  • Big Boss Babble Episode 4 - Shenmue 3, Biomutant, Darkwood, and More
We made another podcast! This week’s host was Terry, and he was joined by speakers Jorge, Dann and Toby to discuss a bevy of topics. You can find each of the discussed topics below. This week's open was a discussion of some of the games that our Editor in Chief, Dann, enjoyed at Gamescom including: Bad North, Bomber Crew, Necrosphere, and more.00:15:58 – Jorge – Shenmue 3. Specifically the unexpected level of quality in the recently released trailer.00:25:29 – Terry – We Happy Few. Specifically the perception that AAA games have to release with obtuse special editions, although also touching on the adapting nature of the game.00:35:01 – Dann – The crash of '17. It's time to have that discussion: will the over-saturation of the market lead to another gulf in the middle of the industry.00:42:48 – Jorge – Biomutant. The latest game announced under THQ Nordic's expansive publishing wing, and how it looks set to reinvigorate the ARPG genre.00:48:52 – Terry – Acid Wizard Studio's decision to release Darkwood for free on Pirate BayThis evolves into a discussion regarding the state of game demos and new ways in which developers could engage audiences..01:05:58 – Dann – Powerstone 2, and how Capcom are wasting time by not bringing back one of the greatest fighting games ever made. This evolves into a discussion about the return of classic games for new audiences, and how the return of these games could be as influential as the games which capture their spirit — like Battle Princess Madelyn, Shovel Knight and more. Each of these will be released as individual Mini Boss Babbles throughout the week, however those versions will lack the opening discussion included in this podcast. Can’t find us on your ideal podcast feed? • Mini Boss Babble Episode 3: Part 6 - >observer_
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the final part of our third Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss the recently released >observer_ from Bloober Games (Layers of Fear). It's a cyberpunk title with amazing visual quality and a surprisingly well structured story which follows the story of an Observer who is seeking his lost son as a mysterious series of events befall a slummy, futuristic Polish tenement block.Much like the previous titles from Bloober Team the game immerses players by carefully guiding their view, and triggering jump scares based both on location and viewpoint. This, as Dann regales, works very well up until they kill the player.Dann led the topic while Toby, Terry and Jorge donned their rigs and strapped their necks with steel plates to avoid having their mind read.If you're interested in hearing the full podcast then you can check it out here. Can't find us on your ideal podcast feed? • Mini Boss Babble Episode 3: Part 5 - AI in Competitive Gaming
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the fifth part of our third Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss the question of, "Should we really be allowing self-teaching AI into competitive gaming?" regarding the recent news that Elon Musk's AI has best professional gamers at Dota 2. (Elon Musk's Dota 2 AI beats the professionals at their own game - Peter Bright - Ars Technica)It's an important topic for a lot of different reasons, if not least because there's a very high chance they're better at doing all the good things humans can do, and don't have to do the bad stuff humans do.Toby led the topic while Terry, Toby and Dann tried not to say anything that might be used against them when they get hauled off to delinquent prison by our new robot overlords. If you're interested in hearing the full podcast then you can check it out here. Can't find us on your ideal podcast feed? • Mini Boss Babble Episode 3: Part 4 - Game of the Year?
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the fourth part of our third Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss the one true constant in the games industry - the Game of the Year. What starts as a discussion as whether PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds can count for the title (as it's not technically released yet) quickly leads onto other contenders: the —almost forgotten— Resident Evil, Nioh, and Wonderboy: The Dragon's Trap, among others.Bad news for the team as they realise too late that they let Dann talk about Wonderboy.Jorge led the topic while Terry, Dann and Toby waxed nostalgic on times past.If you're interested in hearing the full podcast then you can check it out here. Can't find us on your ideal podcast feed? • Mini Boss Babble Episode 3: Part 3 - Sonic Mania
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the third part of our third Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss the topic of Terry's new favourite game of all time: Sonic Mania. It's commonly known that Sonic games are felt by most to have completely missed the mark over the past few generations, however Terry offers that Sonic Mania (and indeed Sega) has reversed that by bringing in a team of fans and modders in order to take Sonic back to his roots and try to right the course of (Sonic) history.Terry led the topic while Dann, Toby and Jorge watched on in awe as he collected several dozen floating rings before falling into a spike pit.If you're interested in hearing the full podcast then you can check it out here. Can't find us on your ideal podcast feed? • Mini Boss Babble Episode 3: Part 2 - Are Games Becoming Too Cheap?
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the second part of our third Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss the question of, "Are Games Becoming Too Cheap?" as raised by a recent article on Polygon (No one knows how expensive video games should be - Ben Kuchera).Opinions are certainly mixed throughout the team, not least due to the vast differences in the regularly accepted price of newly released AAA games vs recent smaller titles like Sonic Mania and Behold the Kickmen, or the fact that digital, PC releases (which are at the heart of the topic) often have less costs than physical alternatives.Jorge led the topic while Dann, Toby and Terry avoided the fact that a 30% cut is a lot of money when it comes to digital storefronts and publishers. If you're interested in hearing the full podcast then you can check it out here. Can't find us on your ideal podcast feed? • Mini Boss Babble Episode 3: Part 1 - Physical Editions without Physical Games
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the first part of our third Big Boss Babble podcast, we discussed the upcoming physical release of Pokemon Gold & Silver; the physical version not actually including the cartridge, but a simple redeem key.Naturally the conversation peters off to discussing the shift to digital and the reasons behind pricing variables, as well as scenarios where a digital key might simply not cut it.Terry led the topic while Toby, Dann and Jorge rattled empty boxes around. If you're interested in hearing the full podcast then you can check it out here. Can't find us on your ideal podcast feed? • Mini Boss Babble Episode 8: Part 4 - New Currencies Coming to Steam
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this Mini Boss Babble we discuss the recent news that new currencies, including Australian Dollars, will be coming to Valve's Steam storefront. The news comes as several new currencies are added on the conversation matrix, meaning fairer prices for areas like Poland. Of course, the main reason the conversation came up was because Toby, our social media manager and longtime contributor, is based in Australia, a nation which has long suffered unfair games pricing.Toby leads the topic while Dann, Dan & Terry all chime in.If you're interested in hearing the full podcast, complete with bonus content, then you have many choices, including:- Checking out our Big Boss Babble archive on Bigbossbattle.com- Heading over to the Big Boss Babble Podiant feed.Or you can check out our Mini Boss Babble Podiant feed. Can’t find us on your ideal podcast feed? • Mini Boss Babble Episode 8: Part 2 - Epic's Accidental Crossplay
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this Mini Boss Babble we discuss the recent news of Epic's Fortnite accidentally enabling cross-play between the Xbox One & PS4.The discussion mainly revolves around the reasoning for it happening, with some members of the team convinced that this is a case of Epic Games doing it to prove that the technology behind it is not difficult, and that it is —in fact— the console manufacturers who are being difficult.Interestingly, the game which seemed most likely to achieve full cross-platform play was last year's super-successful Rocket League, which as a coincidence is developed on Epic Games' Unreal engine. The topic was originally proposed by Jorge, who couldn't make the podcast, so Terry opened instead. Dann, Dan & Toby were also present. If you're interested in hearing the full podcast, complete with bonus content, then you have many choices, including:- Checking out our Big Boss Babble archive on Bigbossbattle.com- Heading over to the Big Boss Babble Podiant feed.Or you can check out our Mini Boss Babble Podiant feed. Can’t find us on your ideal podcast feed?
