We're joined by Jeff Hunt of Storied: San Francisco to interview Sameer Gupta and Kundan Baidwan, two artists and the creative forces behind the Color Your Mind Festival happening on Saturday, July 27th, from 12-5pm at the Yerba Buena Gardens in downtown SF. This free festival is a celebration of South Asian traditional and modern arts, including music, dance, art, books, crafts, and more. We hope to see you there!

In the meantime, Kundan and Sameer share how they grew up together and bonded as creative kids in school, why they started Rootstock Arts, and how art is a major part of South Asian culture. Then we dive into what you can expect at the festival, and why it's so important for them to create platforms for other artists.

Owl is a film that debuted at CAAMFest this year about a woman who returns home to Oakland to care for her ailing father, and her problems quickly become much bigger than she ever expected. Director/writer/co-producer Julian Pham and co-producer/lead talent/musician Marica Petrey join us to share how the idea for this film stemmed from a picture Julian took of Marica, their pride in highlighting Oakland and finding beauty in the grittiness of the city, the reason behind their eclectic choices in music styles, and some great advice for budding filmmakers.

We're excited to share our first official coverage of the Tribeca Festival! (virtually through Zoom, but it still counts!)

We kick things off with the documentary New Wave, which follows director Elizabeth Ai on a mission to share the untold story of rebellious punks in the '80s Vietnamese new wave community, but in the process, ends up facing her own haunting past. Director Elizabeth Ai and producer Rachel Sine reflect on how the film took a turn on an unexpected emotional roller coaster, the importance of archival footage (and their creative way of collecting it), the importance of discussing mental health in the AAPI community, and getting Simu Liu on board as Executive Producer.

Next, we discuss the short film A Family Guide to Hunting, about a daughter who takes her uptight Korean-American parents and All-American boyfriend on a bonding hunting trip, where things turn from bad to grisly. Director/writer/producer Zao Wang and producers Joyce Liu-Countryman and Louise Barretto join us to share the behind the scenes logistical complications (ie: snow in LA?!?), why Margaret Cho was the only person who could play the role of the mother, and the special brand of love that is unique to immigrant families.

We are beyond excited that this documentary is out in theaters, because it is an event that we all should have grown up hearing about! COPA 71 shares the erased history of the 1971 Women's World Cup (more than 20 years prior to the first FIFA sponsored Women's World Cup), which was held in Mexico City and attended by more than 100,000 fans.

Director Rachel Ramsay joins us via zoom to explain her shock in finding out about this massive event that has been purposefully wiped from history, the extensive search for archival footage that continued until two weeks before they finished the movie, the emotional impact of the story, and getting major players like Alex Morgan, Brandi Chastain, and Venus and Serena Williams on board.

Queendom is a documentary that follows Gena Marvin, a queer artist from a small town in Russia, as she wears costumes and stages performances that blend a new form of art and activism- and the dangers she faces as a result. We were joined by director Agniia Galdanova and producer Igor Myakotin to discuss how they met Gena, how they kept their crew safe while filming her in public, and the complications that were added while filming during the start of the war in Ukraine.

Thelma is the action/comedy film we've all been waiting for, and this interview was just as fun as watching the movie! Thelma is a 93 year-old grandmother who gets duped by a phone scammer and sets out on a quest through the streets of LA to reclaim what was taken from her.

Director Josh Margolin and the film's star, June Squibb, join us to explain how Josh's 103 year-old grandmother was the inspiration for the film, and that June was always his first choice for the lead. Then June shares her favorite stunts to perform, and the story behind her new nickname "stops-on-a-dime Squibb". We cap it off with some touching behind the scenes stories of their time working with Richard Roundtree.

A House Is Not A Disco captures a year in the life of the world's most iconic homo-normative community: Fire Island Pines. Director Brian J. Smith and producer Jeremy Truong share the difficulty of staying focused while you're being offered margaritas during filming, how climate change became an important part of the story, and the concept behind "food for bottoms".

I Don't Understand You is a narrative film that follows an American couple on the verge of adopting a baby as they find themselves stranded in rural Italy without transportation or language skills. And of course, chaos ensues. This interview is with producers Jessamine Burgum and Kara Durrett from Pinky Promise Films. We get into starting a production company during the heart of the pandemic, their decision making process for new films, how being a young company is an advantage in an ever changing industry, and what a difference it makes to work with really cool people.

Allegra is a badass bitch who has been able to marry her love of community building with her love of films as Frameline's newly coined Executive Director. She shares how she ended up in San Francisco, her (sometimes embarrassing) favorite movies growing up, how she was able to create a space for communities that are continually displaced in SF's Bayview district, and why film is a great gateway to other art forms. We then discuss our collective excitement over this year's festival lineup, including an epic (and free!) Juneteenth block party in the Castro District to kickoff the whole event. Welcome to Flashback Fridays! We're bringing back two films that you can see on the big screen at this year's Frameline Film Festival in San Francisco (running June 19-29)! We truly loved both of these documentaries that will introduce you to two amazing women that should already be household names.

The World According to Allee Willis shares the story of one of the most successful singer/songwriter/artists of our time, Allee Willis, from her strict upbringing to her creative successes (despite struggling to fit in with sexual and gender norms), and eventually, her path to love. We are joined by director Alexis Spraic, producer Nicholas Coles, and EP/participant Prudence Fenton, who share the finding of hidden gems in Allee's archival footage, if there is potential for this to become a series (yes, please!), and how they are continuing Allee's legacy through the Willis Wonderland Foundation.

Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story, follows the life of one of music's first Black trans performers, and how she made it to the edge of stardom before disappearing. Directors Michael Mabbott and Lucah Rosenberg-Lee describe how they thankfully were able to find Jackie before her sudden death, the importance of the timing of the film's release, and telling the story of a trans woman's life that was filled with joy.
