ruby June’s opinion, made her brown skin look extra beautiful. Miss Bonnie and Ruby June’s mom, Ms. Guerdy, both taught at the Ahway Island School, but Miss Bonnie taught the older kids and was finished with school at a different time than Ms. Guerdy

As Ella helps her family get ready for a party, she feels a little lonely. Maybe she'll meet a new friend at the party!
Hello everyone!  We hope you enjoyed our new story this week. Now, welcome to Favorite Friday! Sometimes we like to listen to our favorites again. Please enjoy “Ella's New Friend” and we’ll be back with a new story on Monday!
    Narrator: Female

    Story Begins: 11:16

    Ella's New Friend Excerpt:
The little girl peeked outside the window at the blue sky, fluffy white clouds, and bright sun.  She sighed.  Ella knew what would happen next.  Her family was having a party today, and her dad needed help getting ready for the guests.  Ella had been busy cleaning all day, while her stepbrother, Tom and her stepsister Tracy had organized the same toy box over and over.  Ella suspected they were just playing. Tom and Tracy had a habit of saying they would help and then just working on one thing until Ella had cleaned everything else.

Ella looked over at Tracy and Tom thoroughly organizing the toy box. They certainly were having fun.  Ella wished she had someone to play with like that.  She just didn’t fit in with Tracy and Tom. They liked different things than she did.  Ella’s dad called, “Ella can you help me.” And she hopped off of the sofa.  Her break was over.  “Coming dad!” She said.

  • 663 Big Delivery: a calming, original children’s story
Connor Crane works with Gabby Delivery Truck to move some big crates when they see a new construction site on the island. They come up with ideas of what could be built next on Ahway Island.

    Narrator: Female

    Story Begins: 4:23
    Big Delivery Excerpt:

It was a bright, sunny day on Ahway Island. Fluffy little clouds floated gently across the clear blue sky like leaves floating down a lazy river. The sandy beach sparkled in the sunlight as Connor Crane and his driver rolled along the beach road toward the Ahway Island Harbor. Today, they were headed toward the harbor docks to meet up with Gabby Delivery Truck and her driver. Connor was excited: he wasn’t often needed down at the harbor, and he’d never worked with Gabby before. And, today’s activities would be unusual, from what Connor had overheard at the Ahway Island Construction Company headquarters this morning. They were all going to work together to move some crates off a boat and onto Gabby’s cargo bed so that she could deliver them to a business in downtown Ahway Island.

As Connor rumbled toward the docks, the crane enjoyed the lovely weather. He breathed in the fresh sea air, and listened to all the lively seagulls playing in the sky. When he stopped at a stop sign briefly, one cheery seagull landed on his retracted boom for a moment to say hello! Even the waves were happy, Connor thought, as he heard the waves swish back and forth around the docks. What a beautiful afternoon!

Owen has set up a superhero training course for his friend Allie. Will they make it all the way through before lunch?
Hello everyone!  We hope you enjoyed our new story this week. Now, welcome to Favorite Friday! Sometimes we like to listen to our favorites again. Please enjoy “Superhero Time” and we’ll be back with a new story on Monday!

    Superhero Time Excerpt:
Sunshine spilled through the window blinds brightening up Owen’s bedroom.  Owen stretched, then quickly hopped out of bed and got dressed.  Today Allie was coming over!  Knowing how much Allie liked comic books, Owen had planned a superhero day. He could hardly wait to get started.

Luckily, Owen didn’t have to wait too long.  He had just finished breakfast when there was a ring from the doorbell. Owen opened the door. There stood Allie with a broad smile on her face. “Hi Owen!” she exclaimed, skipping right into the house.

“Are you ready?” Owen asked with a mischievous grin.

“What do you have planned?” Allie asked as she returned the smile.

“Follow me! I want to see if you can guess.”

Allie followed Owen into the family room. It was divided up into sections, with a different activity in each.  The room looked like a training area for someone.

  • 660. Eddie’s New Shoes: a calming bedtime story for children
Eddie gets new shoes (and new confidence) for his birthday!

    Narrator: Female

    Story Begins: 4:30
    Eddie's New Shoes Excerpt:

It was a cloudy day on Ahway Island. The clouds were rolling through the sky like fluffy race cars on a racetrack in the sky. As Eddie De Souza sat in the school bus on his way home from school,he watched the clouds speed by.
Today was a special day for Eddie. It was his first day being ten years old, although he had already celebrated his birthday over the weekend. His parents and his little brother Luis had gone to a favorite restaurant and played mini golf. Then last night, the family had baked and enjoyed a cake together. So, Eddie didn’t mind that today, his actual birthday, was just an ordinary day, since he’d had such a nice birthday weekend.
The yellow bus dropped Eddie right in front of his house. Eddie went up to the garage and typed in the secret code that opened the front door. He hurried into the house.
“Hi, Mom!” Eddie called out. He heard his mom answer from the kitchen, so he headed there first. His mom was sitting at the kitchen table with a wrapped present on the table in front of her. Eddie ran up to her, giving her a big hug. He looked at the blue and white-wrapped gift on the table. He felt excited but a little confused. After all, his birthday had been yesterday.

Daisy Beagle catches a new scent on the breeze and follows it into the Ahway Island Forest. What will the curious dog find?
Hello everyone!  We hope you enjoyed our new story this week. Now, welcome to Favorite Friday! Sometimes we like to listen to our favorites again. Please enjoy “Forest Discovery” and we’ll be back with a new story on Monday!
    Narrator: Female

    Story Begins: 11:50

    Forest Discovery Excerpt:
A cheerful melody danced into the house through the open window.  Daisy smiled as the bird’s song gently woke her.  The little beagle stretched.  The bird’s song told her it was time to get up.  Daisy sniffed the air to see if breakfast was ready.  Sniff, sniff, it was!  The little dog hurried over to her dish and barked a thank you for the delicious food. Daisy ate every last crumb of her breakfast and licked the bowl clean.  A warm summer breeze blew into the house and tickled the little beagle’s nose.  Sniff, sniff.  What was that? Daisy needed a better sniff, so the little dog took a deep dragon breath in and out to catch as much of the scent as she could.  It was a refreshing smell, a little bit sweet, but a distance away. Daisy felt curious.  If she could get closer, she might find out what the smell was.  The little dog decided today was a great day for an adventure.  She zipped over to the door and nudged it with her nose. Sometimes she could slip outside without her person knowing.  Just like the little beagle had hoped, the door popped open, and Daisy scampered outside.

Sniff, Sniff, Sniff.  Daisy howled excitedly as she found the trail.  Now the refreshing smell was clearer, and she could smell a juicy orange on the breeze.  The little dog followed the scent into the enchanted forest.  It changed as she tracked it. Now, added to the juicy orange smell was the soft, flowery scent of a white rose.  Daisy smiled enjoying the added scent.  It was as if someone had added a red rose to a green forest painting.  That layer drew the little dog further into the forest.

  • 658. Naptime or Not: a kids’ relaxation and story
It's a beautiful day in the Ahway Island Cove and Oceana Sea Otter wants to play! But all the other otters are napping. Should Oceana wake them up or not?

    Narrator: Male

    Story Begins: 4:17

    Naptime or Not Excerpt:

It was calm and peaceful in the cove tucked along Ahway Island’s eastern shoreline. Waves gently lapped against the rocks, creating a soothing rhythm. Not far off the coastline, a group of sea otters was sound asleep, each floating on their backs at the top of the waves.  The  ocean softly rocked them back and forth, back and forth.
But one little otter sat up. Oceana had been trying and trying to nap quietly with the rest of the otters, but she just couldn’t sleep. She was wide awake, and she wanted to go out and play. Yes, the sun was warm and bright, which made some otters just want to curl up on the sun-warmed waves and sleep. But the bright, cheery sunshine also caused the more distant waves of the Ahway Island Sound to twinkle invitingly.  Seeing the sparkly waters just made Oceana want to go out and play, not sleep!

It's a beautiful day at the Ahway Island Cove and Oceana Sea Otter wants to play! But all the other otters are napping. Should Oceana wake them up...or not?

It was calm and peaceful in the cove tucked along Ahway Island’s eastern shoreline. Waves gently lapped against the rocks, creating a soothing rhythm. Not far off the coastline, a group of sea otters was sound asleep, each floating on their backs at the top of the waves.  The ocean softly rocked them back and forth, back and forth.

But the bright, cheery sunshine also caused the more distant waves of the Ahway Island Sound to twinkle invitingly. Seeing the sparkly waters just made Oceana want to go out and play, not sleep!

Oceana looked around at the rest of the group of little otters. Yes, everyone was sleeping, even Oceana’s best friend, the usually-lively Alonzo. He was snoring and obviously dreaming of something fun because his paws kept twitching. Oceana giggled a moment, but then she sighed. Ugh, even Alonzo was napping. What would she do?

Oceana thought a bit. Maybe she should try one more time to go to sleep. No…she had already tried that for a long time. There was no point in trying any longer. Nodding her head decisively, Oceana decided to go explore the shoreline of the cove. Yes, that would be fun! She often did things with her friends, so it would be interesting to go off by herself. She could go take a look at the rocks on the surface and under the water. Oceana liked rocks and stones a lot. And maybe when she was done exploring, her friends would be done with their naps and be ready to play with her again.

As a storm rolls by, Bliss Blanket hugs her little girl. They both feel better knowing they have each other.
Hello everyone!  We hope you enjoyed our new story this week. Now, welcome to Favorite Friday! Sometimes we like to listen to our favorites again. Please enjoy “Rumbling Skies” and we’ll be back with a new story on Monday!
    Narrator: Male

    Story Begins: 8:31

    Rumbling Skies Excerpt:
Bliss the blanket was folded nicely on the little bed.  She had had a bath in the washing machine, a warm tumble in the dryer, and now felt ready to relax.  Bliss took a deep dragon breath in and out as a soft pitter patter sound filled the room.  The little green blanket gazed outside and noticed rain drops filling the air.  Little drops of water dotted the window, and then they began to roll downward.  Each drop grew larger and larger as it rolled down, until it splashed on the windowsill.  Bliss wondered what was happening outside as the light grey sky grew darker and darker. The rhythm of the rain increased, faster and faster the drops fell drumming on the roof of the house.  With a flash the room lit up, and then grew dark again. Then the little green blanket heard a rumble in the distance.  The deep sound rolled closer and closer.

With the next flash, Bliss looked around the room to see if everyone felt ok.  She knew that thunderstorms could seem scary.  All the toys seemed to be fine. Thunder rumbled again, a little louder this time.  The little green blanket took a deep dragon breath in and out as she settled herself down.  Then Bliss realized the little girl wasn’t in the room. The blanket knew that the little girl was afraid of thunderstorms, and hoped she was feeling safe.  Once again lightning flashed, lighting up the room.  The blanket could see all the toys clearly in that flicker of light.  They all looked surprised as the thunder rumbled so loudly the house shook.  Just then, the little girl opened the door and ran into her room.  She quickly hopped up into her bed, grabbed Bliss the blanket and held her tight.

  • 656: Sally’s Good Day: a kids’ meditation and story
Sally Sparrow learns that she shouldn't make assumptions about others.

    Narrator: Male

    Story Begins: 5:04
    Sally's Good Day Excerpt:

It was a sunny mid-morning on Ahway Island as Sally Sparrow coasted through the skies of the quiet little neighborhood where she lived. Sally felt certain today was going to be wonderful – there was such beautiful weather and she had big plans for the day: visiting both the Ahway Island Forest and the Ahway Island Library.

As Sally flew through the neighborhood, she sang her favorite song as she made her way toward the Ahway Island Forest, where she was going to have a lovely lunch from her favorite blueberry bush.

There were many berry bushes in the forest, but Sally usually went to the same one, a large blueberry bush not far from the edge of the forest. The bush had extra tasty berries, and it sat in a patch of lush green grass along the banks of the Ahway Island River. There, Sally could get a drink from the river if she was thirsty after eating. Ever since she had first discovered this bush, Sally had decided it was her favorite, and she always came back to it. Sally liked routines and knowing what to expect.
