  • 283. Flying Friends: a calming meditation and story for kids
The Sparkling Train introduces Dragon to the airplanes. It's nice to have some friends to fly with!
Hello everyone!  We hope you enjoyed our new story this week. Now, welcome to Favorite Friday! Sometimes we like to listen to our favorites again. Please enjoy “Flying Friends” and we’ll be back with a new story on Monday!
    Narrator: Male

    Story Begins: 8:07

    Flying Friends Excerpt:
Dragon gazed at the red-orange sun through the leaves and branches of the trees in the forest. It sank lower and lower in the sky until it completely disappeared.  Dragon felt all fluttery in its belly knowing that tonight the train would introduce it to the planes at the airport.  The dragon always felt a little fluttery in the belly when meeting someone new.  Would the planes be friendly? Taking a deep dragon breath in and out Dragon realized that if the train said that the planes were friendly, they probably were.  Feeling reassured, the dragon headed to the train’s forest platform.

As the dragon approached, the sparkling train whistled to tell Dragon that it was time to go.  The whistle was also the signal that the people had all left.  Cautiously the dragon climbed up to the train’s platform.  When the sparkling train saw Dragon it smiled and said, “There you are! Are you ready to meet the planes?”  Dragon shrugged its shoulders and took a deep dragon breath in and out.  The flames showed butterflies dancing in the dragon’s belly. “I understand.  You feel nervous.” the train said, “Does it help you to know that the planes are excited to meet you? They’ve been asking me when you’re coming every time I go past the airport.”  Dragon nodded, feeling relieved to know that the planes were looking forward to their meeting.  “They really are very nice.” the train added, its doors whooshed open, and the dragon stepped aboard.

  • 644: Cody Helps Out: a children’s relaxing story and meditation
Cody Coyote goes on a picnic with his sister and unexpected helps Ruby June and Henry get their soccer ball back!

    Narrator: Male

    Story Begins: 4:38
    Cody Helps Out Excerpt:

It was a bright sunny day on Ahway Island. Cody Coyote came out of his family’s den in the Ahway Island Focus and wandered over to his favorite nearby rock. He jumped up onto the rock and settled himself on its cool surface, ready to enjoy the morning. He swung his tail as he sat, enjoying the fresh morning breeze. He looked up at the trees and watched the delightful bluebirds and cardinals playing in the upper branches. From time to time, he whined back at them in greeting as he listened to them singing in the trees.

Cody had just woken up, but he was excited to start his day. Today, Cody was going to have a picnic with one of his siblings, his sister Claire. Claire had suggested it; she was always the sibling most likely to take charge and make plans. They were going to head toward the edge of the forest, close to where the humans lived, and eat some of the delicious blackberries they knew were growing near a public park.

Cody was looking forward to the picnic. Blackberries were some of his favorite things. He was excited to eat a whole bunch of them. His sister Claire liked to sleep in, though, and so she hadn’t woken up yet. But Cody didn’t mind waiting for her. It was a beautiful, peaceful morning and he didn’t mind having a little time to himself. He always enjoyed just watching other creatures – humans, birds, bugs – it didn’t matter who they were; Cody liked seeing how they interacted with each other. So, Cody just sat quietly on the rock, thinking about the upcoming picnic.

  • 282. Welcome: a bedtime meditation and story
Anora and Alice spend a rainy day painting new signs for Ahway Island. Now visitors will know how to relax.
Hello everyone!  We hope you enjoyed our new story this week. Now, welcome to Favorite Friday! Sometimes we like to listen to our favorites again. Please enjoy “Welcome” and we’ll be back with a new story on Monday!
    Narrator: Female

    Story Begins: 10:01

    Welcome Excerpt:
The falling rain drummed a steady beat on the roof of the house.  With a great gust of wind the rain increased the intensity of its rhythm.  Alice stopped and peered out the window.  It sure was dark outside.  As she watched rain drops roll down the window, thunder rumbled, telling Alice that today was an indoor day.  Alice felt her shoulders droop in disappointment.  Today Anora was coming over to play, and they always played outside.  Feeling her disappointment grow, Alice took a deep dragon breath in and out.  She knew Anora liked to keep busy. What could they do inside?  Alice took another deep dragon breath in and out and remembered finding the old Ahway Island sign.  She and Anora had decided that it would be nice to paint some new signs so that visitors could find Ahway Island and relax.  Alice looked at the clock.  She had about an hour before Anora would arrive.

Peeking into the study where her mom was busy working on her computer Alice asked, “Mom do we have any paint and some wood?” Alice’s mom stopped typing and looked up at her. “Well, we definitely have paint.  What do you need the wood for?” her mom responded, curious what her imaginative daughter was planning.

  • 641: Bin Buddies: a mindful story and relaxation
Tamara Trash Can feels a little uncomfortable when Rhonda Recycling Bin arrives at the Ahway Island Animal Sanctuary's Visitors Center. Will the two become friends?

    Narrator: Female

    Story Begins: 4:01
    Bin Buddies Excerpt:

It was a sunny day on Ahway Island. The sun sparkled brilliantly on every part of the island, from the big snowy mountains in the north to the calm sandy beaches along the coast. Even the Ahway Island Sanctuary was bathed in sunlight. The animals were out and about, joyously playing or relaxing in the warm sun. Since it was so nice out, the Visitor Center in the Sanctuary was filled to the brim with excited guests. Tamara Trashcan was happy to see it all from her nice little corner in the Visitor Center.

Tamara Trashcan sat right next to the guest check-in station. From there, Tamara was able to see and help all the friendly guests. She even helped the little kids when they needed to throw away their candy wrappers or chewing gum. She took all the trash in through the little opening on the top of her big gray lid.

Tamara loved helping guests who needed to get rid of their trash in a responsible way, instead of littering. It was important to Tamara that she collect all the trash so that it wouldn’t cause the Sanctuary paths to get all messy! Some days, Tamara wouldn’t have to carry a lot of trash but on other days, especially busy days, she felt like she was carrying a little too much. But Tamara loved to help anyway, even if she did get a little full sometimes.

The Sparkling Train shares the newly discovered island name, Ahway Island, with the airplanes.
Hello everyone!  We hope you enjoyed our new story this week. Now, welcome to Favorite Friday! Sometimes we like to listen to our favorites again. Please enjoy “Home on Ahway Island” and we’ll be back with a new story on Monday!
    Narrator: Female

    Story Begins: 8:34

    Home on Ahway Island Excerpt:
Energy filled the sparkling train as the morning sun warmed its solar cells.  The train smiled, eager for the day to start.  Knowing that the planes were waiting to hear the name of their island, the solar train felt excited to share the dragon’s news.  But that would have to wait until all the passengers had reached their destinations.  Powered up with sunlight, the sparkling train checked to see who was waiting for the morning route. Many cheerful people were lined up on the platform, ready to begin their day. The sparkling train opened its doors with a whoosh and the passengers filed on board.  Once everyone was seated the train gently rolled forward to begin its route.  Slowly the train made its way through the land of the people picking up and dropping off until there were no passengers left on board.

Knowing that there would be a nice break before lunch the train chugged over to the airport.  As it approached the airplanes’ hangar the train blew its happy whistle to let them know it was there.  The train rolled to a stop outside the hangar. The planes and helicopter rolled outside to meet it.
Today’s Meditation: Today, enjoy the feeling of your body relaxing into the warm sand on a sunny beach.

  • 639: Sadie’s Sandy Day: a calming meditation and story
Sadie Seahorse feels safe near the sand bed. A new friend shows up to keep her company.

    Narrator: Male

    Story Begins: 4:41
    Sadie's Sandy Day Excerpt:

It was a beautiful, sunny day on Ahway Island. Seagulls flew gracefully just above the blue waters as the wind gently pushed and pulled the waves. There was a gentle whoosh sound every time the waves moved back and forth. The ocean world of Ahway Island seemed extra lively and joyful today.

Below the waves, there were many fish swimming around the inky expanse of waters. Most of the fish were eagerly swimming and chatting with friends…but not Sadie Seahorse. Sadie was swimming close to the seafloor, near the kelp and sand. Sadie didn't want to go anywhere farther out than that today. She felt safe and secure near the sand.

Recently, Sadie realized she felt quite uncomfortable if she was around too many other fish too often. Lots of fish were fast swimmers, lots of fish were loud, and lots of fish wanted to talk to everyone. Sadie would start to feel nervous around these fish if she was around them very long. More and more, Sadie tried to stay close to the sand and away from the crowded open waters. She called the sand her ‘safety sand.’

Today’s Meditation: Enjoy the feeling of your body relaxing into the warm sand on a sunny beach.

    Spread the Word Excerpt:
The sun peaked through the buds and branches of the trees, slowly changing color from orange into a deep red.  The warm glow of the sunset filled the enchanted forest.  The dragon admired the surrounding beauty and thought, “This is Ahway Island.” Taking a deep dragon breath in and out the dragon basked in the peace and then realized it was about time for the sparkling train to finish one of its routes.  Now would be a great time to share the name of the island with the train, if all the passengers had left, of course.

As the dragon stepped out of the cozy cave Rebel and Riley the raccoons scampered past. They were on their way to meet Rob raccoon for a little bit of mischief.  With a sigh and a deep dragon breath in and out the dragon shared that the island’s name was Ahway Island. With another deep dragon breath in and out, the dragon asked the raccoons to share the name with anyone they met.  Riley and Rebel nodded happily and off they went.  The dragon shared the name of the island with Mya the mouse, Tad and Tanner the Toads, and Carrie the cardinal before reaching the sparkling train’s forest platform.

On a stormy day at the Ahway Island Airport, Hazel Airplane mispronounces a word and learns that everyone mispronounces things sometimes!

    Narrator: Female

    Story Begins: 3:44
    Articulate Airplanes Excerpt:

Recently, there had been a run of stormy weather on Ahway Island. Earlier in the week, there had been a tornado warning. No tornados had actually struck the island, but it was enough to shut down the Ahway Island Airport for a while. And both yesterday and today there were strong winds and lightning, so the Airport staff had decided that the small airplanes, Herb, Holly, Hawk, and Hazel, as well as Harmony Helicopter, should all stay safely inside their hangar instead of risking flight.

So, this afternoon, once again, all the little airplanes were safely tucked away in the hangar, as they had been for several days.

Harmony gave a sigh. “Ugh! I’m tired of this bad weather. I want to go out in the sky and play!”

    Story Begins: 9:35

    The Forest's Secret Excerpt:
Anora gave her mom a kiss on the cheek as she hurried outside to meet her friend Alice. The two friends had plans to go exploring today.  Anora hurried over to the big rock with the sparkling pink crystals at the edge of the forest.  Then she heard a voice say, “I’m right behind you!” with a giggle.

Anora turned around, knowing immediately who it was, and saw Alice quickly catching up with her.  The girls giggled as their eyes met.

“Are you ready to go exploring?” Anora jumped as she asked excitedly.

“I could hardly wait!” Alice said jumping along with her. “I even wore my boots in case there was mud.”

“Me too!” Anora said pointing to her feet.  Then she stopped jumping and asked, “Hey, what’s that?”

Anora had noticed a little toad sitting next to the sparkly rock.  She bent over to touch the toad and the toad hopped just out of Anora’s reach.

Peanut Squirrel is always tired these days. Will she tell her friend Nutsy Squirrel why she is so tired?

    Narrator: Male

    Story Begins: 5:11
    Squirrely Games Excerpt:

Peanut Squirrel yawned. She and her friend Nutsy Squirrel had just finished their lunch of delicious nuts and were sitting cozily next to the roots of a big oak tree on a quiet Ahway Island Street.

“Those nuts were tasty!” said Nutsy chattily.

“Mmhmm…” responded Peanut. She felt too sleepy to actually say a whole sentence. She allowed her eyes to drift shut.

“Now that we’re done eating,” continued Nutsy, “Do you want to go play tag?”

“Not right now,” said Peanut, yawning again. “I’m kind of sleepy.”

“Okay!” replied Nutsy, undeterred. He wasn’t quite back up to his usual energy level after their big meal, but he was quickly regaining full power.

“Yes, those nuts were sure delicious,” he continued in his loud, fast-paced vocal style. “You’ve got to love oak trees and their acorns! We’re lucky there are so many of them around here…so many trees, I mean, but acorns, too, I guess. Of course, I like walnuts, too. Walnuts are great. Mrs. Martinez has the best walnut tree in the neighborhood – in my opinion. Don’t you think so, Peanut? And I know we both love almonds when we can get them, which isn’t as often as you or I would like, for sure! Did I ever tell you about the time I found a macadamia nut lying around one of the houses? That was a treat. Buttery, soft…In fact, it tasted like…”
