  • 5 essential skills for business success with Mark Herschberg

Mark Herschberg is the author of The Career Toolkit - 5 Essential Skills for Success That No One Taught You.

Mark shares in this episode the five essential skills – leadership, networking, negotiation, teamwork and effective communication.

We discuss how applying some or all of those skills to your everyday business activities, but in particular those that you would use when presenting, pitching or public speaking, can elevate you above your competitors and indeed your colleagues, enhancing your profile and ultimately boosting your career.

Mark’s top tips for success for implementing the career toolkit essential skills are to:

Firstly learn with other people on a regular basis so that you hone the individual skills within a group environment and therefore can share feedback, tips, advice with each other

Secondly Mark suggests that you focus on one or two of the skills at a time – so for example if you find that during presentations that are effectively sales pitches you are increasingly drawn into negotiations and may not have either too much negotiation experience then focusing on enhancing your negotiation skills will ultimately lead to a higher sales pitch success rate.

Likewise networking is a key skill and very few people who go networking consider learning how to network better, including how you present their elevator pitch.

  • Communicate and Present Better with Laurie Gilbertson

Laurie Gilbertson is a speaker, coach, entrepreneur, trial lawyer and the founder of Tribeca Blue Consulting

Laurie helps professionals communicate with clarity, confidence and creativity when public speaking, presenting, making media appearances or being involved in trial work.

In this episode Laurie shares tips and advice for those looking to deliver their first presentation as well as for experienced presenters and business leaders who want and potentially need to ensure that they understand the benefits of preparation and practice.

As Laurie says on her website ‘public speaking should be an opportunity to excel, not an obligation to dread’. Laurie shares lots of tips and advice around the area that probably holds back most presenters and that is a lack of confidence and the worry about simply being too nervous to speak.

Laurie advises that presenters and speakers talk through their presentation as a way of practising to ensure it works and to never be too prepared – sound advice given the fact that a lot of business presenters and speakers very often for various reasons fail to prepare well and do little or no practice

Laurie's top three tips to transform your presentation and speaking skills are:

    • Be yourself
    • Create an introduction which demonstrates you thought about your audience – this could be in the form of a question, a story that or a prop
    • Deliver a conclusion in a similar format so that you are generating engagement energy at the beginning and the end of your presentation

You can find Laurie at Tribeca Blue Consulting

  • Your journey to becoming a great presenter and speaker with Sam Thiara

Becoming a great presenter and speaker is something that many, if not all, business people aspire to be but the majority don't achieve it simply because they were various reasons don't take that first step, deliver that first presentation or do that first public speaking engagement.

In this episode Sam Thiara shares his story from becoming a nervous, not very good (his view) presenter into being a global speaker.

Sam is a speaker, educator, coach, writer and community do-gooder

In this episode Sam shares top tips and great advice on how to deliver really engaging presentations based around storytelling

Sam shares his CARPE acronym as a way of helping you to create your presentation

The five steps of the acronym are Curiosity, Appreciation, Reflection, Perspectives and Experience

Sam talks about how he found it difficult to deliver his first ever presentation and how he could have easily given up at that point but decided to keep going and recognise that the more times he presented the better he was going to get.

For those who haven’t delivered a presentation Sam advises to potentially be part of a presenting panel so it’s not just you but it’s you and your colleagues so you will feel less exposed.

I always ask guests for a couple of top tips to finish the recording and Sam’s were as follows:

Find the opportunities to be a speaker and talk about something you are comfortable with and knowledgeable about

And secondly integrate stories into your presentation - particularly if you are delivering sales pitch type presentations as doing so will move it from feeling as though its transactional to transformational because your prospective client is more likely to say yes to your pitch if it’s going to transform their business

Finally Sam shared his catchline: ‘If everyone’s life is an autobiography make yours worth reading’

    You can find Sam here

    And on Linked In

And check out his TedX talk here 'Discovering the Extraordinary within the Ordinary' as well as his book Personal Storytelling: Discovering the Extraordinary in the Ordinary

  • 3 things to get right for your key presentation

In this episode of the Better Presentations More Sales podcast host Trevor Lee shares the three key things you really need to get right if you are to deliver a successful key presentation, whether that key presentation is to prospective client, an existing client, colleagues or investors.

So here are the three key things to get right:

Purpose – every presentation has to have a purpose – why are you presenting? What you want the outcome today? What you want the next steps to be? – Without really understanding what your purposes is very hard to actually construct and ultimately deliver a presentation of the some reason the vast majority of presenters overlook a purpose, especially when the presentation is put together by people in the marketing department who want briefed on what the outcome is hoping to be.

Content and Structure – how many times do you see a presentation, maybe how many times have you delivered a presentation where the content starts off all about the presenter and the presenter's company. So just how interesting is that for your audience? Not very I would suggest! Chances are that as you have been asked to present or pitch your audience knows all about you so let's make sure that all content and structure is all about the audience, whether that is a prospective client, investor or event audience. It's not about you it's about them!

Delivery – presentations need to be delivered in a way that engages, educates, enthuses and to a degree entertains the audience receiving it. Presenters often forget how important the style of delivery is. Ask yourself do you actually need slides to deliver your message? Make sure that your presentation is delivered with some passion, enthusiasm and at a variable pace and time, which is particularly important when you are delivering online.

If you need help with a key presentation you can contact Trevor via [email protected] or follow this link to Trevor's key presentation coaching programme.

  • 5 Goals and Challenges for You and Your Business in 2022

In this episode of the Better Presentations More Sales podcast host Trevor Lee shares with listeners 5 goals and challenges for them and their business in 2022.

To make those goals and challenges happen you will need to be proactive, you will need to avoid distractions and you will need to avoid moaning about resources you don't have and instead focusing on making the most of the resources you do have.

    The five challenges:

    1. Half Built Bridges:  This was driven from episode #175 with Stormie Andrews and the challenge is to take one of the projects or ideas that you started in 2021 and didn't complete and make it happen in 2022 but on a grander scale so turn it into a big hairy audacious goal or BHAG
    2. Product/Service Offering Review: Have a good look at what you are offering and identify those products or services that you are investing time and money into which ultimately no one is really purchasing and then get rid of them
    3. Customer Review: Identify customers that bring you low revenue but are high maintenance and make a decision to disengage with them.
    4. I've Always Wanted To: Aim to do that in 2022 – it could be speak at a conference, write a blog, use video on LinkedIn, start a podcast, be a guest on the podcast, write a book ... which ever one it is focus on making it happen in 2022.
    5. Communicate Better: A very simple way of being better in business is to communicate better so pick up the phone rather than send an email that can be misinterpreted, check the consistency of your marketing communication messages across various platforms, in sales calls stop talking and start listening and generally have a communication strategy that focuses on stop selling and start helping.

  • Business Purpose for 2022 - what's yours?

The start of a New Year is always a great opportunity to confirm what your purpose for the year ahead is by asking yourself questions such as:

    • What difference are we going to make in 2022?
    • What are we already better that we could get better again at?
    • Why do we do what we do?
    • Why does our business actually exist?

Your purpose is likely to be in the form of a statement of intent rather than necessarily in a series of goals try and avoid falling into the trap of thinking that five years ago you created a mission statement so that will service as your purpose 2022 or if you're an individual within an organisation then avoid thinking that your purpose is what it says in your job description, because we all know that job descriptions are usually written by people who don't fully understand what it is your customers want you to do.

In this episode I'll be sharing with you an example of my purpose to give you a steer whilst encouraging you to define your own purpose either as a business or as an individual and now is the time to do before you get to far into the year.
