  • Jay McBain: How to Turbocharge Your Channel Career

After years of non-stop growth and massive hiring by the big tech companies, we’re suddenly seeing large-scale layoffs. Amazon, Meta, and Salesforce together have announced 29,000 people being let go in just the past 3 months. What impact will this have on your channel career? What impact with it have on your partners? Jay McBain, Chief Channel Analyst at Canalys, shares how to turbocharge your channel career and thrive in this new brave world of layoffs and massive channel transformation.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Here are 10 things I learned from Jay about how to navigate your channel career in 2023:

    1. Mass tech layoffs, not seen in years, are back. Salesforce just announced they’re letting 10% of their workforce go.
    2. The channel stands to benefit. Partners have had a hard time competing for talent with the tech giants who offered massive salaries and lavish benefits.
    3. Tech companies are realigning talent with strategies and priorities that have shifted over the past year due to economic conditions including massive inflation, high interest rates, and supply chain shortages.
    4. Channel programs are going through transformational changes, creating new opportunities for channel pros.
    5. Start looking around and learn what others are doing, find out who’s playing leading roles in this transformation, read what the leading consulting firms are writing about the ecosystem. You need to think beyond the transaction and think more broadly about partnerships.
    6. If you’re early in your career, build your peer network. Build strong relationships with up and comers your age, rather than trying to bond with today’s executives. You’re going to move up with your contemporaries. Ten, twenty years from now they’ll be in leadership roles.
    7. Connect and engage with the partner and channel communities. Build a voice and brand for yourself.
    8. Partner leaders are joining the C-Suite, but it’s not who you might think. Of the 20 Chief Partner Officers appointed in 2022, not one has ever been a channel chief. Most are coming from top strategic consulting firms.
    9. These CPOs have a different set of KPIs. They’re measured on things like co-innovation and creating customer value rather than on transactions.
    10. Channel Chiefs need to move past empire building to a distributed approach. Embed partner-led people in all teams, sales, marketing, customer success, product management, HR, every line of business. Makes sure you don’t own your own silo.

          • Rich Blakeman: The Power of the Hybrid Sales Channel

Go-to-market strategies keep evolving, but one thing that hasn’t gone away is the ever present challenge of channel conflict. This is especially true in regions or market segments where you co-sell with your partners. How do you get your own reps to give up control in exchange for the powerful returns partners can bring? Rich Blakeman, author of The Hybrid Sales Channel, shares how to drive revenue and profits through a sales methodology that reduces conflict and leverages the unique strengths of direct and channel sales.

            KEY TAKEAWAYS

Here are 5 things I learned from Rich about effective co-selling with partners:

            1. The hybrid sales channel is like a hybrid vehicle that has a battery, a gas engine, brakes. All are designed for a very specific purpose that don’t overlap each other at all.  Apply the same principle to in sales to take advantage of the unique strengths of the vendor and the partner.
            2. Selling is all about how the customer buys and not how you want to sell. Align your resources and capabilities, and those of your partners, with what your customer needs.
            3. The partner account manager focuses on the partner, not in the weeds with transactions. Meanwhile, the direct rep can act like a sales manager with a team of partner reps.
            4. The seagulls in Finding Nemo chirping “mine, mine, mine” are a great analogy to direct reps who are so reluctant to let go and leverage partners. Acting that way they lose more often than they win.
            5. Change doesn’t happen without executive commitment and alignment to the hybrid channel strategy. But it falls to the first line manager to make that change happen.

              • Conill and Manks: How to Win on the AWS Marketplace

There’s no doubt that customers are increasingly making their technology purchases on B2B marketplaces. I wrote about the impact of this shift recently in my blog on Channel Predictions: 2023 and Beyond. To learn why marketplaces are gaining so much steam and how ISVs and partners can take advantage of this shift, I turned to Felipe Conill, WW Leader, AWS Emerging Security and David Manks, VP of Alliances at BeyondTrust.  Felipe and David share how to get listed and then win on the AWS Marketplace.

                KEY TAKEAWAYS

Here are 10 things I learned from Felipe and David about the AWS Marketplace:

                1. The AWS Marketplace is 10 years old and now selling billions of technology with tens of thousands of ISVs already listing on the marketplace
                2. Once customers learn they could buy their infrastructure services on the marketplace, they wanted to buy software solutions the same way, on the same invoice and the same budget
                3. A Forester study on the partner opportunity for AWS Marketplace found that sellers realized 80% larger deal sizes, 27% higher win rates, and 40% faster sales cycles when transacting on AWS Marketplace
                4. The Forrester study also found that sellers experienced as much as 20% of their pipeline generated through AWS as their relationship with AWS and AWS Marketplace matured
                5. Getting on the AWS Marketplace itself is as simple as registering as a seller and deciding what sort of listing and pricing you want to have, working with the AWS Marketplace team
                6. Aligning your sales team, systems, and processes takes a bit more work. Like any new partner initiative, commitment from your ELT and your cross functional organization is a key to success
                7. Enablement is also key. Train and educate your sellers on how to transact on the marketplace and how to talk with customers about using their EDP (Enterprise Discount Program).
                8. Communicate your marketplace plans to your partners and educate them on how they can participate via private offers
                9. Private offers allows an ISVs and partners to negotiate terms and pricing with the customer, and then issue a private offer through the marketplace to fulfill the software
                10. Educate the AWS sellers on the value proposition of AWS plus your solution to drive greater co-selling

                  • Gary Morris: How to Create a Successful Channel Manager

One challenge channel managers still face is finding time to sit down with partners and develop proper business plans. But it’s not just an issue of time. Channel managers struggle with the skills needed to talk about business goals, document goals and action plans with their partners, and effectively meet to review progress.

To address this challenge, I dusted off the first episode of the Channel Journeys podcast. My guest is Gary Morris, founder and CEO of Successful Channels, who developed an innovative solution to a classic problem – how to increase the performance of channel managers.

                    KEY TAKEAWAYS
                    • Gary built Successful Channels to provide the under-served Channel Account Manager with automated Partner Planning & Performance tools.
                    • The channel has been slow to adopt new technology due to cultural resistance, but that’s starting to change.
                    • Joint business planning and Quarterly Business Reviews drives drives more predictable performance and accountability of both the vendor and the partner.
                    • Score-carding breaks down silos and builds collaboration between channel managers and the sales team.
                    • Providing an easy and consistent way for Channel Managers to conduct partner business planning, score-carding and QBRs will dramatically improve partner performance.
