Between the Worlds Podcast

When I think of the 5 of Swords, I think about conflict. Someone is hurt, another someone is feeling bitter and resentful, someone else is on a vindictive rampage. But of course, since tarot is a wisdom tradition, it’s not just going to leave us there in harm’s way like that. It’s got medicine for us, it’s got some strategies, tune in to find out what the 5 of Swords teaches us about transforming hurt into healing.

Our guest today is Marcella Kroll an artist, creator, performer, and psychic medium. Her spiritual guidance provides insight, clarity, and healing on core levels to her clients and students. Embracing her multidimensional and diverse ancestral bloodlines, Marcella offers a safe container for those ready to explore the liminal and do the deep work, either in private sessions or in the sacred sanctuary of learning, ceremony, or ritual. We love Marcella and we know you will too. Join us!

When nothing feels stable, how do you find stability? After the heartbreak of the 3 of Swords, the 4 of Swords reminds us that we’re entering a recovery period. When this card appears,  it’s time to lay down your weapons. Get some rest. It’s okay to retreat a little and regroup. It’s in the dark of the earth that we restore and heal. You will take action again very soon and you need all your strength. Tune in to this episode to learn more about the healing powers of this card and what it offers.

Our guest today is Brandi Spradling of Venus in Retro Tarot. She’s a progressive Black Feminist who practices intuitive tarot from a healing perspective. Brandi has a special gift for making the tarot accessible, especially for those who might feel alienated (neurodivergent folks or people who’ve experienced trauma for instance). She’s doing tarot for real people, and is willing to be vulnerable and her own experiences and how she uses tarot to help her through them. We love her and we know you will too!

Quick head’s up, in this episode we do address a few sensitive issues in this episode, such as mental illness and birth trauma, but MOST of the episode is focused on healing. Just wanted to let you know. x

A sword is a weapon, and weapons are used in armed conflicts. So we wanted to bring Sarah Schulman, author of the book CONFLICT IS NOT ABUSE: OVERSTATING HARM, COMMUNITY RESPONSIBILITY AND THE DUTY OF REPAIR, on the show to discuss the nature of conflict and what we can do to resolve it. Turns out, Sarah has been practicing tarot for decades, and rather than seeing the Suit of Swords as being about conflict, she sees it as being about truth and realization. In this episode we have a lively discussion about how the suit of swords works; how people in positions of power (like some police officers and "President" Tr**p) like to see themselves as victims even when they're being abusive and why that is; and how the Suit of Swords calls us to take an honest look at ourselves and our communities. This is one of those episodes we SO WISH we could listen to with you in person, because it's challenging and invites a rigorous dialogue. Listen to it with your quarantine buddy and discuss. We're sure it will give you a lot to talk about. Let us know what you think!

More on our guest: Sarah Schulman has written over 18 books, plays, and screenplays. She’s an lgbtqia+ activist, and AIDS historian. Has been awarded a Guggenheim, among many other awards, is the Co-Founder of MIX: NY LGBT Experimental Film and Video Festival, Co-Director of ACT UP Oral History Project, and the US Coodinator of the first LGBT Delegation to Palestine. Sarah Schulman is also on the advisory board of Jewish Voice for Peace, and is  a fellow at the NY Institute for the Humanities at NYU.

We interrupt our usual programming to give a little impromtu pep talk. This little rant / love letter to you is raw and un-edited. A last minute thing coming as a result of... ummm, people storming the capital building and an attempted coup. Basically, we didn't feel right putting out our scheduled episode but Amanda still had a few things to say, so here it is. Hope you enjoy. And we'll be back with you next week with a special episode about swords and conflict, with a very special guest.

Everyone knows the 3 of Swords, because everyone has known heartbreak on some level, or will someday. When this card appears, so too does hurt. But the hurt points to something authentic and true within your nature that is not being treated with the care that it needs. The solution is tenderness. Our medicine is humility and gratitude. While we might resist the 3 of Swords, it’s actually a good thing, because its wisdom helps us become capable of true intimacy. We might not push people away, or project as much, now that our wounds are being made visible. The poison is also the medicine. As our guest Jessica Dore says in this episode, the 3 of Swords reveals "the dirt-work of the heart"... if we dig hard enough, we might just get a garden.

Our guest today is Jessica Dore, who has a brilliant, soulful approach to the tarot, which she offers via her exceptionally popular Instagram and Twitter feeds. She’s a licensed social worker, who also worked in publishing for many years, and now she’s a full time tarot maven. She’s got a book on the tarot coming out next year through Viking, and we can’t wait for you to meet her and hear what she has to say about the 3 of Swords.

In the 2 of Swords, a woman has to make a big decision without having all the information she needs. She's paralyzed by the thought she might make the wrong choice, and so she waits. The wisdom of this card teaches us how to move forward even when we feel caught in indecision. We could be deciding where to live; whether to break up or hook up; which next project to begin; or where we should focus our energy. No matter what we're deciding about, this card has some potent medicine for us.

Our special guest today is Chiron Armand, a shamanic practitioner with initiations in Haitian Vodou (Houngan Asogwe) and Brazilian Quimbanda (com licensa). Welcome back to Between the Worlds, Season 3! This season we’re tackling the suit of swords, which deals with two basic themes: truth and conflict. In this episode we discuss the Ace of Swords, going deep into the mythology of the Arthurian Legends, thunder gods, fairy women, gifts from the underworld – AND how all this relates to making choices and finding your life's purpose. We can't wait to get back into the magic with you!

P.S. We also give a brief note about the end of our old podcast, Strange Magic. If you're interested, you can read the full statement below.

Join us for our season finale with superstar special guest, writer and activist adrienne maree brown! We talk about her favorite decks, the pleasures of tarot, the power of witchcraft, and the truth about the 10 of Wands. Usually the 10 of Wands appears when you're feeling burdened, overwhelmed, and when you can't see a way out of the trouble. In the Thoth deck, the 10 of Wands is known as "Oppression" but in this episode we spin that meaning on its head using the wisdom of Octavia Butler. Oppression always implies resistance, and what if your tactic for resistance is... pleasure? Tune in to find out!

9/18/20 5pm PST NEW MOON IN VIRGO HEALING RITUAL

During this ritual, as Mars enters its retrograde and the New Moon in Virgo appears we will be focusing on setting intentions; clearing blocks; going deeper into our physical practices; connecting with our most authentic self; and increasing our capacity for joy presence, and pleasure in our bodies, hearts, and minds.

DURING THIS RITUAL WE WILL BE:

• Receiving guidance and encouragement from our Holy Guardian Angels (our deepest, most authentic selves) for the next step in living out our purpose.
• Using ritual techniques to restore our energy and sense of wellbeing
• Releasing outmoded beliefs from our bodies and using intention and guided meditation.

NOTE: This is Amanda's personal ritual. Please direct questions to [email protected] (not Between the Worlds) - Click here to register.

*Amanda's Family Vulva Goddess / Teddy Bear / Overthrowing Patriarchy Bread Recipe *

(Otherwise Known As "Cinnamon Swirl Loaf")

Basic Bread Ingredients

• 1/4 Cup warm water (about 110 degrees)
• 1 package active dry yeast
• 2 Cups warm milk or vegan milk of your choice (about 110 degrees)
• 2 Tablespoons butter or vegan butter of your choice, melted and cooled
• 2 teaspoons salt
• 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
• 6 to 6 1/2 Cups all-purpose flour

Cinnamon Swirl Section Ingredients

• 4 Tablespoons sugar
• 4 Tablespoons ground cinnamon

Face and Buttons Ingredients

• Raisins or walnuts, cloves, candied ginger, etc.

Step 1. Pour water into bowl; add yeast and stir until dissolved. Add milk, butter, salt and sugar. Stir until well blended.

Step 2. Sprinkle in 3 Cups of the flour, 1 cup at a time, stirring until flour is evenly moistened. Add 4th cup of flour and beat until dough is smooth and elastic (about 5 minutes--rest when you get tired). Mix in 5th cup flour to make a stiff dough.

Step 3. Measure 6th cup of flour; sprinkle about half of it on board. Turn dough out onto heavily floured area of board. Keep a light coating of flour on dough as you begin to knead.

Step 4. Fold dough toward you with your fingers; push away with the heel of your hand. Rotate dough a quarter turn and repeat folding-pushing motion, adding flour to board as you knead. Kneading is finished when dough is nonsticky, smooth and satiny.

Step 5. Put dough in greased bowl; turn over to grease top. Cover bow with clear plastic wrap or damp cloth. Let rise in warm place (80 degrees) until doubled (about 1 1/2 hours). Test by inserting two fingers into dough--if indentations remain, dough is ready to shape.

Step 6. After dough has risen, punch it down to release air bubbles, then turn dough out onto a lightly floured board. Knead dough briefly and shape into smooth oval.

Step 7. Divide dough in half by grasping dough in center and squeezing.

Step 8. Roll out each half into a rectangle about 6 by 16 inches. Mix together cinnamon and sugar for swirl. Sprinkle half of mixture evenly over each rectangle. Beginning with the narrow side, roll each half tightly into a loaf. Seal ends and seam by pinching with your fingers

Step 9. Let rise, covered, on greased cookie sheet for half an hour. Cut one half into half again and, of the two quarters, cut one into six pieces for legs, arms and ears of the goddess / teddy bear / patriarch. Cut a small piece off of the large (undivided half) and use for  boobs / snout / penis. That is, the large half is the body, the quarter is the head, the six pieces are shaped to form arms and legs and the small piece is for the   boobs / snout / penis. Pinch pieces together, cover, and let rise another 15 to 20 minutes. Place raisins or walnuts for eyes or pierce the patriarch with cloves.

Step 10. Bake in 375 degree oven for about 35 minutes or until loaves are nicely browned and sound hollow when tapped. Remove from oven and turn loaves onto racks to cool.
