  • Connecting on Your Recruitment Visit, Lacrosse, & Getting Back into Your Sport with Special Guest: Jake Berg
Our guest this week is Jake Berg, a former Missouri Valley College lacrosse player, journalist, and host of the podcast Bleav in Lacrosse. Part of our Bleav team, and a really honest guest. Jake plays lacrosse in the Interstate Box Lacrosse Association, so we get to hear about his thought process after his collegiate career ended and why he felt like he wasn’t done competing in lacrosse. He actually took a full year off before deciding that he wanted to train and compete in the Box league – which is indoor lacrosse. It’s a fun conversation about connecting with the right team during a recruitment visit, the benefits of going to a smaller school where the majority of the student body is an athlete, what life looks like for Jake now, and hopefully you’ll learn a little bit about lacrosse!

  • Nutrition, Brain Health, and Longevity with Special Guest: Casey Thomas
A subject that plays a major role in every athlete, post-collegiate athlete, and active person's life (and every human's life) is NUTRITION. We knew that in order to discuss nutrition, we needed the perfect guest, and we found him.
Our guest, Casey Thomas, spent five years working in clinical research before deciding to return to school to become a registered dietitian. He spearheaded the development of a sports nutrition program on campus and completed a thesis project examining cognitive supplements in elite e-sports athletes. He is a published scientific author who regularly engages as an expert peer reviewer, and has been featured in media outlets for interviews about his nutrition strategies. Casey currently works as the performance dietitian for UCLA Athletics and instructs an Exercise and Sports Nutrition course through UCLA Extension.
His unique research background has allowed him to implement protocols that have facilitated significant improvements in body composition, health, and performance among the athletes – assisting several teams to championship victories. He has similarly enjoyed consulting for other sports programs, universities, and businesses looking to gain a performance edge. While Casey has experience working directly with elite level athletes and multiple Olympians, he is also passionate about bringing high level performance nutrition to people simply looking to improve.

  • Strava: An Athlete's Dilemma When Your Sport Ends
Are you thinking of using Strava? Or do you currently track and share your workouts using Strava? Maybe you have no idea what Strava is. If you fit into any of these three categories, this is the podcast episode for you!
Don recently started using the social media app for athletes called Strava, which allows you to map your running and cycling routes, track your pace & distance, and share those workouts with others. He is testing out the paid version now, but the app is free. As a former D1 swimmer, Don enjoys the community aspect of Strava and uses the app to both track his own progress and to find new routes to run/cycle.
Brooke has some reservations using Strava, and is testing out the app with Don. In this episode she explains why tracking and recording her runs and cycling routes brings back unhealthy aspects of her collegiate running career. Brooke also likes the community aspect of the app and sees how it can be a motivating and encouraging atmosphere (but she might need some time before committing to using the app!).
