Bloomberg News Metals & Mining Reporter Joe Deaux discusses President Donald Trump initially saying he was increasing the steel and aluminum tariff on Canadian goods to 50% to retaliate against Ontario’s move to place a levy on electricity sent to the US. Ontario later announced it would suspend that 25% surcharge on electricity sent to the US.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced the change in a joint statement on social media, in which the pair said they would meet Thursday in Washington. Trump then commented to reporters at the White House that he would take another look at planned tariffs on Canada.

Bloomberg's Nathan Hager breaks down the recent market volatility with Morgan Stanley's Mike Wilson and Bloomberg Opinion contributor Mohamed El-Erian.
Global stocks steadied from a selloff and US stock futures signaled a Wall Street bounce, as Bloomberg News reported President Donald Trump will meet with top business executives later in the day. Contracts for the Nasdaq 100 rose 0.5% after the index’s deepest slump since 2022, while those on the S&P 500 climbed 0.4%. Tesla Inc. shares rose in premarket trading after Monday’s 15% slide while other tech names including Nvidia Corp. also edged higher. In Europe, the Stoxx 600 index was steady while earlier, Asian shares bounced off an intraday five-week low. There was relief for other risk assets too, as Bitcoin stabilized after a five-day selloff and oil prices notched a small bounce from Monday’s drop. However, concerns over the once unstoppable resilience of the US economy continue to support Treasury markets, with 10-year yields edging lower again on Tuesday. The dollar index slid 0.3%.

Bloomberg Intelligence Chief Equity Strategist Gina Martin Adams discusses that while the cues from S&P 500 earnings generally support the outlook for stocks this year, the market's tolerance for risk is being dismantled by the combination of high profit expectations (they're the most elevated since 2018), tough comparisons and a year of weakening analyst revisions.
That said, growth is still improving for cyclical sectors and sentiment-driving margin expectations are back on the rise despite problematic cues from inflation. The period of easy earnings beats is likely ending for much of the benchmark, suggesting the fundamental backdrop may become choppier in 2025.
Gwenaelle Huet, Executive Vice President of Europe Operations at Schneider Electric, shares her thoughts on the EU’s economic future around energy policy. Bloomberg International Economics and Policy Correspondent Michael McKee, Bloomberg News Economics Editor Molly Smith and Jane Oates, Senior Policy Advisor at WorkingNation discuss US job growth steading last month while the unemployment rate rose — a mixed snapshot of a job market hanging in the balance of quickly changing government policy.
Nonfarm payrolls increased 151,000 in February after a downward revision to the prior month, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics report out Friday. The unemployment rate rose to 4.1%. Friday’s report is the latest evidence that the labor market is softening, with more people permanently out of work, fewer workers on federal government payrolls and a jump in those working part-time for economic reasons. The number of Americans holding multiple jobs climbed to a record of nearly 8.9 million.
That sets a weak backdrop just as President Donald Trump’s policies raise concerns about the broader economy. Inflation has proven sticky in recent months and consumers are starting to pull back on spending, which, if sustained, may lead businesses to rethink their hiring plans.

Bloomberg Intelligence Senior Policy Analyst Nathan Dean discusses President Donald Trump saying he will exempt Mexico from his new 25% tariffs on any goods and services that fall under the North American trade agreement known as USMCA, offering a reprieve for a major US trading partner.
“This Agreement is until April 2nd,” Trump said in a social media post Thursday after speaking with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. “I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for, President Sheinbaum.” The decision came shortly after Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Trump was weighing an exemption for both Mexican and Canadian goods under the agreement, saying he expected Trump to officially decide the scope of the delay on Thursday.
