  • Binary System Podcast #268: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Bojack Horseman, and Lore Olympus

Sure, the final episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier dropped a solid month ago and we’re only halfway through the season, but that’s better than waiting a solid year like we usually do, right? Progress!

After the weekly SitRep (vaccine cards, hockey games, and stupid injuries) we go nuts about the fourth episode of The Falcon and The Winter Solider (the bit with the arm!!) and then break down the first few episodes of Bojack Horseman season six, the latest two episodes of Lore Olympus (shut UP, Leto!) and discuss how noon is a little early for porn.

  • Binary System Podcast #267: WTNV #188 “Listener Questions”

“Why are you pretending you wrote this?”

Not gonna lie, the Night Vale folks had us going for a bit when they said they had to change plans for the episode at the last minute and just answer some fan-submitted questions. Being Night Vale, things get a lot more complicated, very fast. This one’s up there with our favorite episodes now; it starts with a quirky email, and ends with Welcome to Night Vale creator Joseph Fink questioning the very nature of reality.

After the recap we also talk about the latest Welcome To Night Vale live show “All Hail” (ALL HAIL). And we would talk more about The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, but we’re bad at TV and haven’t watched more than the first few episodes. In better news we have started watching Love Death + Robots Volume 2, Elizabeth’s on the final season of Legion, Kathryn’s on the final season of Bojack Horseman, and the whole family’s vaccinated now so we’re fired up and ready to travel across the country! (Or to the hardware store. We’re not picky.)

If anyone’s still wondering, the episode Jeffery was talking about as one of his favorites is in fact the one with the fidelipac cartridge, which we talked about waaaay back in 2015 in this recap here.

  • Binary System Podcast #266: Bojack Horseman, Lore Olympus, and MST3K

This week we’re just drooling about all the things we want to do once we’re fully vaccinated (haircuts and craft stores, we know how to party) and then we jump into a spoileriffic recap of Bojack Horseman season 5, complete with our favorite stunt casting!

The Bojack Horseman bit ended up going on a little longer than expected because we started talking about Hollywood predators and the imbalance of power and how many times do we gotta cancel Joss Whedon before HE JUST GOES AWAY. But then we pulled it back with the adorableness of this week’s Lore Olympus (except for Leto. Ugh, go away Leto.)

After that we wrap up with the results of the MST3K Kickstarter (short version: 6.5 MILLION BABY WOO!), Felicia Day’s Zoom personality (she turns herself into a potato hee hee hee) and how we hope the upcoming season of Love Death + Robots has less vulnerable boobs and more tough women boobs.

Correction: the actor who played Cyborg in Justice League is Ray Fisher, and he deserved better than to put up with Joss Whedon’s manbaby crap.

Here’s Kathryn’s Instagram account, her theme for this year’s Brooklyn Art Library Sketchbook is fan art!

  • Binary System Podcast #265: WTNV #187 recap and TWIN PEAKS THE RETURN

The Night Vale recap is very quick this week, partly because it’s a very cerebral episode about life and identity and carving forgotten languages into insanely tall monoliths, but mostly because Elizabeth finally watched all of 2017’s Twin Peaks: the Return AND HAS SOME QUESTIONS.

SPOILERS AHOY. Listen in as we go over our favorite and least favorite moments (seriously, what the absolute hell, Lynch?) of this weird, weird show. Shout out in the comments if you’ve got any Twin Peaks theories! The weirder the better!

The outro this week is a clip from the Twin Peaks ending theme by Angelo Badalamenti.

And to the surprise of absolutely no one, recording yourself speaking backwards in order to play it forwards is a lot harder than it looks. Kathryn found this site where you can type in what you want to say and it’ll break down the backwards version phonetically.

We talked about the first four episodes of Twin Peaks the Return on this episode back in 2018.

Here’s the link to Kathryn’s review of Twin Peaks: The Final Dossier, which Mark Frost wrote to accompany the season.

And here’s a link to Kathryn’s review of The Secret History of Twin Peaks, which is a little drier, but still a lot of good info.

  • Binary System Podcast #264: The Oscars (…sort of), Bojack Horseman, Twin Peaks and Lore Olympus

If you’re looking for a detailed breakdown of this year’s Oscar ceremony and all the winning films…this is not the podcast for that. Because we barely saw any of the nominees and we certainly didn’t watch the ceremony. Not that it stops us from having opinions!

So after what we laughingly call a recap, we jump into Bojack Horseman season 4 (all the spoilers!), Twin Peaks the Return (more spoilers!) and the latest chapter of Lore Olympus (even more spoilers well okay just a few, there wasn’t as much to spoil this week?)

  • Binary System Podcast #263: WTNV #186 “The Many Lives of Frank Chen”

Big news in Night Vale this week! The Secret Police were given one year to provide the life of Frank Chen back to his family, an impossible task that they somehow managed to accomplish way before the deadline! Yes indeed, Frank Chen, good as new, exactly as he was before, no need to look too closely. Or ask questions. Or…

You’re not buying this, are you? That’s okay, neither is the family of Frank Chen…

In other news, and wow was there a lot of news on the day we recorded this episode. In one day we got the spectacular trailers for Love, Death, and Robots and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the reveal that Olivia Coleman is joining the MCU (or as some will say, the MCU is now joining Olivia Colman’s universe), David Tenant’s birthday, Christoper Eccleston answering fan’s questions and being delightfully prickly, and SOMEBODY finally got her first vaccination shot.

The outro this week is a clip from Hello Robo by TeknoAxe.

The podcast that the Welcome to Night Vale crew recommended is Whatever Happened to Pizza at McDonald’s. It looks weird as heck.

Correction: Blockbusters apparently did NOT censor or otherwise edit videos. They just refused to carry movies that didn’t fit their “family friendly” atmosphere, thus convincing producers that it would behoove them to provide tepid, watered-down alternate versions of unrated or NC-17 films. Vulture has a great article about this and other shady practices, Guys, Blockbuster Wasn’t That Great.

Correction the second: Elizabeth somehow got the idea that the Oscars were this Friday. They’re actually on Sunday. They’re ALWAYS on a Sunday.

  • Binary System Podcast #262: Lore Olympus, Bojack Horseman, and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier

After this week’s SitRep on the vaccine situation (Mom, Dad, and Nathan are 2 for 2, Kathryn and Hannah are 1 for 2, and Elizabeth’s 0 for 2.) (Hurry up Elizabeth! – Kathryn) (I’M WORKING ON IT. – Elizabeth) we jump right into Lore Olympus because holy hell did you see what happened to Minthe??

After that, massive great big spoiler warnings for the last two episodes of Bojack Horseman season 3. If you’ve never watched the show, these episodes were kind of a big deal. (If you have watched the show you know exactly what we’re talking about. Wow. WOW.)

Then we go over the first episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (it’s mostly us going “All the Sam Flying Scenes, ALL OF THEM”), plan our assembly of the Flame Toys Windblade, and ask our listeners for transcription app recommendations.

  • Binary System Podcast #261: WTNV #185 “Fair”

It’s a beautiful day in Night Vale, and it’s time once again to run around in circles and PANIC because the Librarians have escaped their cages. Fortunately, heroic teen militia leader Tamika Flynn is here to save the day by…helping the Librarians get their paperwork sent in so they can form a union. And she does it with a minimum of violence, and a few well-deserved pokes at the idea that anyone deserves a terrible working environment or to be arrested when they’re not doing anything wrong, HET HEM, current political climate.

After the recap we had to discuss Bojack Horseman again, since Kathryn just watched the fan-favorite Season Three episode “A Fish Out Of Water”. We also continue our general sense of bafflement at the the way some people behave lately (ie: people who get mad about mask mandates and then get angry when COVID cases rise, private landowners who do nothing about the risk of radioactive wastewater flooding part of Florida FOR YEARS, and authors who build up a loyal fanbase, and then decide to treat some of them like crap FOR NO REASON.)

  • Binary System Podcast #260: Comic-Con, Diamond, Bojack Horseman, and Lore Olympus

As we slooooowly (dear lord so slowly) move out of the pandemic (KNOCK WOOD) other, less horrific news is taking its place in the weekly SitRep. In this episode the news is about a certain ship that got stuck in a canal and our hearts, about Marvel kicking Diamond Distributors to the curb (including what one comic retailer thinks about it) and how San Diego Comic-Con is planning a convention. This year. On Thanksgiving weekend. Folks are Not Pleased.

After that, since Kathryn’s finished season two of Bojack Horseman, we have to jump right into that wonderful weirdness, before wrapping up with the most recent two episodes of Lore Olympus. (It’s been great to get some backstory on Minthe, but here’s hoping next episode we find out what the heck’s going on with Artemis?)

Raise a glass, or a can (of beer), or a cup (of hot cider), because the COVID-19 pandemic in the USA is officially one year old.

To distract us from this grim milestone we have a new Night Vale episode (featuring Deb, the Sentient Patch of Haze) and TWO Lore Olympus episodes to recap. And they were all…surprisingly sweet! (Well, the second episode of Lore Olympus was sweet anyway. God, Apollo, go AWAY.)

And if a big dose of us fangirlling over Lore Olympus isn’t enough, we also talk about Lackadaisy Cats, which is another one of our favorite webcomics and the test animations for its upcoming short film look amazing.

The hysterical Twitter war Kathryn mentioned was between publishers Melville House and Penguin Random House (well, between the people running their Twitter feeds). Buzzfeed did a write up about it here.

The character from the Lackadaisy Cats webcomic Elizabeth was talking about is Ivy Pepper, and the Welcome To Night Vale weather Elizabeth mentioned is Closer by The Tiny (and yes, this would work perfectly with Ivy as the singer.)
