I wanted to take this opportunity talk about a couple of my memorable hunts from out west that occurred before I started the podcast, but are especially interesting and contain some valuable lessons learned. Today, we'll talk about my New Mexico mule deer hunt. Not only was that a very fun and ultimately successful hunt, but the story of that particular hunt also has a lot of good lessons for a person who has never been hunting out west can learn from.

Continuing down the same general line of thought from last week's comparison of the 223 vs 308, I realize some people want something that offers a step up in performance compared to the 223/5.56 without going all the way up to the 308. For that reason, a number of other cartridges have been developed over the years that improve on the 223 in many ways, but still function in a standard AR-15 platform. Well, the 6.5 Grendel is likely the most popular cartridge from that family at this instant. With all that in mind, today's episode compares and contrasts the 6.5 Grendel and the 308 Winchester in order to provide some insight into which cartridge is better suited for various situations.

I talk about hunting in Africa all the time on this podcast. This ranges from me talking about my experiences over there to interviewing guys like Kevin Robertson who have way more knowledge and experience in Africa than I do. Today, I'm taking a slightly different tack and interviewing a podcast listener who went on his first hunt in Africa in late 2021.
Brant Benoit is a long-time podcast listener from Georgia and he contacted me in 2020 about booking a hunt in South Africa through my company Big Game Hunting Adventures. He hunted in August-September of 2021, had a great safari, and has some excellent stories and lessons learned to share with you guys. We talk about the process from start to finish from that initial email enquiry, to booking flights, preparing mentally and physically for the hunt, doing rifle import paperwork, to the hunt itself. We also talk about a few lessons Brant learned along the way and some things he wished he knew before he went over there.
