As an Assistant Professor in the Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology Department at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Mariana’s work examines how inflammation mediates changes in host physiology, and how these changes can cause disruption of the microbial ecosystem in our large intestine, leading to disease.

In this episode, Mariana speaks to us about the content from a recent WOCN Society webinar, The Gut Microbiota & Health: A Focus on Linking Intestinal Dysbiosis & Human Disease, which introduced the exciting field of the microbiome and uncovered the role of the gut microbiota in promoting human health, how gut dysbiosis occurs, and the clinical implications of gut dysbiosis with focus in hospital acquired infections, inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer.
