  • Louise McEvoy: How to Tap into Transformational Partnerships

How many channel chiefs do you know who have successfully climbed to the top of Mt. Everest? I’ve only met one, Louise McEvoy, who applys lessons learned from mountain climbing to her role as a channel chief. Louis, VP of US Channels at Trend Micro, loves adventure and thrives on change, both on and off the mountain. She is pursuing new markets and new ways to address changes in buyer behaviors applying a concept called the Blue Ocean Strategy.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

Here are some of the ways I learned from Louis to summit modern partnerships and drive new business:

    1. Consider applying concepts from the book called Blue Ocean Strategy where red oceans are all the market spaces in existence today and blue oceans denote market spaces not in existence today that are untainted by competition.
    2. Leverage private offers via partners on marketplaces, known as Consulting Partner Private Offers (CPPO) on the AWS Marketplace.
    3. Organize your channel team so that you have some teams focused on the traditional “red ocean” partners and others focused on the “blue ocean” transformation partners. Then look for ways to add “blue oceans” to your traditional partners.
    4. Don’t put your transformational partners into traditional constraining partner agreements. Provide the freedom for the partnership to develop in ways you may not even imagine.
    5. Seek simplicity, flexibility, and patience in your company’s attitude towards partnerships. And create and environment that promotes the ability to accept some risk and failure.

        • Joe Golemba: KPIs for the Modern Partner Ecosystem

You’re probably tracking Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for your transactional partners. These are the traditional metrics like partner sales, partner originated pipeline, and win rates.  But what are the right metrics to track the performance of the modern partner ecosytem such as system integrators, cloud hyperscalers, and strategic consulting firms? Joe Golemba, VP, Global Ecosystem & Partners at Pricefx, discusses the KPIs you should be measuring.

          KEY TAKEAWAYS

Here are some of the KPIs you should consider measuring to have a more data-driven partner strategy:

          1. Number of partners involved in an opportunity and the value add of each
          2. % of implementations completed by partners
          3. End customer NPS (Net Promoter Score) of your partners and your partners’ implementation

              • Lana King: Maintaining Partner Trust through Massive Change

A year ago, I interviewed Lana King, VP of Partner Programs, Training and Enablement, on how Mitel is helping partners and their customers adopt the cloud business model through their unique partner managed program. A few months after that interview, Mitel struck a strategic partnership where RingCentral became their exclusive UCaaS partner. In this episode, Lana shares how Mitel is maintaining trust with partners through this massive change in their product strategy.

                KEY TAKEAWAYS

Here are 5 things I learned from Lana about maintaining trust with partners:

                1. A fundamental requirement for trust is full transparency, with your partners, your customers, and your employees.
                2. When going through change in your product strategy or go to market model, communicate those changes clearly, early, and often. You can’t over communicate.
                3. Communication has to be two way. Give your partners, customers and employees an opportunity to communicate and to be heard.
                4. Leverage your partner advisory council and partner events to share your new strategy, the role and value add of your partners, and listen to partner feedback.
                5. Consider changes you need to make to your partner program in light of a strategic shift to reward and incent the behavior and motions you need from your partners.

                    • Lynn Smurthwaite-Murphy: Channel Success in a Remote Digital World

Buyer and worker behavior changed dramatically during the pandemic. Lynn Smurthwaite-Murphy, CEO of Plugable Technologies, discusses the impacts of the remote worker, digital buyer world on the channel and how to achieve success. The answer is surprisingly simple.

                      KEY TAKEAWAYS

Here are 5 things I learned from Lynn about the shift to a remote digital world:

                      1. Tech buyers are getting more and more comfortable make large purchases digitally, with deal sizes surpassing $500K.
                      2. B2B is still lagging B2C in digital transformation, but digital is eating away at the long tail of the channel where transactional partners are slow to transform their business model. Digital native marketplaces are going after the longtail products, both hardware and software with low average selling prices.
                      3. Look at adopting a hybrid remote approach where a small percentage of employees go in every day, another small percentage go in periodically as they need, and the largest percentage are fully remote
                      4. The most important thing you can do to succeed is map your entire buyer’s journey, and do it frequently to ensure you have the right partners and do not have any breaking points in the journey.
                      5. You can do continuous research on the buyer journey simply by asking, every time you get ahold of the customer, “would you mind doing a 15 minute interview with us? We’d love to know how you found us.”

                          • Partner Panel: How to Build a Modern Partner Ecosystem

Last week I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in our first live Partner Advisory Board (PAB) as the SVP Channels & Alliances at BeyondTrust. The setting was beautiful Monaco overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the format was highly interactive. While there, I took the opportunity to record a live podcast to hear what our  Partner Advisory Board members thought of the PAB and the importance of a modern partner ecosystem.

Joining me in this podcast are Dana Reed, Distinguished Engineer, Office of the CTO at SailPoint; Eric Kohl, Vice President Advanced Solutions, Security & Networking at Ingram Micro; Per Samuelsen, Business Unit Lead at ICY Security; and Brent Thurrell, Chief Revenue Officer at BeyondTrust.

                            KEY TAKEAWAYS

Here are 5 of the many things I learned during our PAB and this panel interview:

                            1. Building a modern partner ecosystem requires changes within your own organization and your partners’. Structuring your PAB meetings using Appreciative Inquiry, a process for facilitating positive change, will help drive a highly interactive meeting and a deeper connection with and between your partners.
                            2. Bringing a diverse set of partners to your PAB creates a mini partner ecosystem where partners learn about each other’s business models and geographic differences, and leads to valuable partner-to-partner connections.
                            3. The move to SaaS and the changes in buyer behaviour are driving the necessity of a diverse partner ecosystem to land the customer, deliver business outcomes, and drive customer success.
                            4. Partners are recognizing that they cannot do everything themselves and are seeing the need to find other high quality partners who can add additional layers of value to meet the needs of the customer throughout the modern buyer journey.
                            5. There is no subsititue for live partner events to build relationships. The time we spent with our PAB members, both in the PAB meeting and outside on our excursions, was an important step in modernizing our partner program and building an orchestrated partner ecosystem.
