Welcome to the Santa Barbara Film Festival! We were unable to join in person, but we still got to cover two very different yet captivating films, A Place in the Field and Fresh to Frightening: The Sharon Green Story.
The feature film A Place in the Field follows veteran Gio Scuderi as he receives a package in the mail that sends him on a road trip to fulfill a promise, but ends up fulfilling so much more. We were honored to be joined by director Nicole Mejia, co-writer and star Don DiPetta, producer Heliya Alam, and cinematographer Kadri Koop. We discuss the significance of having a woman direct (and other key roles in the crew) a story about a military vet, how the film's many beautiful locations (much like the film itself) came together in a serendipitous way, the power of horse therapy, and how life imitated art during the making of the film.
In the short film Fresh to Frightening: The Sharon Green Story, we're introduced to Sharon Green, one of the best yacht racing photographers in the game. Director Gareth Kelly and Sharon Green herself joined us to share how they met and decided to make this film, Sharon's fearlessness and success in a world dominated by men, and some of her scariest "oh shit" moments while photographing a yacht race from a helicopter.

In honor of the theatrical release of Marvelous and the Black Hole on April 22, 2022, we're flashing back to Sundance 2021 in partnership with honorary Bitch and Sundance partner-in-crime John Wildman ofFilmsGoneWild.com.
In Marvelous and the Black Hole, we meet a troubled teen who befriends a surly magician who helps her deal with life's problems with the sleight hand of magic. We had a great time in this conversation with director Kate Tsang, and the stars Miya Cech, and the one and only Rhea Perlman. We discuss the Bay vibes throughout the film, channeling your inner badass, how to become a magician, and the significance of stealing toilet paper.
This is a wonderful film that represents the Bay so beautifully! Support independent filmmakers and get your tickets for their theatrical release on April 22nd here

To celebrate the theatrical release of the drama/horror film We're All Going to the World's Fair, we're bringing you back to our interview with them from Sundance 2021 where we were (virtually) joined by our honorary Bitch and Sundance Partner-In-Crime John Wildman of FilmsGoneWild.com.
We're All Going to the World's Fair documents a teenage girl who is alone in her attic bedroom as she becomes obsessed with an online horror game. Director Jane Schoenbrun and the film's star Anna Cobb share the intimate dynamic they created in order to make this film, how they created the serious horror scenes, and the trust it took to accomplish Anna's powerful big screen debut.

Welcome back to Reno, ya'll! And we're on location at a place that's very near and dear to our hearts, the Reno Public House where we recorded our 200th episode back in 2017! We share our thoughts after going to The Go Go's concert (spoiler: they still kick ass), the joys of people watching in Reno, and our collective love for the very troublesome yet extremely entertaining 80s film Revenge of the Nerds. Plus we break down our final thoughts after our second time covering the SXSW Film Festival. Shout out to Jeff Hunt from the Storied SF podcast (aka Erin's husband) for hopping on the mic to join us on this episode. Cheers!

Welcome back Irene Tu! We haven't had you on since early 2018 (a million and a half years ago!) and we're so happy of all of the things you're doing which includes releasing your first comedy album "We're Done Now." Irene has been on a streak - opening for Patton Oswalt, making friends with comedian Taylor Tomlinson, making the most of the pandemic, and lamenting the J&J vaccination (but hey, she hasn't gotten Covid sooooooo....)
Download Irene's album now and please check her out while she hits the circuit in your home towns.

We had a grand ol' time with former San Franciscan, cartoonist and creator of the Hulu show Woke - Keith Knight as well as the lead actor Lamorne Morris and actor/comedian Sasheer Zamata.
In this episode Erin talks with Keith about what he misses after leaving San Francisco after a 17 year stint, how he's similar to the lead character Keef, and how important it is to showcase San Francisco artists on the show. Actors Sasheer and Lamorne give little hints to what we can expect from season 2 of Woke, what it's been like to create and promote a new show during the pandemic, and how Woke has encouraged urgent conversations about race and visibility in front and behind the camera.
If you haven't watched Woke on Hulu yet do it this weekend, then start season 2 immediately!

The Daniels Everything Everywhere All At Once is 2022's best film. Go see it and tell us it is not. This is the most excited we've been about a major action/sci-fi release in a long time (maybe ever) and we were ecstatic to welcome the lead cast to the mic - Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, and directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.
With the Daniels, we get to hear how they met, how they're process was writing this script before and during the Trump presidency, they're very fun fight props, setting the tone on-set and off, how in the hell they got Andre 3000 on the score of this film and a little bitch talking about some of our favorite directors making movies that feel tone deaf.
Changing over to the lead cast, Erin talks with Michelle Yeoh about an off camera comment she made to one of the Daniels, Stephanie Hsu talks all about her bad ass wardrobe's while playing villain Jobu Tupaki, and Ke Huy Quan talks about coming back to the big screen after years of feeling invisible in Hollywood.
Everything Everywhere All At Once is a complete game changer and so worth seeing in a movie theater. Please head out there while it's out. It's a wild ride that needs to be watched more than once. Thanks for listening!

Pixar's Turning Red follows Mei Lee, a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian who starts turning into a giant red panda when she gets too excited- a metaphor for "magical puberty". Mei Lee and her friends are also obsessed with a boy band called 4 Town, and with that, the ladies at Bitch Talk have never felt more represented by an animated film. Director Domee Shi shares her origin story and how she ended up at Pixar, how being the first of many things as a woman of color gave her the confidence to do things her own way, and the joy that came with creating Pixar's first boy band (4 Town, WE LOVE YOU!!).

Well, this wasn't the episode that we planned to put out for today, but due to unforseen circumstances (ie: normalized violence, mental health, and toxic masculinity), we threw out the bat signal and got together to rush this conversation while it was still fresh on our minds. There was reason to be excited about the 94th Academy Awards, and there were plenty of moments that brought us great joy. But unfortunately that all got overshadowed by Will Smith slapping Chris Rock on live tv, in front of millions, with no repercussions. And then he goes on to win the award for best actor to a standing ovation and a five plus minute speech that praised himself as being a vessel of love. This is our reaction.

It's our 5th and final day of the SXSW Film Festival coverage, and we're ending it with 3 narrative films that we really loved!
Roommates is a short film that follows 2 college roommates who were paired together because they're disabled, as things get personal and the vodka starts flowing. We were joined by writer/director Ashley Eakin and the film's stars Kelsey Johnson and Kiera Allen, who explain their bonding session in preparation for the film, the importance of representation for disabled people, and how Paul Feig became a producer on the project.
In the short film Dear Mama..., the death of rapper Tupac Shakur ignites different reactions from a teenage girl and her father, which ultimately leads to them dealing with the tragedy and loss in their own family. Director Winter Dunn and actor Mykayla Lashae Bartholomew discuss the importance of talking about grief, the significance of having a cast and crew of 99% women of color, an old tech alert (this film is set in the 90s), and the cultural significance and impact of Tupac Shakur.
The Prank is a feature length film about an overachiever high school student and his slacker friend who decide to play a prank on their high school teacher that ends up going further than they ever could have expected. We were joined by director Maureen Bahroocha and one of the film's stars, actor Ramona Young, who explain what the energy was like on set by having a cast of established actors (ie: Rita Moreno, Keith David, Kate Flannery, and Meredith Salinger) and fresh young faces (ie: Ramona and Connor Kalopsis). We discuss the many genres that this film covers, how the story touches on current topics such as the spread of fake news and journalistic integrity, and our collective disbelief that Rita Moreno is 90.
