  • Binary System Podcast #278: Beastars, Lore Olympus, and going way too dark for a Thursday

After the weekly SitRep (vaccination numbers, fish tanks, and mask peer pressure) we jump right into the second season of Beastars. Macho lions and meat-eating deer? A wolf in drag? The hallucination with the moth?? We’re very confused, but we do know the homoerotic subtext is text and goes to a really dark place.

After that we talk about the latest episode of Lore Olympus and how it’s going to freaking kill us to wait three weeks to find out what happens, but going by the look on Daphne’s face, it’s nothing good.

So if all that wasn’t dark enough, a discussion about helicopters segues into a talk about death, dismemberment, and illegal organ “procurement” that was so hilariously horrifying we stuck in a content warning just in case you want to skip it.

(It’s not that we’re sorry we went so dark, we’re just sorry we didn’t wait for October. Now we’ll have to dig up something even more horrible for Halloween, goshdarnit…)

The outro music this week is a clip from Just Wondering by Maarten Schellekens.

The really dark and disturbing part of the episode is from roughly 38:26 to 43:15, in case you’d like to jump past it.

Here’s some photos Capn Slack got of his and Kathryn’s new fish tank setup with the AT-AT.

Here’s the article on CBR.com we mentioned that has a few tidbits on the making of Beastars.

Here’s the preview pages for the Lore Olympus book.

This is the link to the Tri-State Crematory Scandal article on wikipedia.

And this is the Swindled Podcast episode that talks about both the Crematory Scandal and the illegal organ harvesting. It’s a fascinating episode, but not for the faint of heart.

  • Binary System Podcast #277: WTNV #191 “The Many, Many Lives of Frank Chen”

We may have mentioned this before, but the Binary System Podcast team loves a good time-travel story. We especially enjoy it when the writers use the side-effects of time travel to really mess with longtime fans who know that none of what’s happening is normal. (Sheriff Pamela Winchel? Michelle Nguyen is marrying Sara Sultan, the fist-sized river rock? Cecil likes Steve Carlsberg’s scones?)

After we recap the wibbly-wobbly, timey wimey story of poor doomed Frank Chen we move on to the weekly SitRep which is, well, the news of the world could honestly be a little better. (The sounds of sirens and the helicopter life-flights coming from the hospital near Elizabeth’s apartment were particularly active this week which seems PRETTY DARN APPROPRIATE.)

To distract ourselves from all of THAT, we discussed Lore Olympus for a little while, along with a bit of Penny Dreadful, a smidge of John Varley, and Kathryn’s “meh” review of the space horror movie “High Life”. The bulk of the episode was devoted to episodes 1-7 of Beastars Season 2, and if you’re not caught up then you probably better skip from minute 19:00 to 35:54 because we spoil ALL THE THINGS.

Corrections: According to the transcript for this week’s Night Vale episode, Frank Chen traveled to Constantinople in the year 600, not 1600. He also traveled to the year 2121, not 2021. Hi, we’re bad at time.

  • Binary System Podcast #276: Beastars, Lore Olympus, and ONE MORE LOOK at Loki

We’ve already talked enough about Loki this month so we don’t need to talk about the season finale AHAHAHAHAHA, kidding, of course we do.

After a quick SitRep where we talk about our trip to visit family (yay!), the rising COVID numbers (boo!) and the second season of Love Death + Robots (..meh?) we fangirl one more time over the Loki season in general and the final episode in particular. (ALL the spoiler warnings for this one.)

After that we touch on Beastars, SDCC announcements, Limetown, My Dad Wrote a Porno, and the recent developments in Lore Olympus (we know who that bird is IT’S ON NOW.)

  • Binary System Podcast #275: World of Tomorrow (and Loki and Lore Olympus)

So of course we’re going to be talking about Lore Olympus and the latest episode of Loki (not the final episode that just aired yesterday, the one before that.) But we also just watched the third installment of Don Hertzfeldt’s World of Tomorrow series, “The Absent Destinations of David Prime” and we have opinions.

Spoilers for all three of these topics, although I wouldn’t worry too much about the spoilers for World of Tomorrow. Even though we give away the ending of that, it doesn’t even come close to explaining what happened.

  • Binary System Podcast #274: Loki and Lore Olympus (again)

Okay let’s just admit it; until the Loki series finishes up on the 14th, this is probably going to be the All Loki All The Time podcast. And we’re never not going to talk about the latest Lore Olympus episode, with all the lovely art and compelling story and darn it when is Hades going to find out about Apollo?

Ahem. Anyway, Welcome To Night Vale was a repeat this week since the show’s on summer break, which was kind of a surprise for us. I mean, they take a break every July, but why would we remember stuff?

We mentioned D’Aulaire’s Book of Greek Myths, if you’ve never read it you should give it a look, technically it’s a children’s book, but to this day we think it’s one of the best books of Greek Mythology out there.

  • Binary System Podcast #273: Loki and Lore Olympus

  • Binary System Podcast #272: Welcome to Night Vale, Lore Olympus and Loki

This week we’re recapping Welcome to Night Vale’s 9th Anniversary episode (NINE YEARS holy Glow Cloud where does the time go) which ended up being a celebration not just of Night Vale but of podcasts in general, as over a dozen shows contributed to the Night Vale universe.

But first up we’ve got the weekly SitRep with beers that taste like beers and thoughts on whether or not registering for the vaccine makes you lose any more privacy than what you already lost to the super computer you carry around in your pocket so you can take pictures of your friend’s cat.

BUT on a lighter note we also recap the second episode of Loki, and sure, we go over all the developments and Easter eggs, but mostly we’re just squeeing over Tom Hiddleston BECAUSE HE’S PERFECT. And then we get into the latest episode of Lore Olympus and the newest info on the Golden Traitor, and Hades and Persephone’s growing relationship, which is also perfect.

  • Binary System Podcast #271: Lore Olympus and the Loki TV show

We haven’t had a chance to discuss Lore Olympus for a while, so this week we’re devoting the entire episode to a recap of episodes 159-161 and oh who are we kidding LET’S TALK ABOUT LOKI.

In all seriousness, we do get around to a spoilerrific discussion of some really fantastic episodes of Lore Olympus (content warning for a therapy session about the trauma Apollo put Persephone through) but let’s face it, we had zero idea what to expect from the Loki TV series, and the season premiere somehow gave us everything we wanted.

  • Binary System Podcast #270: Welcome to Night Vale, Falcon & Winter Soldier, and Unfriended

This week we recap a Night Vale episode that’s all about a severed, sentient human hand, and it’s not even a little creepy, it’s actually very sweet.

Later on in the episode we recap a movie about several kids chatting together on social media, and it’s not even a little sweet, it’s actually very creepy.

But in between that we talk about the final episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, because it’s just awesome. (And we totally ship Bucky and Sam’s sister.) (And we’d like a new show that’s just Sharon Carter being a badass.)

  • Binary System Podcast #269: Bojack Horseman series finale

Seriously you guys we’re not kidding this time, ALL THE SPOILER WARNINGS this episode because we’re breaking down the final season of Bojack Horseman and we’re going to spoil everything. (…yes okay the final episode dropped a year and a half ago but it’s entirely possible there’s people out there who are even worse at TV than we are.)

Of course we never can stick to one topic, so we also discuss a couple random horror movie finds and how we need something to cheer us up afterwards, and how Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me is NOT that thing.
