This week it was revealed that high-ranking Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet is one of more than 80 members of the clergy facing allegations of sexual abuse in a class-action lawsuit in Quebec. Following that news, the Vatican said a preliminary examination it did into allegations against Ouellet found the case doesn’t warrant further investigation. Ouellet has denied the allegations. Scholars Julie Hanlon Rubio and Paul J. Schutz of Santa Clara University just released a report called Beyond Bad Apples: Understanding Clergy Perpetrated Sexual Abuse as a Structural Problem & Cultivating Strategies for Change. They join guest host Megan Williams to talk about the factors that enable abuse in the church and the structural change needed to combat it.
