What is the symbolic meaning of the seven-sealed scroll in the book of Revelation? Dr. Kurschner first described three common interpretations. Then he explicated his new view, which is the most plausible, called a certificate of debenture (i.e. debt).

The nature of the first four seals, fifth seal, and the sixth seal support this interpretation, which also gives additional support for the prewrath position in the book of Revelation.

The seals on the scroll are not God’s wrath. Rather, the seals symbolize the accumulating debt of judgment that the wicked deserve and eventually will have to pay up when the scroll is opened, unleashing the trumpet and bowl judgments of the day of the Lord’s wrath.

When Jesus returns it will not unfold how the Left Behind movies portray it, nor will it be how amillennialists portray it as some amorphous, instantaneous event where everything is ushered into the eternal state.

Rather, God will be glorified as he “shows off” his power through many events, especially the resurrection of the saints on earth as a testimony to the world before they are raptured to the sky where Jesus will be, where he then pours out his day of the Lord’s wrath on this evil world.

Dr. Alan Kurschner established, in previous episodes, a biblical-theological pattern in which God has worked with both Israel and the church simultaneously in the past and in the present.

It should not be unexpected then that God will work with both Israel and the church at the same time in the future, particularly during the seven years.

There is a striking juxtaposition in Rev 7 depicting God’s protection of two groups just before the day of the Lord’s wrath begins with the opening of the seventh seal. The first group is the 144,000 “from all the tribes of the people of Israel.”
