If you own a dog, you've heard this rule: 1 year for Fluffy equals 7 years for you.
When Darren Simpson learns that his dog is ten years old - 70 in human years - he sets out to find a better way to convert dog years to human years - one with some actual science behind it.
He happens upon a scientific article which explains the thinking behind the traditional algorithm. Dogs on average live to 10 years and humans to 70 years - hence the correlation.
But scientifically, this is incorrect. Scientists found that puppies are middle-aged by the time they are two, and the equivalent of 50 when they are just three-years-old.
However, ageing slows in dogs over time, meaning that by the age of 10, a dog is similar to a person aged 68.
