    Geoffrey Burch

    Resistance is Useless
    • In this episode, Geoffrey Burch talks about his book “Resistance is Useless” and the very interesting way it came into existence. The book establishes ways that salesmen can influence sales and relies upon psychology to establish value and worth.
    • Geoff also talks about why salesmen started to get a bad reputation— their penchant for hiding essential facts that they should have revealed about the product. On the other hand, there are things that salespeople must not reveal, and one of them is how easy or commonplace their product is.
    • He also talks about the ratchet analogy. When lifting heavy weights such as a truck, one uses a ratchet jack to lift the truck up slowly, but every turn or click moves the weight up and leaves it there, to be followed up. Big ticket sales should follow the same procedure, with every move priming for the next meeting or move.

    • Bizcast: Alistair Croll on his book, “Just Evil Enough”, in conversation with Subhanjan Sarkar

Alistair Croll is a founder, bestselling author, and conference organiser. After a decade as a product manager in deep tech at Eicon, Primary Access, and 3Com, he co-founded Real User Monitoring pioneer Coradiant, raising a $20M series A in 2001 (the largest investment of its kind in Canadian history at the time). Coradiant’s groundbreaking TrueSight traffic performance technology was acquired by BMC in 2011 for $135M.

In 2010, Alistair co-founded the Year One Labs accelerator, an early-stage incubator that turned $350K in investment into $10M in valuations in six months, launching companies like Localmind (acquired by Airbnb to build their local experiences offering.) He also spent three years as a visiting executive at Harvard Business School, where he worked with Srikant Datar (now the dean of the school) to create the MBA course Data Science and Critical Thinking, and has been a guest lecturer at McGill and Stanford.

      Alistair Croll

Throughout this time, Alistair has been a sought-after public speaker and the founder of several leading technology conferences, including UBM’s Enterprise Cloud Summit and Cloud Connect, O’Reilly’s Strata, and Data Universe. He is also the co-founder of Startupfest, Canada’s original startup event; FWD50, which is now the world’s leading conference on digital government; and Scaletech, Georgian’s annual conversation on scale-stage startup growth.

Alistair has co-authored several books, including Managing Bandwidth (a definitive text on QoS and network performance); Complete Web Monitoring (one of the first books to tackle social media monitoring in depth); and the bestselling Lean Analytics (which has been translated into 8 languages, and is widely considered required reading for startup founders). His latest book, Just Evil Enough, looks at subversiveness in business and will be available in early 2025. Alistair lives in Montreal, Canada.

      Just Evil Enough
      • In this episode, Alistair Croll talks about his latest book, “Just Evil Enough”, which is about subversive marketing. In the era of the Attention Economy, the first hurdle any message must cross is of relevance— is it relevant to the target audience? In such an environment, marketing must engage through unique methods to be able to stand out.
      • All strategies eventually burn out in the field of marketing, and the only way forward is to find new ways of staying relevant. Also, in the era of digital, the medium of messaging becomes extremely important in being able to locate the target audience. The author calls this “product-medium fit”, which, according to him, is much more important than the concept of product-market fit.
      • Buyers are constantly evaluating the value of the product for themselves, but also factoring in into the calculation the cost of being wrong in their assessment of the product. A business can compete either through differentiation of the offer or through reducing costs, both of which are essentially value chain disruptions.

      • Bizcast: Justin Michael & Charles Needham on their book, “Cold Call Algo”, in conversation with Subhanjan Sarkar
        Justin Michael

Justin Michael is a world-record-breaking, outbound sales expert who has arguably developed the most comprehensive client acquisition methodology – the Justin Michael Method (JMM™)- on which he has written multiple books as part of the JMM series.  With over 20 years of experience in sales, including at Salesforce and LinkedIn, Justin is the authority on AI-based outbound prospecting. Charles Needham

Co-Author Charles Needham engineers sales systems that uncover alpha in overlooked data, eliminate inefficiencies, and scale with precision. He began his career in finance, with exposure to structured products and private equity, before transitioning into revenue leadership at high-growth startups. He integrates psychology, game theory, and first-principles thinking into scalable frameworks that consistently outperform legacy sales models. Charles is the Founder of the Needham Advisory Group and Founding Account Executive at TitanX.

        Cold Call Algo
        • In this episode, Justin Michael & Charles Needham talk about their book “Cold Call Algo”, where they have delved into phone calling as a primary means of outreach because they believe that conversations, rather than emails, deliver feedback and data that can be used to refine outreach as well as build meaningful conversations.
        • Technology and AI can be used to determine the most likely prospects, because many people are likely not to pick up calls from unknown numbers, leading to wasted effort in targeting the TAM. Also, AI can help to refine conversations with CXO-level prospects, so that even SDRs fresh into the game can sound sufficiently knowledgeable.
        • The authors suggest that a respectful conversation, even if it does not lead to a sale today, with the right kind of curiosity and questions, can lead to a better understanding of the buyer’s needs and thus lead to higher conversions in the future.

          • He discusses how the buyer behaves and how the seller can meet the requirements of a B2B buyer in today’s world, where buying has become much more professional and buyers leverage their negotiating power to gain advantages.
          • He offers matrices that take into account win-win for buyer and seller, situations where both lose, and circumstances where only one of the negotiators wins. He proposes methods where a balance can be reached to benefit both parties.

            Larry Kulchawik
The Invisible Industry – The Evolution of Trade Shows
            • Larry Kulchawik talks about the process of writing his book on the trade shows and events industry, “The Invisible Industry”, and what led him to write it. Bob McGlincy also co-authored the book, and together they have written about the history and evolution of the trade show industry, starting with the world fairs in Europe, which were not even industry-specific at the time.
            • Since then, trade shows have come a long way in terms of specialisation, processes, technologies and scale, growing to be a one trillion-dollar industry that is unlikely to be known outside stakeholder circles.
            • Larry believes that the power of face-to-face interaction, emotion, and the possibility of discovery— a Eureka moment by his definition— are the crucial reasons why the trade show industry receives the largest portion of the marketing budget allocation and continues to be relevant.

The book is based on his practical experience in helping and mentoring grassroots-level business entrepreneurs for the last twenty-five years. The measures of success are primarily of two kinds, one is profitability, and the other is survivability. These and other gems of knowledge that apply to all businesses in general but particularly to small and medium enterprises at the grassroots are revealed in this enlightening interview.

                Richard Harris
                The Seller’s Journey
                • In this episode, Richard Harris talks about his book, “The Seller’s Journey: Your Guidebook to Closing More Deals with N.E.A.T. Selling”. He begins by discussing his writing process, his motivations and how the project started. He started writing a very different book, which ultimately turned out to be the present volume. He intended to write something that would help salespeople elevate their game and improve the selling process and outcome, rather than a New York Times bestseller. He also admits very candidly that the book was meant to be a validation and a calling card for someone who had been in the sales consulting space for many years.
                • The book has two key aspects. One is the psychological part, which is about understanding the motivations behind buying, being human, being graceful, providing space and so on. The other key aspect is the tactical part, which is about “here is how you handle these conversations”. Initially, the first drafts were more on the tactical front, but the structure evolved to its current form over time.
                • Richard enumerates crucial ideas, such as economic impact and access to authority, that define his thinking on the sales process. Amongst several paradigms offered by Richard, one concept is that salespersons have to earn the right to ask the right questions for discovery. And he offers a process through which salespeople can reach that rapport with the potential customer, whereby he can ask the right questions. This involves exchanging ideas, rather than trying to push a sale. If the customer decides that they like the idea, further conversations can happen. In other words, it is always about exchanging ideas rather than selling a product or service.

He is the author of “Mastering Disruption: A Practical Guide to Understanding New-Age Business Models” (Penguin Random House India). The book reflects his deep understanding of the transformative business models shaping the future of industries worldwide.

                  K Ganesh
                  Mastering Disruption
                  • In this episode, K. Ganesh talks about his book “Mastering Disruption”, a treatise on new-age business models. He compares the digital disruption era with traditional business models where there was a linear flow of value from producer to consumer, with economies of scale and efficiency playing a key role in profitability.
                  • In the digital era, however, there has been a platformization of businesses, with an in-between platform simply connecting the producer to the consumer and making money in the process. This has augured huge changes, and more are on the way with Agentic AI making a real-world impact.
                  • We are already seeing not only pay-per-use models but also outcome-based pricing. Businesses today must capitalise on current technologies and leverage new modes of value creation, such as engaging gig-workers and, where applicable, AI and Generative AI.

                    Mark Schaefer
                    Audacious
                    • Mark Schaefer points out that today, there is a surfeit of content, and it is very difficult to stand out. Every organisation, as well as individual, has the desire to be heard. But it has become extremely difficult to do so because content is not a vovelty anymore. AI has added to the speed and volume of generation. In such a situation, marketers have to be bold with their content, ideas and communication. They cannot afford to build on previous ideas- rather, they must break away and create entirely new ideas.
                    • Marketing is a narrative that involves three key factors- the story itself, where you tell it and who tells it. If you disrupt one of those three elements, you have a chance to stand out because you are doing something that nobody has done before.
                    • Being competent is not enough in the age of AI. Because AI is competent, and you are, therefore, replaceable. Mark’s book is about digging deep to uncover the truly and uniquely human aspects of marketing. Ultimately, humans trust humans, and nothing really beats human marketing, such as word-of-mouth publicity.

                    • Bizcast: Bits about books – Title: Gregory L Vetter on his book, “Undressed”, in conversation with Subhanjan Sarkar

Gregory L Vetter is a well-established innovator and disruptor in the clean food movement. The oldest of the Vetter brothers, he had the brilliant idea of launching Tessemae’s after being inspired by his mother’s wildly popular homemade dressing recipe. What Gregory knew, and the American consumer base was soon to discover, was that the idea would soon resonate widely and give rise to an entirely new clean food category.

Gregory and his broader family, primarily brothers, Matt and Brian, cultivated the business and in a mere 5 years translated their vision into becoming the #1 organic salad dressing brand in the refrigerated space. The emergence of Tessemae paved the way for clean manufacturing on a mass scale by inventing the only gum-free dressing bottling process. Ultimately, that manufacturing process led to the creation of the “fresh condiment” category and, similarly, the first Whole30-approved bottled dressings and condiments in the nation.

With the wind clearly at their back, Gregory and his brothers launched Alta Fresh Food Company. Alta Fresh Food has since pioneered a better way to get great-tasting salads to the masses through their innovative “master kitting” process and breakthrough R & R&D team. After their triumph as “Sam’s Club Supplier of the Year”, resulting from their “Master Kitting” process, Alta was propelled to the forefront of the fresh food solutions industry.

More recently, Gregory elected to take his lessons learned from his sustained success in the food industry and launched “Home Grown Brand Accelerator”. Home Grown was developed with a singular purpose in mind, “to empower the next generation of brands by making the “playbook” available to whoever had the desire to build the next great American brand.” Winner of Inc. Magazines Entrepreneur of the Year award, Inc. Magazines 35 under 35, EY Entrepreneur of the year finalist, TED talk speaker, Nielsen Design Impact Award for Packaging, And Sam’s Club Supplier of the Year, Gregory spends his time with his wife and 4 children on their farm in West River.

Undressed:  The Unfiltered Story of My Failed American Dream and How It Lead to Success
                      • In this episode, Gregory L. Vetter talks about his book “Undressed, The Unfiltered Story of My Failed American Dream and How It Led to Success.” Greg Vetter Started his Salad Dressing and condiments business from very small beginnings, rising to become a multi-million-dollar successful behemoth.
                      • He started when he was 25 years old, and of course, would not have believed that one could fail at business at such a young age. However, a series of Black Swan events such as COVID and the Russia-Ukraine war led to disruptions in sales as well as supply chain, forcing him to absorb unforeseen shocks. Ultimately it led to investor mayhem and the demise of the business.
                      • This book details what happened and aims to be advice that entrepreneurs can use when detailing their business. While specific scenarios may vary, human nature and how the business world thinks remain pretty much consistent. In the author’s own words, this is the book he would have advised himself to read at 25, had he been given that opportunity.
