  • Callus Your Mind: Do Hard Things!

    Send us Fan Mail

Our natural human instinct is to run away from things that could potentially cause us any degree of pain or discomfort. But what if i told you that this instinct actually ill-prepares us for the inevitable reality of painful experiences in our lives? And what if i told you that there is a way to daily train our minds to build effective stamina for when the difficulties of this life do arrive?

Today's episode centers around the idea of the callus mind. Just like painful cuts and blisters form on the palms of our hands as we begin training at the gym, regularly doing hard things (walking towards discomfort as opposed to running away from it) is sure to sting and burn in the beginning. But over time the cuts and blisters turn into dead skin, creating a barrier between us and the thing that makes us stronger.

Listen to today's episode to learn more. Why should we, and how can we work towards callusing our minds?

  • Celebrating ONE YEAR of Being Aloud!

    Send us Fan Mail

44 episodes, and hours upon hours of thinking and planning and creating have all brought us to this moment of reflection and celebration.

Today's episode is a HUGE celebration of a HUGE milestone: the Being Aloud podcast is celebrating its first birthday. That is 365 days since the launch of the very first episode of a platform that has touched so many lives, and opened a channel of open and vulnerable conversation.

In celebration we reflected upon the journey: how it started, how it evolved, and how it brought us to where we are today. We also discussed a few huge lessons we've learned:

    • The importance of community (online and offline)
    • The value of vulnerability
    • The necessity for consistency
    • The wonders of showing up as our authentic selves

I can't wait to see how this podcast evolves in the years to come. And THANK YOU for all the love and support you've shown this podcast over the past year.

    ONWARD!

  • The Difference Between Loneliness and Being Alone

    Send us Fan Mail

In a world that is now more connected than ever before– with the internet and globalization and easy travel etc– the line between loneliness and aloneness is becoming more and more blurred. It is now natural and normal and expected, even, that we are connected at all times, if not in person then at least through social media and the internet, through a constant and oftentimes subconscious attachment to our devices. Most of us reach over to grab our phones and automatically tap social media apps which lead us into an out-of-actual-touch vortex of endless scrolling, the second we get a second. We’ve been conditioned into thinking we need to know what other people are up to, or what information is being made available.

The concept of being alone now makes us so uncomfortable–anxious even– that we feel an irking sense of loneliness and agitation unless we’re either physically or virtually surrounded by other human beings.

In today's episode we delve into the importance of spending time by ourselves, despite the initial discomfort. We identify the fact that this initial discomfort does not always mean that we are lonely; just that we haven't been trained to enjoy our own company.

  • The Best Way to Make Intelligent Decisions: The Great Mental Models

    Send us Fan Mail

Today's episode is a book review of Shane Parrish's "The Great Mental Models Vol. 1".

This book has drastically transformed my way of thinking since I've listened to it on Audible. I already know I'll be buying the hard copy and re-visiting it *often* for the next few years. I genuinely could not recommend it more!

In today's episode we discussed 3 of Parrish's 9 mental models, practically relating them to our real lives as Egyptians or Middle Easterners in general. How can we make better, more well informed decisions?

The three mental models we explored were:

    1. The Map is Not the Territory
    2. Occam's Razor
    3. Hanlon's Razor

Today's exclusive episode is raw and vulnerable and fragile and stubborn--and all other contradictory adjectives you can think of. Because nothing makes sense when our own bodies or the bodies of those we love prove human (aka. weak, precarious, and breakable). Nothing makes sense when a reminder of our finitude pierces the comfortable routine air.

Life has been scary for a while now, and i figured (as with everything else) that since i'm not the only one, it could be a good idea to let a struggling someone know that they're not alone either.

  • When Spring Just Isn't Springing--Insisting on Hope in the Ordinary

    Send us Fan Mail

I am recording this episode in the month of May—a month whose emergence means the end of waiting: the end of waiting for winter to end. The end of waiting for the sun to shine. The end of waiting for every good thing that we believe lies at the end of every terrible thing we've had to endure in this closing season. So for today's episode of the Being Aloud podcast, join me in conversation about how we can insist on holding onto hope even when our Aprils and Mays—and maybe even our Junes and Julies—continue to feel like the coldest wettest winter.

  • Don't Take it From Me: The Art of Critical Listening

    Send us Fan Mail

Living in a world in which everyone can become a 'content creator' means that there is now a much greater responsibility on the viewer/listener/reader to think critically about the content they consume. Because although we may admire the people on the other side of our screens, we are all incomplete human beings at the end of the day.

In today's episode of the 'Being Aloud' podcast we discuss some of the reasons why critical listening is important, as well as some things we can do to make sure we hold ourselves accountable for the knowledge and opinions we consume.

    Send us Fan Mail

In a world that is constantly telling us to take up less space, choosing to embrace and express our true selves is a massive act of courageous rebellion. And since the world needs us to show up fully (although it might not know it at times), we need to learn how to peacefully and wisely take up space.  And in today's episode we explore 3 ways by which we can do just that!

  • Take up space!

Today's episode is part one of a two-part series that aims to challenge society in its expectation of us to dim our lights in order not to offend. Aren't you tired of being told you're too much? Hasn't this shrinking narrative taken enough of your energy—energy that you could otherwise have been using to live the big life you've been put on this earth to live? I for one am done with making less of myself in order to avoid criticism. I'm done with trying to be less of myself in order to appease a system that has never worked in my favor.

Today's episode highlights some of the ways by which our characters are subconsciously flattened by society's influence all around us. My hope is that, by giving voice to the things we all know deep inside us, we will attain a language that can help us identify society's dimming mechanisms and help us combat them in our everyday lives.
