Today on Beating Cancer Daily, Saranne brings together decades of survivorship wisdom and the power of laughter to spotlight the transformative potential of functional nutrition for cancer thrivers. After launching the ComedyCures Foundation from the chemo chair during her first treatment for Stage IV cancer, Saranne has built a community focused on self-care and empowerment. In this episode, she is joined by recurring expert Jacqui Bryan to unpack what makes functional nutrition both fun and foundational, especially for those facing cancer. Together, they explore root cause resolution, whole-body systems, and practical strategies for self-advocacy in health, always with a dose of playfulness and resilience.
Jacqui Bryan joins as a certified nutrition specialist, registered nurse, whole health educator, and certified health coach who is now a doctoral candidate in integrative nutrition. With two master's degrees, one in functional nutrition, Jacqui's passion for personalized, evidence-based care shines as she shares her journey from collegiate athlete and RN to cancer survivor, functional nutritionist, and teacher. Through over 100 episodes with Saranne, Jacqui has empowered listeners to engage with self-care, holistic healing, and tailored nutrition strategies.
"Functional nutrition looks at the root causes of disease rather than merely treating a symptom...functional medicine looks at root cause resolution, and it is a personalized approach, which is why I love it." ~Jacqui Bryan
Today on Beating Cancer Daily:
· Functional nutrition emphasizes root cause resolution over treating isolated symptoms.
· A personalized, individualized approach is key, nutrition plans are tailored to each person’s genetics, lifestyle, and environment.

· Functional nutrition considers not just diet, but sleep, stress, exercise, and social connection as part of holistic care.
· There is a shift away from the "band-aid" approach, focusing on supporting the body's systems and restoring balance.
· Self-care is foundational, organ health, immune support, and nutritional choices all contribute to cancer recovery and prevention.
· Community and therapeutic relationships empower patients to take ownership of their health journey.
· Environmental toxins and processed foods, including microplastics and chemical additives, are highlighted as key factors influencing cancer risk and recovery.

In today's episode, Saranne dives into a crucial topic - your mood! We all know being a caregiver is far from easy, sometimes even more challenging than being a patient. So, it's incredibly important to foster effective communication between patients and caregivers. That's where the concept of mood temperature comes in. It's a tool that helps patients to express their emotional state to their caregivers. Once aware, caregivers can then step in with the right kind of support, be it a comforting hug, practical help, or simply lending a sympathetic ear tailored to the patient's mood.

Today on Beating Cancer Daily, Saranne welcomes functional medicine expert Jacqui Bryan for an in-depth conversation about the growing trend of IV supplement drips, with a particular focus on NAC (N-acetylcysteine) and its relevance for those facing a cancer diagnosis. Together, they break down what NAC actually is, the distinction between obtaining it from food versus supplements, and the safety considerations for cancer patients, especially those with scarred veins or a history of intense treatments like Stage IV chemotherapy. Jacqui shares personal anecdotes and clinical wisdom, examining whether these trendy infusions offer real benefits or if a well-chosen diet might serve just as well—minus the needles.
Jacqui Bryan is a certified nutrition specialist, whole health educator, health coach, and registered nurse, revered for her functional medicine approach to cancer care and recovery. Drawing on her expertise in nutrition and integrative health, Jacqui helps individuals navigate the complex intersection of supplements, food, and healing, always with a focus on safe, evidence-based recommendations for those living with or beyond cancer.
"My first choice really is having this high-quality diet that will help you get similar benefits... it's not exactly the same, but NAC does have benefits for a certain population."
~Jacqui Bryan
Today on Beating Cancer Daily:
· IV NAC supplementation is gaining attention, but it's important to understand who truly benefits and the risks involved.
· NAC is both a prescription medication and a supplement, most often used to support liver function and to thin mucus in hospitals.
· The primary benefit of NAC supplementation or cysteine-rich foods is aiding the production of glutathione, a master antioxidant for cellular protection.
· Protein-rich foods like poultry, fish, eggs, and plant-based options such as whole grains, legumes, and seeds can provide cysteine for most people.
· Intense supplementation (including IV form) may only be necessary for those with specific deficiencies or medical needs after consulting a provider.
· Those undergoing active cancer treatment, especially with damaged veins from chemotherapy, may find dietary approaches more comfortable and practical than IV drips.
· NAC carries potential safety considerations, including interactions with medications and certain conditions such as bleeding disorders or asthma; medical oversight is essential.
· Most individuals eating a healthy diet without specific medical concerns do not need to supplement with NAC.
