  1. Number 1: The Spirit of the Messiah in Moses

Spirit of God E5 — From the first pages of Scripture, we begin hoping for an ideal human image of God who will be filled with God's Spirit to truly represent God's wisdom, word, and rule in the world. Characters like that don’t show up often, but when they do, they’re leaders who combine the roles of a prophet, priest, and king. And in these stories, the Spirit of God is often heavily intertwined. In this episode, Jon and Tim focus on Moses, the first character who fits the prophet-priest-king role and later informs Isaiah’s vision of the future messianic king. CHAPTERS Recap and Setup for the Spirit of the Messiah in Moses (__-10:42) Moses’ Leadership Crisis (10:42-26:39) Moses’ Ruakh Spreads to 72 Elders (26:39-38:26) Isaiah’s Messianic Hope Fueled by Moses (38:26-49:37) OFFICIAL EPISODE TRANSCRIPT View this episode’s official transcript. 2. Number 2: The Spirit of the Messiah in Saul and David

Spirit of God E6 — In the biblical story, God's Spirit fills specific characters. They are to lead and organize Israel, to be priestly mediators of God's covenant, and to prophetically speak God's words to the people. We’re calling the Spirit’s special anointing on these prophet-priest-kings, “the Spirit of the messiah.” In this episode, Jon and Tim explore the Spirit of the messiah in King Saul and King David, two very different portraits of a Spirit-filled ruler. CHAPTERS Recap and Setup for Saul and David (0:00-12:13) The Spirit Rushing on Corrupt Saul (12:13-33:43) An Anointing Spirit for David and a Bad Spirit for Saul (33:43-49:18) The Power of the Spirit and a God-Aligned Heart (49:18-1:01:21) OFFICIAL EPISODE TRANSCRIPT View this episode’s official transcript. REFERENCED RESOURCES The First Book of Samuel (New International Commentary on the Old Testament) by David Toshio Tsumura Correction: in chapter 3 of this episode, Tim accidentally cites 1 Samuel 13:15 as the place where Samuel says “the LORD has sought for Himself a man after his own heart.” This sentence actually appears in 1 Samuel 13:14. Correction: also in chapter 3 of, Tim accidentally cites 1 Samuel 15:22 as the place where Samuel says “You, Saul, have rejected the word of Yahweh. Just like the people rejected me by choosing a king, now you, their king, have rejected me, and so he rejects you from being their king.” This sentence actually appears in 1 Samuel 15:23. 3. Number 3: The Spirit Poured Out on a New Humanity

Spirit of God E7 — So far in this series, we’ve seen a pattern develop where God gives an extra measure of his ruakh to some leaders in Israel. God’s Spirit then empowers these leaders to guide the people, mediate God's covenant, and speak God's words. This is what Israel's prophets are looking forward to: a future prophet-priest-king who will not only restore Israel, but all of creation. In this episode, Jon and Tim explore Isaiah and Ezekiel to discover the Spirit of God’s role in anointing the future anointed messiah, as well as a whole renewed humanity. CHAPTERS Recap and Setup for Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel (0:00-11:07) A New David with a Seven-Fold Ruakh in Isaiah 11 (11:07-23:22) The Spirit-Anointed Servant and a Spirit-Filled People (23:22-42:49) A New Heart and Ruakh in Ezekiel 36-37 (42:49-1:02:47) OFFICIAL EPISODE TRANSCRIPT View this episode’s official transcript. 4. Number 4: The Spirit and Prophecy in the Hebrew Bible

Spirit of God E4 — So far in this series, we've looked at how the Spirit is connected to life and wisdom in the Hebrew Bible. The third most consistent idea associated with the Spirit is God's word, or speech, happening through a human; the Bible calls this prophecy. While most ancient prophecy involved deities taking over a person’s mind, we see a different experience among many of Israel’s prophets. In this episode, Jon and Tim explore this spectrum and focus on prophets like Ezekiel and Micah who experienced a true partnership with the Spirit as they spoke for God. CHAPTERS Recap and the Breath and Word of God in Creation (0:00-10:33) Ancient Prophets as Madmen and Maniacs (10:33-24:47) The True Prophet Template in Ezekiel (24:47-38:29) More of the Gold Standard in Micah (38:29-4:16) OFFICIAL EPISODE TRANSCRIPT View this episode’s official transcript. 5. Number 5: The Spirit, Breath, and Wind Behind Everything

Spirit of God E1 — In 2017, we released a 3-episode series on the theme of the Holy Spirit. And now eight years later, we’ve decided there’s still a lot more to reflect on and explore! The word we translate in English as “spirit” is ruakh in the Hebrew Bible and pneuma in the Greek New Testament. The word refers to God’s personal presence, but it also often refers to wind, breath, and a human’s mind. So how can this word refer to God’s manifest presence and energy, but also created things? In this episode, Jon and Tim kick off a new expanded series on the Spirit of God. CHAPTERS The Frequency of Ruakh and Pneuma in the Bible (0:00-13:32) The Meaning of Ruakh (13:32-25:05) The Paradox of Wind and God’s Spirit (25:05-40:39) Ruakh as a Mind or Idea (40:39-53:39) OFFICIAL EPISODE TRANSCRIPT View this episode’s official transcript.
