Today on Beating Cancer Daily, Saranne focuses on anemia, an often overlooked but critical topic for cancer patients, survivors, and anyone experiencing persistent fatigue. Drawing from her personal experiences with anemia during both childhood and years of cancer treatment, Saranne combines humor and insight while welcoming cancer expert Jacqui Bryan for a detailed discussion. Together, they unpack what anemia really is, the many types it encompasses, from iron deficiency to those linked with chronic illness and cancer, and what symptoms signal a need for medical attention. With practical strategies for those in active treatment or survivorship, the conversation empowers listeners to become strong advocates for their own health.
Jacqui Bryan is a certified nutrition specialist, whole health educator, certified health coach, and registered nurse, celebrated for her multi-decade cancer survivorship and expertise in nutrition and wellness. "I think anemia is an awesome topic today because it's often overlooked, yet it affects more than 2 billion people worldwide." ~Jacqui Bryan
Today on Beating Cancer Daily:
· Anemia is not a single disease but a wide-ranging symptom signaling underlying health issues, especially common during cancer treatment
· More than 2 billion people globally are affected by anemia, including significant numbers of cancer patients and survivors
· There are over 400 types of anemia, most commonly from iron, vitamin B12, or folate deficiency, as well as those linked to chronic diseases or blood loss
· Symptoms go beyond just feeling tired; look for shortness of breath, pale or yellow skin, heart palpitations, dizziness, headaches, and problems with concentration
· Treatments must be personalized; iron supplements help some, but others require B12, folate, transfusions, or addressing chronic inflammation
· Pairing iron-rich foods with vitamin C increases absorption, while coffee, tea, and dairy can inhibit it
· Anemia caused by cancer or cancer therapies often leads to profound, overwhelming fatigue that requires compassion and specific support from loved ones
· Patients are encouraged to keep a symptom journal, communicate proactively with healthcare teams, and advocate for tests and treatments tailored to their specific needs

Today on Beating Cancer Daily:
· The MIND Diet is a research-backed approach that combines elements of the Mediterranean and DASH diets and focuses on nourishing the brain alongside the body
· Leafy greens are essential, with at least six servings per week linked to having brain function equivalent to someone 11 years younger
· Blueberries are celebrated as a key food, rich in anthocyanins that reach the brain and may help improve memory
· Healthy fats such as extra-virgin olive oil and fatty fish provide necessary components for brain cell membranes
· Plant-based proteins like beans, lentils, nuts, and seeds help feed good bacteria in the gut, which in turn impacts mood, cognition, and sleep
· The MIND Diet encourages limiting red meat, cheese, pastries, and fried or fast food to protect brain health
· The focus is on making consistent progress rather than achieving perfection, since even modest improvements in eating habits offer cognitive benefits
· Small changes, like adding berries or using olive oil instead of butter, can create noticeable improvements in mental function
